Fabrication of high performance Ti/SnO2-Nb2O5 electrodes for electrochemical textile wastewater treatment.

Textile wastewater contains many organic compounds and colors that affect aquatic life and human health when discharged into the environment. High coloration due to excess dyes entering the wastewater causes coloration to the receiving water stream, affects the photosynthesis process of aquatic species, and adversely affects the landscape. SnO2-based electrodes have been extensively used in electrochemical water treatment, but their low durability decreases the pollutant treatment ability. Therefore, it is necessary to add another stable oxide to improve the performance and stability of SnO2 e

Nanochannel Templated Iridium Oxide Nanostructures for Wide-Range pH Sensing from Solutions to Human Skin Surface.

Herein we report the fabrication of highly sensitive solid-state pH sensors based on iridium oxide nanowires (IONWs) for a wide-range of pH measurements. IONWs were confined electrodeposits on the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode using a highly ordered silica nanochannel membrane as the template. Subsequently removing the template produced amorphous IONWs consisting of hydrated iridium oxyhydroxides. The IONW/ITO sensor can rapidly respond to the pH of the aqueous solutions in a wide range (from 0 to 13), avoiding the acid and alkaline errors encountered by conventional pH electrodes and exhib

Investigation of Xenobiotics Metabolism In Salix alba Leaves via Mass Spectrometry Imaging.

The method presented uses mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) to establish the metabolic profile of S. alba leaves when exposed to xenobiotics. Using a non-targeted approach, plant metabolites and xenobiotics of interest are identified and localized in plant tissues to uncover specific distribution patterns. Then, in silico prediction of potential metabolites (i.e., catabolites and conjugates) from the identified xenobiotics is performed. When a xenobiotic metabolite is located in the tissue, the type of enzyme involved in its alteration by the plant is recorded. These results were used to describ

Optical imaging of single-protein size, charge, mobility, and binding.

Detection and identification of proteins are typically achieved by analyzing protein size, charge, mobility and binding to antibodies, which are critical for biomedical research and disease diagnosis and treatment. Despite the importance, measuring these quantities with one technology and at the single-molecule level has not been possible. Here we tether a protein to a surface with a flexible polymer, drive it into oscillation with an electric field, and image the oscillation with a near field optical imaging method, from which we determine the size, charge, and mobility of the protein. We als

Subtyping of influenza A H1N1 virus using a label-free electrochemical biosensor based on the DNA aptamer targeting the stem region of HA protein.

Rapid subtyping of influenza viruses in clinical laboratories has been increasingly important because three subtypes (seasonal H1N1, H3N2, and 2009 H1N1) of influenza A virus currently disseminated in humans have variable susceptibilities to antiviral drug. Herein, we present DNA aptamers for selective detection of influenza A H1N1 (seasonal and 2009 pandemic H1N1) viruses by targeting recombinant influenza A mini-hemagglutinin (mini-HA) protein (the stable stem region of HA) and whole H1N1 viruses. The dissociation constants (KD) of aptamer candidates V46 and V57 were 19.2 nM and 29.6 nM, res

Photoelectrochemical biosensor for CEA detection based on SnS2-GR with multiple quenching effects of Au@CuS-GR.

A novel signal on-off type photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensing system was designed for sensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) based on tin disulfide nanosheets loaded on reduced graphene cxide (SnS2-GR) as the photoactive material and gold nanoparticles coated on reduced graphene oxide-functionalized copper sulfide (Au@CuS-GR) for signal amplification. It's the first time for SnS2-GR was exploited as a sensing matrix. Here, the photocurrent signals of SnS2 were amplified attributed to the sensitization effect of graphene. As signal amplifier, Au@CuS-GR could quench the photocu

In-situ growth of NiWO4 saw-blade-like nanostructures and their application in photo-electrochemical (PEC) immunosensor system designed for the detection of neuron-specific enolase.

This study describes the construction of highly-sensitive photo-electrochemical (PEC) immunosensor for the detection of neuron-specific enolase (NSE). The biosensing platform is comprised of photo-active NiWO4 nanostructures, in-situ-grown over a conductive substrate (indium tin oxide) using a low-temperature template-based co-precipitation approach. The discussed approach enables the formation of discrete, yet morphologically-analogous, nanostructures with complete coverage (pinhole-free) of the electrode surface. The in-situ-grown nanostructure possess dense population with sharp saw-blade l

Photoelectrochemical determination of trypsin by using an indium tin oxide electrode modified with a composite prepared from MoS2 nanosheets and TiO2 nanorods.

A photoelectrochemical (PEC) method has been developed for sensitive detection of trypsin. It is based on the use of a composite consisting of MoS2 nanosheets and TiO2 nanorods (MoS2-TiO2). The material has a high specific surface area, superior electrical conductivity, excellent biocompatibility and good band gap matching. The composite was synthesized by a one-pot method using TiO2 as a template. This results in a uniform distribution of the MoS2 nanosheets (<5 layers) in the composite. If the composite, placed on an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode, is coupled to apoferritin, the photocurre

Electrocatalytic synthesis of black tin oxide nanomaterial as photothermal agent for cancer therapy.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is among the popular approach for treating solid tumours. The rapid killing of cancer cells under the influence of infrared radiation by a rapid increase in the temperature of the remote area now demands external agents with high photothermal transduction efficiency (PTE). Despite their improved PTE, black nanomaterials such as black phosphorus and titanium oxide are unable to meet the challenges in the physiological conditions. To address this major concern, we have developed black tin oxide (bSnO) with enhanced capabilities to respond in the physiological milieu. T

Femtomolar Detection by Nanocoated Fiber Label-Free Biosensors.

