A new commercially developed cytomegalovirus (CMV)-IgM ELISA was found to be sensitive and specific when compared with sucrose gradient fractionation of Ig classes in CMV antibody-positive and negative sera. The presence of CMV IgM in patients' sera correlated with positive virus isolation from circulating mononuclear blood cells and urine. Serial examinations of patients with primary or recent CMV infection revealed a typical sequence of IgM and IgG development. The frequency of CMV isolation declined as the concentration of IgM decreased and the IgG levels increased. Since the isolation of C

The diagnosis, treatment, and referral of married women with sexual dysfunctions require information about the current physiologic deficit, previous sexual capacity, level of sexual desire, masturbatory experience, means of orgasmic attainment, preferred sexual partner, quality of marriage, husband's sexual capacities, and method of contraception. For classification purposes, the three basic physiologic deficits--excitement phase dysfunction, orgasmic phase dysfunction, and vaginismus--are subdivided into primary and secondary types. Primary dysfunctions represent longstanding developmental pr

In the framework of a symposium on changing sexual behavior in a changing society problems are discussed which the modified mores have created for a number of individuals or groups, for therapeutic intervention and research concepts. Examples, assumed to be not isolated to one or the other case, are used as illustrations.

The family planning needs of sexual minority women (SMW) are an understudied but growing area of research. SMW have family planning needs, both similar to and distinct from their exclusively heterosexual peers. Specifically, SMW experience unintended pregnancies at higher rates than their exclusively heterosexual peers, but factors that increase this risk are not well understood. Contraception use is not uncommon among SMW, but lesbian women are less likely to use contraception than bisexual or exclusively heterosexual women. High rates of unintended pregnancy suggest contraception is underuse

BACKGROUND: Doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP) is a promising intervention to reduce bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We evaluated the effect of doxy-PEP on STI incidence and antimicrobial resistance in men who have sex with men and transgender women for up to 12 months of follow-up, inlcuding an open-label extension.
METHODS: DoxyPEP, an open-label trial in Seattle (WA, USA) and San Francisco (CA, USA) among men who have sex with men and transgender women with at least one bacterial STI in the past year, randomly assigned participants by clinic (with computer-g

BACKGROUND: Understanding how HIV self-testing (HIVST) can meet the testing needs of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) and trans people whose social networks vary is key to upscaling HIVST implementation. We aim to develop a contextual understanding of social networks and HIV testing needs among GBMSM (cis and transgender) and trans women in SELPHI (An HIV Self-testing Public Health Intervention), the UK's largest randomised trial on HIVST.
METHODS: This study re-analysed qualitative interviews conducted from 2015 to 2020. Forty-three in-person interviews were thematic

BACKGROUND: The social distancing measures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic had far reaching effects on sexual behavior worldwide. However, it remains unclear whether sexual contact with non-steady partners was a contributor to the spread of SARS-CoV-2. The aim of this study was to (i) describe risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity after the first pandemic wave among people using HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) in Zurich, Switzerland, including sexual contact with non-steady partners, and (ii) assess whether the SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity among PrEP users in this time period diffe

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are more vulnerable to acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In 2019, for instance, 74% of European Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ng) cases among males affected MSM. A recent report by the World Health Organization showed that most of the 2020' interim targets to end STIs by 2030 had not been met. A broadened understanding of STI transmission networks could guide future elimination strategies and reduce the STI burden. Therefore, we used whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to determine Ng-clusters and assess sexual mixing.
METHODS: WGS was performed

Over the past 10 years, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have seen a significant resurgence in the United States despite the availability of effective treatments and reliable prevention methods. Rhode Island has experienced a similar uptick in the incidence of syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea, with many cases occurring among gay, bisexual, men who have sex with men (GBMSM), which coincides with a recent concerning rise in congenital syphilis cases. We reviewed the most recent STI trends for the state of Rhode Island in 2022. During this year, 6,883 cases of STIs were reported to the Dep

Sex chromosome disorders severely compromise gametogenesis in both males and females. In oogenesis, the presence of an additional Y chromosome or the loss of an X chromosome disturbs the robust production of oocytes1-5. Here we efficiently converted the XY chromosome set to XX without an additional Y chromosome in mouse pluripotent stem (PS) cells. In addition, this chromosomal alteration successfully eradicated trisomy 16, a model of Down's syndrome, in PS cells. Artificially produced euploid XX PS cells differentiated into mature oocytes in culture with similar efficiency to native XX PS cel

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 restrictions severely reduced face-to-face sexual health services, an important access point for condoms. We examine whether gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in the UK had difficulty accessing condoms during the first year of the pandemic, and if so, which groups were most affected.
METHODS: Questions about difficulty accessing condoms were asked as part of a short, online cross-sectional survey of GBMSM undertaken November/December 2021, recruited via social media and Grindr. Eligible participants were UK-resident GBMSM (cis/trans/gender-diverse
