Tear functions in patients with vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a common, acquired, pigmentary disorder characterized by the loss of melanocytes. In this study, we evaluated the ophthalmalogic abnomalies of patients with vitiligo with regard to tear functions. METHODS: The patients and control subjects underwent examinations via the Schirmer's test, tear film break-up time (BUT), and Rose Bengal staining. RESULTS: Schirmer test values in patients with vitiligo were lower than those in the control subjects, but the differences were not statistically significant (P = 0.200). In addition, the BUT values of patients with vitiligo were

Facial lesions in frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA): Clinicopathological features in a series of 12 cases.

BACKGROUND: Facial lesions in frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) have been poorly described in published series. OBJECTIVE: We sought to describe facial lesions in FFA. METHODS: We reviewed our series of 55 cases of FFA, selecting 12 cases with clinically significant facial lesions. We performed a histologic study of these lesions. RESULTS: In addition to the observations already described in the literature such as facial papules or follicular red dots, we observed perifollicular and diffuse erythema, sometimes with a reticular pattern, and the gradual appearance of pigmented macules on facia

Disease-related behavioral patterns and experiences affect quality of life in children and adolescents with vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is an acquired, non-contagious depigmentation disorder involving a patchy loss of skin color. It often leads to stigmatization, embarrassment, and reduced quality of life (QoL) in adult patients. Little is known about children's reactions. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore disease-related QoL and experiences in a multinational group of children and adolescents. METHODS: Quality of life, disease-related experiences and behavior, and sociodemographic data were examined in 24 boys and 50 girls (age range: 7-17 years) using the Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index

[Fegelers syndrome, acquired port-wine stain or acquired capillary malformation: three cases and a literature review].

BACKGROUND: Port-wine stains or capillary malformations are generally congenital. Very few cases of acquired port-wine stains in adults have been described, and these occur particularly after trauma. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We report three cases of acquired port-wine stains and we performed a review of the literature using the keywords "port-wine stain", "capillary malformation", "angioma" and "acquired" in the Medline database PubMed. All relevant articles were included. RESULTS: Two male patients and one female patient consulted for one or more angiomatous lesions, located respectively on the

Dermatoscopy of facial actinic keratosis, intraepidermal carcinoma, and invasive squamous cell carcinoma: a progression model.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the dermoscopic features of keratinocyte skin cancer. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the dermoscopic features of facial actinic keratosis (AK), intraepidermal carcinoma (IEC), moderately to poorly differentiated invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and well-differentiated SCC of the keratoacanthoma type. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of dermoscopic images of histopathologically diagnosed keratinocyte skin cancer. RESULTS: A total of 243 (70 AK, 71 IEC, 78 SCC, and 24 keratoacanthomas) tumors of the face from 243 patients (mean age: 71.1 y

Tinea versicolor and visceral leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic in several areas in the Sudan. The disease is associated with depressed cellular immunity. Tinea versicolor is a normal commensal of the skin which can become pathogenic particularly in patients with depressed cell-mediated immunity. Patients with VL have a high prevalence of tinea versicolor. METHODS: One hundred and thirty patients with parasitologic confirmation of VL were screened for tinea versicolor infection. In the suspected cases the diagnosis was made by demonstrating the fungal hyphae and spores in skin scrapings. All patients were

Comparison of the flashlamp pulsed dye laser with the argon tunable dye laser with robotized handpiece for facial telangiectasia.

This prospective study compares the efficacy, side effects, and patient acceptance of the flashlamp pulsed dye laser (FPDL) with the argon tunable dye laser with robotized handpiece (ATDL/H) for facial telangiectasias. Seventeen adult patients with bilaterally symmetric facial telangiectasias were enrolled. The right cheek on each patient was treated in one session with the FPDL at a fluence of 6.0-6.75 J/cm2 and a spot size of 5 mm. The left cheek was treated at the same session with the ATDL/H at a power of 1 W, a fluence of 26-27 J/cm2, and a hexagonal treatment area of 13 mm (127 individua

Sun-induced aging. Clinical and laboratory observations in man.