The advent of optical fiber-based biosensors combined with that of nanotechnologies has provided an opportunity for developing in situ, portable, lightweight, versatile, and high-performance optical sensing platforms. We report on the generation of lossy mode resonances by the deposition of nanometer-thick metal oxide films on optical fibers, which makes it possible to measure precisely and accurately the changes in optical properties of the fiber-surrounding medium with very high sensitivity compared to other technology platforms, such as long period gratings or surface plasmon resonances, th

Preparation of a Mesoporous Structure of SnO2 for Increasing the Oral Bioavailability and Dissolution Rate of Nitrendipine.

In this study, mesoporous SnO2 (MSn) with a three-dimensional mesoporous structure was prepared using MCM-48 as the template in order to increase the oral bioavailability and dissolution rate of insoluble drugs. The model drug, nitrendipine (NDP), was loaded into the MSn by the adsorption method. The structural features of MSn were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and N2 adsorption (desorption) analysis. NDP was existed in the pore channels of MSn in an amorphous state, which was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), diffe

Unexpected sequel to silver fluoride followed by stannous fluoride treatment of root stumps supporting an overlay denture in an aged-care patient.

An institutionalized high care dementia patient, who is unable to maintain his own oral health, presented with five lower anterior carious root stumps supporting a lower overlay denture. Due to limited cooperation, his root stumps were treated with only silver fluoride followed by stannous fluoride applied topically on a 4-monthly cycle. Almost one and a half years after his initial application, there were unexpected calculus formations on the root stumps accompanied by marked gingival inflammation and gingival hyperplasia. At this point prognosis was considered very poor. Because the patient'

Visible-light driven Photoelectrochemical Immunosensor Based on SnS2@mpg-C3N4 for Detection of Prostate Specific Antigen.

Herein, a novel label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor based on SnS2@mpg-C3N4 nanocomposite is fabricated for the detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in human serum. Firstly, mesoporous graphite-like carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) with carboxyl groups is synthesized successfully which possesses high specific surface area and large pore volume. Then, SnS2 as a typical n-type semiconductor with weak photoelectric conversion capability is successfully loaded on carboxylated mpg-C3N4 to form a well-matched overlapping band-structure. Synthesis and characterization of DNA fenced, self-assembled SnO2 nano-assemblies for supercapacitor applications.

Self-assembled, aggregated, chain-like SnO2 nano-assemblies were synthesized at room temperature by a simple wet chemical route within an hour in the presence of DNA as a scaffold. The average size of the SnO2 particles and the chain diameter were controlled by tuning the DNA to Sn(ii) molar ratio and altering the other reaction parameters. A formation and growth mechanism of the SnO2 NPs on DNA is discussed. The SnO2 chain-like assemblies were utilized as potential anode materials in an electrochemical supercapacitor. From the supercapacitor study, it was found that the SnO2 nanomaterials sho

Facile Synthesis of Mesocrystalline SnO2 Nanorods on Reduced Graphene Oxide Sheets: An Appealing Multifunctional Affinity Probe for Sequential Enrichment of Endogenous Peptides and Phosphopeptides.

A novel multifunctional composite comprising mesocrystalline SnO2 nanorods (NRs) vertically aligned on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets was synthesized and developed for sequential capture of endogenous peptides and phosphopeptides. With the hydrophobicity of rGO and high affinity of SnO2 nanorods, sequential enrichment of endogenous peptides and phosphopeptides could be easily achieved through a modulation of elution buffer. With this multifunctional nanomaterial, 36 peptides were observed from diluted bovine serum albumin (BSA) tryptic digest and 4 phosphopeptides could be selectively cap

Highly sensitive determination of reduced glutathione based on a cobalt nanoparticle implanted-modified indium tin oxide electrode.

Cobalt nanoparticle modified indium tin oxide (CoNP/ITO) electrodes fabricated by ion implantation were applied for the detection of reduced glutathione (GSH). The CoNP/ITO electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) detector and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The assay performance with regard to GSH were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (I-t). The proposed sensor exhibited a much higher electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of GSH than the bare ITO electrode, with a detection limit of 5 nM. The Co

Sensitive electrochemical detection of vaccinia virus in a solution containing a high concentration of L-ascorbic acid.

Washing processes cannot fully remove interfering species that remain on biosensing surfaces when a sample solution contains a high concentration of interfering species. This study reports an immunosensing scheme employing electroreduction-based electrochemical-chemical (EC) redox cycling that allows sensitive detection of vaccinia virus (VV) in a solution containing a high concentration of L-ascorbic acid (AA). To obtain high signal amplification, an enzymatic reaction by β-D-galactosidase (Gal) is combined with electroreduction-based EC redox cycling by an oxidant. Among the four possible ox

Chemical perturbation of an intrinsically disordered region of TFIID distinguishes two modes of transcription initiation.

Intrinsically disordered proteins/regions (IDPs/IDRs) are proteins or peptide segments that fail to form stable 3-dimensional structures in the absence of partner proteins. They are abundant in eukaryotic proteomes and are often associated with human diseases, but their biological functions have been elusive to study. In this study, we report the identification of a tin(IV) oxochloride-derived cluster that binds an evolutionarily conserved IDR within the metazoan TFIID transcription complex. Binding arrests an isomerization of promoter-bound TFIID that is required for the engagement of Pol II
