Epidemiology of sheep myiases in São Paulo State, Brazil.

A survey of Diptera species causing cutaneous myiases on sheep in Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil was made to determine seasonal incidence, predilection sites and the factors predisposing to infestation. Sheep were checked daily for myiases for one year. At two week intervals larvae from wounds were collected for identification. Only larvae of Dermatobia hominis and Cochliomyia hominivorax were found. Myiases due to C. hominivorax were observed during the whole year with high incidence from January to April. The feet, vulva, tail and scrotum were most frequently infested. Wounds were the commonest

[The kinetics of specific serum antibodies in sheep infested with sheep bot larvae].

The kinetics of specific antibodies of the blood serum of sheep experimentally infested with 80, 160 and 1000 specimens of Oestrus ovis larvae was examined. The affinity pure serum IgG and the immunoferment analysis (ELISA) were used for qualitative estimation of specific antibodies. It has been shown that the level of specific antibodies correlates with the larval biomass and is connected with ontogenesis of this parasite. The younger animals, which were infested for the first time, are characterized by more intensive production of specific IgG than adult reinfested ones. The ways of immunity

Ophthalmomyiasis treated by argon-laser photocoagulation.

A live, subretinal fly larva was observed in a 16-year-old Caucasian female. Argon-laser photocoagulation killed the larva without a destructive inflammatory response. The patient's vision improved from 20/200 to 20/20 as the eye recovered. Clinical photographs demonstrate the larva and the acute and later healed pathopneumonic subretinal tracks. The laser photocoagulation technique is described.

Genetic and behavioral analyses suggest that larval and adult stages of Lucilia cuprina employ different sensory systems to detect rotten beef.

BACKGROUND: The blowfly Lucilia cuprina is a destructive parasite of sheep that causes flystrike or myiasis. Larvae consume the animal's living flesh, producing large wounds that can lead to death. The main aim of this study was to identify genes that may play important roles in the behavior and physiology of L. cuprina larvae. METHODS: An RNA-Seq analysis of RNA from whole larvae at different developmental stages and third-instar head and gut tissues was used to identify sensory receptors and other genes relevant to the physiology of L. cuprina larvae. In addition, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing w

Dot-ELISA based on recombinant Hypodermin C of Przhevalskiana silenus for field diagnosis of goat warble fly infestation.

Goat warble fly infestation (GWFI) is an economically important myiasis caused by larvae of Przhevalskiana silenus (Diptera, Oestridae), prevalent in countries of the Mediterranean Basin and Indian subcontinent. GWFI is characterized by the presence of subcutaneous warbles at the lumbar and sacral region of dorsum in the infested animal. The early larval instars (L1 and L2) remain inaccessible to physical detection due to their small size and subcutaneous presence thus causing hindrance in the diagnosis. The objective of present study was to develop a field applicable early diagnostic interven

Bacterial association observations in Lucilia sericata and Lucilia cuprina organs through 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

Blowfly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) species Lucilia sericata (Meigen) and related species Lucilia cuprina (Wiedmann) are important agricultural pests, assist in forensic fields and also have a therapeutic role in medicine. Both species (though predominantly L. sericata) are utilised in a clinical setting for maggot debridement therapy (MDT) where the larvae ingest necrotic tissue and bacteria from non-healing wounds. Conversely, larvae of L. cuprina feed invasively, as major initiators of sheep myiasis in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, among other regions. Both species exhibit larval and adu

Incongruent nuclear and mitochondrial genetic structure of new world screwworm fly populations due to positive selection of mutations associated with dimethyl- and diethyl-organophosphates resistance.

Livestock production is an important economic activity in Brazil, which has been suffering significant losses due to the impact of parasites. The New World screwworm (NWS) fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax, is an ectoparasite and one of the most important myiasis-causing flies endemic to the Americas. The geographic distribution of NWS has been reduced after the implementation of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), being eradicated in North America and part of Central America. In South America, C. hominivorax is controlled by chemical insecticides, although indiscriminate use can cause selection of

[Larva migrans].

Larbish, cutaneous larva migrans or creeping eruption, is a serpiginous cutaneous eruption caused by skin penetration of infective larva from various animal nematodes. Hookworms (Ancylostoma brasiliense, A. caninum) are the most common causative parasites. They live in the intestines of dogs and cats where their ova are deposited in the animal feces. In sandy and shady soil, when temperature and moisture are elevated, the ova hatch and mature into infective larva. Infection occurs when humans have contact with the infected soil. Infective larva penetrate the exposed skin of the body, commonly

Exploring Life History Choices: Using Temperature and Substrate Type as Interacting Factors for Blowfly Larval and Female Preferences.

Blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) present a wide range of larval lifestyles, typically classified as obligate parasitism, facultative parasitism, and complete sapro-necrophagy. Several parasitic species, both obligate and facultative, are considered to be of sanitary and economic importance, as their larvae can cause myiasis (maggot infestation in live tissue). However, it is noteworthy that the adult female plays a decisive role as she chooses the oviposition site, and, therefore, largely determines the feeding habit and developmental conditions of the larvae. In this study, two protocols ar

Bacteria isolated from the different developmental stages and larval organs of the obligate parasitic fly, Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae).

Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is the major myiasis-causing fly species in the whole of Eurasia for most important domestic animals. The aim of the present work was to obtain data on the culturable bacteria isolated under aerobic conditions from this fly: bacteria were isolated from all developmental stages (larvae, pupa, and imago) of Wohlfahrtia magnifica, and the third-stage larval organs were also sampled. To determine the possible antagonistic effects between the dominant bacterial groups, an antibiosis assay was carried out. Plating and isolation of bacteria was performed

Case studies of emergency management of screwworm.

Screwworm myiasis, caused by infestation of even minor wounds by the obligative parasitic larval stages of the New World screwworm (NWS) (Cochliomyia hominivorax) or Old World screwworm (OWS) (Chrysomya bezziana) flies, is a major cause of livestock morbidity and mortality in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. The two parasites occur in different hemispheres but are remarkably homologous. Animal health emergencies result from the invasion of new territories by the parasites or, in the case of NWS, reinfestation of areas from which the parasite had been eradicated after great effor

Characterization of a major peritrophic membrane protein, peritrophin-44, from the larvae of Lucilia cuprina. cDNA and deduced amino acid sequences.

The peritrophic membrane is a semi-permeable chitinous matrix lining the gut of most insects and is thought to have important roles in the maintenance of insect gut structure, facilitation of digestion, and protection from invasion by microrganisms and parasites. Proteins are integral components of this matrix, although the structures and functions of these proteins have not been characterized in any detail. The peritrophic membrane from the larvae of the fly Lucilia cuprina, the primary agent of cutaneous myiasis in sheep, was shown to contain six major integral peritrophic membrane proteins.