Chronic sun exposure can result in numerous changes in human skin, particularly the skin of fair-skinned individuals. These changes include wrinkling, elastosis, actinic keratoses, irregular pigmentation, telangiectasia, and skin cancer. Most of these alterations had formerly been considered to be caused by UVB wavelengths, which are the wavelengths probably most responsible. However, a number of recent studies have demonstrated that UVA can also cause burning, elastosis, and skin cancer. Thus, individuals exposed to intense UVB from sunlight coupled with intense UVA from suntan parlors are li

Contact sensitizers in resins based on phenol and formaldehyde.

A paratertiary-butyl phenol-formaldehyde resin is present in the routine patch test series of the International Contact Dermatitis Research Group. This resin was not sufficient to trace patients with contact allergy to resins based on phenol and formaldehyde (P-F-R). A particular resol resin (P-F-R-2) was demonstrated to be a good tracer of patients with P-F-R hypersensitivity. 2-methylol phenol (2-MP), 4-methylol phenol (4-MP) and 2,4,6-trimethylol phenol (2,4,6-MP) were, besides formaldehyde, known sensitizers in P-F-R. The sensitizing potentials were confirmed both in humans and in guinea p

Cutaneous nocardiosis. Case reports and review.

Two cases of cutaneous nocardial infection are reported. The Nocardia species are gram-positive, partially acid-fast bacteria. Cutaneous involvement may develop as one of four types: (1) mycetoma, (2) lymphocutaneous (sporotrichoid) infection, (3) superficial skin infection, or (4) systemic disease with cutaneous involvement. A review of each of these types of infection is included, as well as potential clues that may suggest the diagnosis of nocardiosis.

Development of Rifampicin-Indocyanine Green-Loaded Perfluorocarbon Nanodroplets for Photo-Chemo-Probiotic Antimicrobial Therapy.

Acne vulgaris, generally resulted from overgrowth of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), is one of the most difficult-to-treat facial dermatoses and more than 90% of adolescents experienced the disease worldwide. Because the innate non-lymphoid immune system cannot effectively eliminate excessive P. acnes from the skin surface, so far the therapy of acne vulgaris is still mainly dependent on antibiotic treatment. However, long-term or overdose of antibiotics may initiate microbial drug resistance and/or generate unexpected side effects that seriously hamper the use of antibiotics in the clinic…

Development and Implementation of a Web-Based International Registry Dedicated to Atypical Pigmented Skin Lesions of the Face: Teledermatologic Investigation on Epidemiology and Risk Factors.

Background: Atypical pigmented facial lesions (aPFLs) often display clinical and dermoscopic equivocal and/or overlapping features, thus causing a challenging and delayed diagnosis and/or inappropriate excisions. No specific registry dedicated to aPFL paired with clinical data is available to date. Methods: The dataset is hosted on a specifically designed web platform. Each complete case was composed of the following data: (1) one dermoscopic picture; (2) one clinical picture; (3) two lesion data, that is, maximum diameter and facial location (e.g., orbital area/forehead/nose/cheek/chin/mouth)

The use of retinoic acid in association with microneedling in the treatment of epidermal melasma: efficacy and oxidative stress parameters.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of isolated treatment with retinoic acid and its combination with the microneedling technique in facial melasma, seeking to associate these results with possible oxidative damage. This is a blinded randomized clinical trial with 42 women with facial melasma (skin phototype I-IV), randomized into Group A (microneedling and 5% retinoic acid) or Group B (5% retinoic acid alone). Four procedures were applied with 15 days intervals (4 blood collections). Clinical improvement was assessed using the Melasma Area Severity Index (MASI). Serum oxidative str

The efficacy and tolerability of 5-aminolevulinic acid 5% thermosetting gel photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the treatment of mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris. A two-center, prospective assessor-blinded, proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, commonly treated with topical or systemic drugs, according to the severity of the condition. Retinoids and antibiotic compounds are considered cornerstone approaches in this condition. However, low adherence to the therapy and the issue of bacterial resistance undermine the efficacy in the long term. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with 20% aminolevulinic acid (ALA) has shown to be effective in the treatment of inflammatory acne. Skin tolerability, however, could be a limiting factor for a widespread use of this approach. A new formu
