Promethazine affects optokinetic but not vestibular responses in monkeys.

BACKGROUND: Promethazine is used to treat motion sickness including Space Adaptation Syndrome, but there is incomplete information about how it affects vestibular and optokinetic responses. METHODS: Vestibular and optokinetic nystagmus, recorded with eye coils, were characterized in monkeys after administration of promethazine at dosages approximately equivalent to those used by humans in space. RESULTS: The initial increase of horizontal eye velocity during optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) was reduced after receiving the drug. Consequently, it took a longer time for eye velocity to rise to 60% o…

Transdermal scopolamine alters phasic REM activity in normal young adults.

Transdermal scopolamine has been widely used for the prevention of motion-sickness by travelers due to its potent anticholinergic effects and the ease of administration. Nevertheless, its effects on sleep physiology are not known, despite the wellknown fact that the administration of scopolamine as an injection or an oral form could influence the sleep architecture, especially prolonging rapid eye movement (REM) sleep latency and shortening duration of REM sleep. This study aimed to measure the influence of transdermal scopolamine on REM sleep in order to examine whether it affects REM sleep a

The effectiveness of a single intravenous dose of ondansetron.

This paper reviews data from 3 randomised, double-blind, parallel-group studies carried out in patients receiving high-dose cisplatin chemot … that predispose patients to emesis, e.g., female gender, patients with a history of chemotherapy or motion sickness and the dose of cisplatin. The ondansetron dosing regimen for patients receiving a highly-emetogenic chemotherapy (8-32 mg i.v. followed by 8 mg orally twice daily) is both simple and flexible.

Pyruvate accumulation may contribute to acceleration-induced impairment of physical and cognitive abilities: an experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue can be induced after acceleration exposure, however its mechanism is still unclear. The aim of the present study was to examine whether metabolites' changes can decrease cognitive and physical function after acceleration. METHODS: Graybiel scale and Fatigue Self-rating scale were used to assess the seasickness and fatigue degrees of 87 male seafarers respectively after sailing. To test the effect of pyruvate on cognitive and physical functions, five different doses of pyruvate were administrated into rats. Insulin can reduce the accumulation of pyruvate. To observe the ins

Effect of meal glycemic load and caffeine consumption on prolonged monotonous driving performance.

OBJECTIVE: Monotonous driving involves low levels of stimulation and high levels of repetition and is essentially an exercise in sustained attention and vigilance. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of consuming a high or low glycemic load meal on prolonged monotonous driving performance. The effect of consuming caffeine with a high glycemic load meal was also examined. METHOD: Ten healthy, non-diabetic participants (7 males, age 51±7yrs, mean±SD) completed a repeated measures investigation involving 3 experimental trials. On separate occasions, participants were provided one

Optimizing rTMS treatment of a balance disorder with EEG neural synchrony and functional connectivity.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been increasingly used for its potential treatment effects across diverse mental disorders. However, the treatment effect is elusive and the rate of positive responders is not high, which make it in great demand of optimizing rTMS protocols to improve the treatment effects and the rate. In this regard, neural activity guided optimization has indicated great potential in several neuroimaging studies. In this paper, we present our ongoing work on optimizing rTMS treatment of a balance disorder, i.e., Mal de Debarquement syndrome (MdDS), by

A comparison of techniques to mitigate Simulator Adaptation Syndrome.

UNLABELLED: We investigated the effectiveness of galvanic cutaneous stimulation (GCS) and auditory stimulation in mitigating simulator adaptation syndrome (SAS). Fifteen drivers (9 men; M age = 23.2 years) participated in a driving simulation experiment comparing three different stimulation conditions (GCS, auditory stimulation and no stimulation as a base line condition) in curves on a virtual urban circuit. GCS and auditory stimulation decreased SAS by reducing head sway. Both sources of stimulation can be recommended as countermeasures against SAS. We encourage the use of stimuli which infl

Effects of persistent Mal de debarquement syndrome on balance, psychological traits, and motor cortex exctiability.

Mal de debarquement syndrome (MdDS) is a poorly characterized and understood disorder of perceived motion. We sought to characterize postural control and the psychological impact of MdDS. Additionally, we explored whether patients with MdDS exhibit altered corticospinal and intracortical excitability. In a case-control study we compared patients with MdDS to age- and sex-matched controls (n=8/group). Postural stability (σr) was quantified from plane phase plots based on center or pressure, and psychological indices of depression, fatigue and kinesiophobia were obtained. Transcranial magnetic s

Hypergravity studies in the Netherlands.

It looks like that with the utilization phase of the International Space Station (ISS) scientists will have the possibility to perform long duration and more sophisticated microgravity experiments than could be performed previously. In preparation for these spaceflight studies, ground based experiment tools for simulated (or real) microgravity and hypergravity are important. To provide the infrastructure and user support necessary to perform these ground based studies we have setup the Dutch Experiment Support Center, DESC. This paper will focus on the three Dutch centrifuge facilities. It is

Clinical verification of a unilateral otolith test.

In a previous study we reported promising results for a new test to differentiate in vivo unilateral otolith functions. That study pointed to a need for further validation on known pathological cases. In this presentation we will detail the results gathered on a group of clinically verified vestibular defectives (verum) and a normal (control) group. The subjects in the verum group were former patients of the ENT clinic of the university hospital. These subjects had usually suffered from neurinoma of the VIIth cranial nerve or inner ear infections. All had reguired surgical intervention includi

The Canadian Forces Airsickness Rehabilitation Program, 1981-1991.

Airsickness is a significant obstacle in the training of some student pilots. When conventional therapy fails, desensitization therapy may be indicated. Using experience gained by the RAF and USAF, the Canadian Forces (CF) began such a program in 1981. This paper reports program results from 1981-1991. Following subject identification, treatment consists of three phases: biofeedback relaxation therapy, ground-based desensitization training and in-flight desensitization therapy with a pilot-flight surgeon. Employing a definition of cure used by the RAF, success was compared with that of the RAF

[Pharmacological correction of central nervous system function in exposure to Coriolis acceleration].

Healthy volunteers with a low vestibular tolerance were exposed to Coriolis acceleration. Potassium orotate, pyracetame and riboxine were used as prophylactic measures against disorders in the function of the vestibular apparatus and higher compartments of the higher nervous system. The central nervous function was assessed with respect to the spectral power of electroencephalograms, short-term memory and mental performance. Potassium orotate given at a dose of 40 mg/kg body weight/day during 12-14 days as well as pyracetame given at a dose of 30 mg/kg body weight/day during 3 or 7 days increa

Double-blind randomized N-of-1 trial of transcranial alternating current stimulation for mal de débarquement syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS) is a medically refractory neurotological disorder characterized by persistent oscillating vertigo that follows a period of entrainment to oscillating motion such as experienced during sea or air travel. Fronto-occipital hypersynchrony may correlate with MdDS symptom severity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Individuals with treatment refractory MdDS lasting at least 6 months received single administrations of three fronto-occipital transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) protocols in an "n-of-1" double-blind randomized design: alpha frequency

Semicircular Canal Dehiscence Syndrome and Vestibular Dysfunction Disqualify a Military Student Pilot.

BACKGROUND: Humans detect motion and gravity via the labyrinthine system of the inner ear, which consists of the vestibule and the semicircular canals. The vestibular system provides three major functions for maintaining balance and orientation. First, it maximizes the effectiveness of the visual system. Second, it provides orientational information necessary for performing both skilled and reflexive motor activities. Third, in the absence of vision, the vestibular system provides a reasonably accurate perception of motion and position. Although these organs provide important cues for basic or
