Insights into Initial Demyelinating Episodes of Central Nervous System during Puerperium.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory demyelinating disease of central nervous system (CNS) is an inflammatory disease characterized by a high childbearing female predominance. Labor-related alterations for postpartum demyelinating attacks are not entirely clear. This study aimed to summarize clinical features of female patients of reproductive age with initial CNS inflammatory demyelinating attacks during puerperium. METHODS: Fourteen female patients with initial demyelinating events during puerperium between January 2013 and December 2016 were retrospectively studied. Records of clinical features, neuro

Rationale for a long-term evaluation of the consequences of potentially life-threatening maternal conditions and maternal "near-miss" incidents using a multidimensional approach.

Recent advances in health care mean that women survive severe conditions and events related to pregnancy that would previously have resulted in death. Therefore, a greater number of women will experience significant maternal morbidity with significant consequences. Little is known, however, about these long-term consequences. Some investigators have evaluated the repercussions of severe biological or traumatic events, and have reported that survivors are at an increased risk of death in the five years after the event. In addition, they continue to experience both organic and emotional problems

Improving the postnatal outcomes of new mothers.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal depression persists worldwide as a troubling issue for many new mothers and their families. The practice of early discharge within 72 hours after birth from maternity hospitals in Australia requires community-based care of new mothers, typically provided by community midwives initially, and then by maternal and child health nurses (MCHN). This latter workforce encounters the onset of distress/depression in vulnerable women and is expected to manage their care, but their training does not equip sufficiently them to do this. AIMS: The aim of the study was to evaluate the e

Morphine pretreatment increases opioid inhibitory effects on maternal behavior.

Ongoing maternal behavior in rats is under the inhibitory influence of opiates. Exposure to drugs of abuse may result in a progressive and enduring enhancement of their reinforcing effects. Little attention has been paid to the possibility that puerperal treatment with morphine may lead to sensitization to this drug, ultimately influencing the effects of opiates on maternal behavior. The aim of the present study was to investigate if the abrupt withdrawal of repeated treatment with morphine chlorhydrate (MC) during late pregnancy and early lactation may influence maternal behavior in lactating

Pathological fear of cot death.

Cot death (sudden infant death syndrome) is one of the most common causes of death in the first year of life. Four cases with a pathological fear of cot death are presented. All the patients were depressed and in 2 cases the fear of cot death had an obsessional quality. In all cases there were complications during pregnancy (miscarriage, threatened abortion, recurrent vomiting in last trimester). In 1 case, the patient knew 3 mothers who had suffered cot deaths; in another, the infant was gravely ill in the neonatal period. Pathological fear of cot death can be recognised by the presence of tw

The effectiveness of Parenthood-Centred Psychotherapy on perinatal maternal depressive-anxiety symptoms and child development in a disadvantaged population.

INTRODUCTION: Untreated depressive-anxiety symptoms during pregnancy can lead to recurrent or chronic maternal depression, with negative consequences for child development and the mother-infant bond. The hypothesis is that Parenthood-Centred Psychotherapy reduces depressive-anxiety symptoms and promotes the mother-infant bond in a disadvantaged population, with high rates of these symptoms. Methods. This study was conducted between 2015 and 2023 in a Primary Health Care Centre in Barcelona in 160 women with prepartum depressive-anxiety symptoms, focusing on outcomes for the mother, the child a

Prenatal and postnatal intimate partner violence, depression, and infant-mother touch.

Touch is a primary form of communication for mother-infant dyads in the infant's first year of life. Stressors such as intimate partner violence (IPV) and maternal depression experienced during the perinatal period may interfere with mother-infant touch via prenatal programming of the stress response and disrupted parenting. Mother-infant touch research typically focuses on maternal touch, while research on infant touch is limited. However, research suggests that infants sometimes lead interactive behavior, with mothers responding and adapting to their infants. Therefore, the aim of the presen

Effectiveness of an online biopsychosocial cognitive-behavioural preventive intervention to improve wellbeing and mental health during pregnancy. Randomized controlled trial (BienGestar).

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a period of significant psychological, physiological, and social change, which can increase vulnerability to emotional distress. While many interventions focus on detecting and treating symptoms of anxiety and depression during pregnancy, fewer target the promotion of wellbeing. The BienGestar study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a digital, biopsychosocial, cognitive-behavioural intervention designed to promote mental health, wellbeing, and physical health during pregnancy and the postpartum period in a community-based sample of healthy pregnant women. METHODS:

Analysis of the Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Perinatal Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in Elderly Parturients.

Aims/Background Perinatal obsessive-compulsive symptoms are significant predictors of increased postpartum anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. These symptoms have persistent adverse effects on both mothers and children. Currently, there are few reports in the literature on obsessive-compulsive disorder in elderly parturient women in China. This study primarily discusses the clinical characteristics of perinatal obsessive-compulsive symptoms in elderly parturient women and analyzes their influencing factors, aiming to provide references for clinical prevention and treatment. Methods This

Transition to motherhood in type 1 diabetes: design of the pregnancy and postnatal well-being in transition questionnaires.

