We describe our experience of using continuous papaveretum infusions to control pain in 24 children admitted on 45 occasions with painful sickling crisis. The children were aged from 1.7 to 14.3 years. Infusion duration ranged from one to nine days (median three days), total dose from 0.3 to 21 mg/kg (median 2.4 mg/kg), with a pronounced tendency for dosage to increase with increasing age. No respiratory depression was observed. One infusion was discontinued because of cerebral toxicity.

We report a prospective double-blind trial of the efficacy of a single epidural dose of buprenorphine on pain after spinal decompression. Postoperative pain was assessed by a linear analogue pain chart and by the additional requirement for analgesia. The patients receiving buprenorphine were significantly more comfortable (p less than 0.005) and required less analgesia in the first 12 hours after operation (p less than 0.05) than the control group. This simple procedure is recommended as an effective and safe method of reducing pain.

The effect of three commonly used premedicants and a control on anaesthesia with ICI 35, 868 is described. Two randomized studies were performed--one a group study of induction characteristics at 2 mg kg-1 and the other a detailed study in patients undergoing minor gynaecological surgery with an induction dose of 1.5 mg kg-1 and maintenance with incremental doses plus 66% nitrous oxide in oxygen. This is a study based on data from all Coroners' case-files (Years 1969-1976) and a 'psychological post-mortem' study of all suicides for the year 1974--57 cases comprising of 39 males and 18 females. The trend of aged suicide in Singapore, the demographic data of the aged suicide population, the methods used by the aged suicide and the causative factors associated with suicide in aged are recorded, analysed and discussed. A study was undertaken to attempt to relate the distribution of exogenous factors to the varying incidences of esophageal cancer in the Caspian Littoral of Iran. For the study, 38 villages were chosen by random sampling in 14 regions defined by their esophageal cancer incidence and environmental characteristics.
