Executive function abilities in autism and Tourette syndrome: an information processing approach.

This study used information processing paradigms to provide a detailed examination of executive function abilities in autism. The performance of non-retarded autistic children was compared with that of two matched control groups, one with Tourette Syndrome and the other developmentally normal. Autistic subjects performed as well as controls on tasks requiring global-local processing and inhibition of neutral responses. In contrast to both control groups, however, the autistic sample was significantly impaired on a measure of cognitive flexibility. The performance of children with Tourette Synd

Deficit to stimulus-centered, letter shape representations in a case of "unilateral neglect".

A brain-damaged subject is described whose pattern of performance in various reading tasks can be explained by proposing damage at a level of the word recognition process in which a representation with stimulus-centered, rather than retinal- or word-centered, coordinates is processed. Analysis of her reading performance as a function of topographical arrangement of letters, position of errors in the letter string, and the effects of letter spacing and of adding a prefix or suffix provide evidence not only for the existence of this level of representation (the letter-shape map in a model propos

Perception of visual letter strings in a case of left neglect: manipulation of the word form.

Patients with lesions in the right parietal lobe neglect the left side of nonwords much more than the left side of words. This has been interpreted in terms of a more automatic process in reading words. The case of a patient with left visual neglect after a vascular right parietooccipital lesion is presented. He showed the phenomenon of a word superiority effect over nonword in reading at the beginning in a clinical test with static cards; 6 months later, after some recovery, the same phenomenon could be demonstrated only with tachistoscopic presentation, and it occurred even inside the good r

Unusual causes of sonographic nonvisualization or nonrecognition of the gallbladder: a review.

Nonvisualization of the gallbladder by ultrasound in a fasting patient usually indicates calculous gallbladder disease. However, a number of other less common conditions can prevent gallbladder visualization or recognition. The latter occurs when the location or the morphology of the gallbladder is so altered that the gallbladder is difficult to identify. These conditions can be classified as: (1) congenital anomalies, (2) gallbladder contraction not due to stones, (3) conditions that cause shadowing or reverberation from the near wall of the gallbladder, and (4) the solid gallbladder pattern.

Early onset retinal dystrophies: clinical clues to diagnosis for pediatricians.

INTRODUCTION: Inherited retinal dystrophies are major cause of severe progressive vision loss in children. Early recognition and diagnosis are essential for timely visual rehabilitation during the appropriate stages of the visual development, as well as for genetic diagnosis and possible gene therapy. The aim of this study is to characterize a pattern of the initial visual symptoms, which could help the pediatricians and the primary care providers to suspect an inherited retinal disorder in its early stage. METHODS: We analyzed the initial clinical symptoms, based on parental report during th

Calixarene-Based Supramolecular Sensor Array for Pesticide Discrimination.

The identification and detection of pesticides is crucial to protecting both the environment and human health. However, it can be challenging to conveniently and rapidly differentiate between different types of pesticides. We developed a supramolecular fluorescent sensor array, in which calixarenes with broad-spectrum encapsulation capacity served as recognition receptors. The sensor array exhibits distinct fluorescence change patterns for seven tested pesticides, encompassing herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. With a reaction time of just three minutes, the sensor array proves to be a

Artificial Intelligence and the Clinical Gaze: Visual Practices of AI-Assisted Colonoscopy.

This article examines how commercial artificial intelligence (AI) systems are integrated into the visual practice of colonoscopy and how they reshape the clinical gaze as a sociotechnical and situated mode of perception. Based on ethnographic observations of colonoscopies and in-depth interviews with gastroenterologists, this study analyses the real-time use of AI-based pattern recognition systems during diagnostic procedures. Unlike retrospective image analysis in radiology, AI in colonoscopy operates in vivo and in real time, requiring practitioners to engage with algorithmic markings within

Beyond the Image Frame: An Art-Based Pedagogical Framework for Teaching Diagnostic Reasoning in Breast Ultrasound to Medical Students.

Breast ultrasound is a key diagnostic method for breast cancer and relies heavily on the interpretation of visual cues. At the same time, medical education is increasingly being driven by time constraints, which favors rapid pattern recognition, limiting the scope for reflective image analysis and the diagnostic process. Therefore, the aim of this study was to propose and evaluate an artistic and pedagogical teaching model, inspired by the interpretive practices of Italian High Renaissance painting, as a tool to support the development of diagnostic reasoning in breast ultrasound. This model f

Vascular dilatation in the pelvis: identification with CT and MR imaging.

Focal or diffuse dilatation of pelvic vessels is observed occasionally on computed tomographic or magnetic resonance images. Two major mechanisms may account for dilatation. The first mechanism is development of collateral channels as a result of venous obstruction or stenosis. Symptoms associated with vessel dilatation vary according to the level of obstruction. Portal hypertension also may result in the formation of numerous collateral vessels. In addition, left renal venous compression between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery, which results in blood flow from the left renal vein

Complementary encoding of priors in monkey frontoparietal network supports a dual process of decision-making.

Prior expectations of movement instructions can promote preliminary action planning and influence choices. We investigated how action priors affect action-goal encoding in premotor and parietal cortices and if they bias subsequent free choice. Monkeys planned reaches according to visual cues that indicated relative probabilities of two possible goals. On instructed trials, the reach goal was determined by a secondary cue respecting these probabilities. On rarely interspersed free-choice trials without instruction, both goals offered equal reward. Action priors induced graded free-choice biases

Suboptimal Engagement of High-Level Cortical Regions Predicts Random-Noise-Related Gains in Sustained Attention.