BACKGROUND: Life transitions are associated with high levels of stress affecting health behaviours among people with Type 1 diabetes. Transition to motherhood is a major transition with potential complications accelerated by pregnancy with risks of adverse childbirth outcomes and added anxiety and worries about pregnancy outcomes. Further, preparing and going through pregnancy requires vigilant attention to a diabetes management regimen and detailed planning of everyday activities with added stress on women. Psychological and social well-being during and after pregnancy are integral for good p

The effects of perinatal depression and anxiety on memory, attention, and cognitive flexibility: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Women in the perinatal period often report experiencing cognitive difficulties, such as forgetfulness, disorientation, and a reduced attention span. However, evidence from objective neuropsychological studies is inconsistent. Depressive and anxiety symptoms have been proposed as potential contributors to these cognitive challenges, with some studies suggesting a negative association between mood disturbances and cognitive performance during pregnancy and postpartum. This review aims to characterize the relationship between perinatal depressive and anxiety symptoms and cognitive functi

The relationship between reduced child spacing and depression in mothers: A cross-sectional study in Karachi, Pakistan.

Short inter-birth intervals may increase maternal psychological stress and have been hypothesized to contribute to depressive symptoms. We assessed the association between recent birth spacing and depression in mothers in Karachi, Pakistan. We conducted a cross-sectional, interviewer-administered survey of mothers recruited via convenience sampling from public parks and shopping malls in Karachi. Eligible participants were mothers with ≥2 children who had delivered within the past five years; women who were currently pregnant or <2 months postpartum were excluded. Depressive symptoms were meas

Developmental Pathways Linking Maternal Depressive Symptoms with Parenting Quality and Preschool Children's Screen Time: The Role of Children's Behavioural Problems.

BACKGROUND: Maternal depressive symptoms have been associated with adverse child and family outcomes, including child behavioural problems, suboptimal parenting quality, and increased child screen time. However, the developmental pathways linking these factors remain poorly understood. The first model of this study examined whether children's behavioural problems mediated associations between maternal depressive symptoms and later parenting quality (i.e., nurturant, hostile, consistent). The second model then investigated whether these pathways extended to preschool children's screen time duri

Midwives' perspectives on exploring emotional well-being during prenatal and postnatal care in the Italian contest: a qualitative study (the BEN_EM_OS study).

PROBLEM: Perinatal mental health issues, including depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder, affect 10-20% of women during pregnancy and postpartum. Despite routine healthcare contact, 50% of cases go undetected and untreated. BACKGROUND: Maternal health issues are crucial for maternal well-being, infant development, and family functioning. However, gaps exist in screening practices and service provision across healthcare systems. In Italy, midwives provide comprehensive care, emotional support, and risk factor evaluation. The Italian Ministry of Health launched a pro

Association of cesarean section delivery with childhood behavior: a systematic review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: This review will evaluate the association between cesarean section delivery and child behavior problems. INTRODUCTION: Cesarean section (C-section) deliveries account for over 30% of deliveries in Canada and 21% of all births globally. Mode of delivery via C-section has been associated with altered maternal mental health in the postpartum period, and postpartum depression is linked to an increased risk of internalizing and externalizing behaviors in children. Given the high rates of C-section deliveries worldwide, it is important to determine how mode of delivery impacts child beha

Reproductive healthcare experiences of women with cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about pregnancy rates in women with disabilities in general and even less is known about women with child-onset disabilities such as cerebral palsy (CP). HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that discussions about pregnancy with healthcare providers and pregnancy rates for woman with CP would be related to their functional levels. METHODS: Survey methodology was used to gather information about demographics, function, whether women were asked about their desire for children, pregnancy outcomes, and services offered during pregnancy and postpartum. RESULTS: Of the 375 wome

Health-related quality of life after induction of labor versus expectant monitoring in gestational hypertension or preeclampsia at term.

OBJECTIVE: Gestational hypertension (GH) and preeclampsia (PE) are major contributors to maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. In GH or PE, labor may be either induced or monitored expectantly. We studied maternal health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) after induction of labor versus expectant monitoring in GH or PE at term. We performed the HR-QoL study alongside a multicenter randomized controlled trial comparing induction of labor to expectant monitoring in women with GH or PE after 36 weeks. METHODS: We used written questionnaires, covering background characteristics, condition-

Low-dose ferric carboxymaltose vs. oral iron for improving hemoglobin levels in postpartum East Asian women: A randomized controlled trial.

Ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) is widely used to correct anemia and replenish iron stores rapidly, particularly in Western populations. However, lower doses of FCM are typically used in East Asia, with limited research on their effectiveness, especially in postpartum women. This randomized controlled trial aimed to assess the efficacy of low-dose FCM compared with oral ferrous sulfate in increasing postpartum hemoglobin (Hb) levels and replenishing iron stores in East Asian women. Sixty postpartum women with Hb levels < 10 g/dL and serum ferritin ≤ 30 ng/mL were randomized to receive either intra

Evaluation of the effect of acupuncture on weight loss in postpartum obese women: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women gain an average weight of 16.6 ± 4.8 kg during pregnancy, with weight retention of 4 kg at 6 months, 4 kg at 12 months, and 2.9 kg at 18 months postpartum. At 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after delivery, 61.92 %, 68.73 %, 78.18 % and 84.24 % of women whose BMI returned to the normal range, respectively. Obesity has negative effects on postpartum women's physical and mental health. Prior research has suggested that acupuncture may be beneficial for weight loss. This study investigates the effectiveness of manual acupuncture (MA) for treating postpartum obesity (PO), compared