Interindividual variability in outcomes across individuals poses great challenges for the application of noninvasive brain stimulation in psychological research. Here, we examined how the effects of high-frequency transcranial random-noise stimulation (tRNS) on sustained attention varied as a function of a well-studied electrocortical marker: spontaneous theta:beta ratio. Seventy-two participants received sham, 1-mA, and 2-mA tRNS in a double-blind, crossover manner while they performed a sustained-attention task. Receiving 1-mA tRNS was associated with improved sustained attention, whereas th

High-resolution Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Reveals Configural Processing of Cars in Right Anterior Fusiform Face Area of Car Experts.

Visual object expertise correlates with neural selectivity in the fusiform face area (FFA). Although behavioral studies suggest that visual expertise is associated with increased use of holistic and configural information, little is known about the nature of the supporting neural representations. Using high-resolution 7-T functional magnetic resonance imaging, we recorded the multivoxel activation patterns elicited by whole cars, configurally disrupted cars, and car parts in individuals with a wide range of car expertise. A probabilistic support vector machine classifier was trained to differe

Visual number beats abstract numerical magnitude: format-dependent representation of Arabic digits and dot patterns in human parietal cortex.

In numerical cognition, there is a well-known but contested hypothesis that proposes an abstract representation of numerical magnitude in human intraparietal sulcus (IPS). On the other hand, researchers of object cognition have suggested another hypothesis for brain activity in IPS during the processing of number, namely that this activity simply correlates with the number of visual objects or units that are perceived. We contrasted these two accounts by analyzing multivoxel activity patterns elicited by dot patterns and Arabic digits of different magnitudes while participants were explicitly

Representational Similarity of Body Parts in Human Occipitotemporal Cortex.

Regions in human lateral and ventral occipitotemporal cortices (OTC) respond selectively to pictures of the human body and its parts. What are the organizational principles underlying body part responses in these regions? Here we used representational similarity analysis (RSA) of fMRI data to test multiple possible organizational principles: shape similarity, physical proximity, cortical homunculus proximity, and semantic similarity. Participants viewed pictures of whole persons, chairs, and eight body parts (hands, arms, legs, feet, chests, waists, upper faces, and lower faces). The similarit

Selective dissociation between core and extended regions of the face processing network in congenital prosopagnosia.

There is growing consensus that accurate and efficient face recognition is mediated by a neural circuit composed of a posterior "core" and an anterior "extended" set of regions. Here, we characterize the distributed face network in human individuals with congenital prosopagnosia (CP)-a lifelong impairment in face processing-relative to that of matched controls. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we first uncover largely normal activation patterns in the posterior core face patches in CP. We also document normal activity of the amygdala (emotion processing) as well as normal or even e

Happy facial expression processing with different social interaction cues: an fMRI study of individuals with schizotypal personality traits.

In daily life facial expressions change rapidly and the direction of change provides important clues about social interaction. The aim of conducting this study was to elucidate the dynamic happy facial expression processing with different social interaction cues in individuals with (n=14) and without (n=14) schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) traits. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), dynamic happy facial expression processing was examined by presenting video clips depicting happiness appearing and disappearing under happiness inducing ('praise') or reducing ('blame') inter

Neural correlates of impaired emotion processing in manifest Huntington's disease.

The complex phenotype of Huntington's disease (HD) encompasses motor, psychiatric and cognitive dysfunctions, including early impairments in emotion recognition. In this first functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we investigated emotion-processing deficits in 14 manifest HD patients and matched controls. An emotion recognition task comprised short video clips displaying one of six basic facial expressions (sadness, happiness, disgust, fear, anger and neutral). Structural changes between patients and controls were assessed by means of voxel-based morphometry. Along with deficient recogn

The nature of goal-directed action representations in infancy.

A critical question for developmental psychologists concerns how representations in infancy are best characterized. Past and current research provides paradoxical evidence regarding the nature of early representations: in some ways, infants appear to build concrete and specific representations that guide their online perception and understanding of different events; in other ways, infants appear to possess abstract representations that support inferences regarding unseen event outcomes. Characterizing the nature of early representations across domains is a central charge for developmentalists

An investigation of visual contour integration ability in relation to writing performance in primary school students.

A previous study found a visual deficit in contour integration in English readers with dyslexia (Simmers & Bex, 2001). Visual contour integration may play an even more significant role in Chinese handwriting particularly due to its logographic presentation (Lam, Au, Leung, & Li-Tsang, 2011). The current study examined the relationship between children's performance in visual contour (VC) integration and Chinese handwriting. Twenty students from grade 3 to grade 6 were recruited (M=9.51, SD=1.02) from a mainstream primary school using the convenience sampling method. Ten students were identifie

Effect of coordination biofeedback on (re)learning preferred postural patterns in post-stroke patients.

After stroke, ankle-hip coordination during stance is characterized by changes in the postural system dynamics, specifically the disappearance of the in-phase pattern and the reduced stability of the anti-phase pattern. This study was conducted to assess the success of a coordination visual biofeedback for the (re)learning of the two preferred patterns, and to explore the effect of this treatment on postural and functional abilities. Twenty four patients were randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups or to a control group. During one month, patients from experimental groups followed
