We examined the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of plant cysteine proteinases (CPs) derived from pineapple (Ananas comosus) and kiwi fruit (Actinidia deliciosa), and compared their efficacy as anthelmintics to the known effects of CPs from the latex of papaya (Carica papaya) against the rodent intestinal nematode, Heligmosomoides bakeri. Both fruit bromelain and stem bromelain had significant in vitro detrimental effects on H. bakeri but in comparison, actinidain from kiwi fruit had very little effect. However, in vivo trials indicated far less efficacy of stem bromelain and fruit bromelain than

Natural habitat fragmentation and reducing habitat quality have resulted in an increased appearance of Japanese macaques, Macaca fuscata (Gray, 1870), in suburban areas in Japan. To investigate the risk of zoonotic infections, a coprological survey of helminth eggs passed by wild Japanese macaques was carried out in 2009 and 2010 in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Microscopic examination found helminth eggs in high prevalence, and nucleotide sequencing of DNA extracted from the eggs identified Oesophagostomum cf. aculeatum and Trichuris trichiura. A fecal culture also detected infective larvae of Str

A 41-year-old human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive man was hospitalized with complaints of a 4-week history of nausea and vomiting, a … ut also from the nasogastric fluid specimen. These findings confirmed the diagnosis of disseminated strongyloidiasis. On hospital day 35, the patient was doing poorly and was started on thiabendazole (1250 mg twice daily for 28 days). Nine days later, ivermectin (4.5 mg once daily for 3 days for 2 courses) was also added. He continued to clinically deteriorate. Th …

We present the case of a 70-year old Patient with diffuse abdominal pain, severe eosinophilia, and increased liver parameters hospitalized for further evaluation. An idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome was postulated and the patient was treated with highdose methylprednisolone with rapid normalisation of the eosinophil numbers and decrease of the liver parameters. Later on strongyloidosis could be diagnosed (positive ELISA Test) as the cause of eosinophilia, and the patient was successfully treated with mebendazole. Blood eosionophilia most commonly reflects an allergic, infectious or neopla

We report the case of an HIV infected patient with Streptococcus bovis bacteraemia and meningitis associated with gastrointestinal Strongyloides stercoralis infection. To our knowledge, this has been reported once previously and serves as a reminder to actively exclude asymptomatic S stercoralis infection in HIV infected individuals presenting with bacteraemia.

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome due to the acceleration of the autoinfective cycle of the nematode is a life-threatening form of the infection occurring in immunocompromised hosts. Intestinal ileus, which is commonly encountered in this form, may reduce the bioavailability and thus the efficacy of oral anthelminthic drugs used in the treatment of the S. stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome. We report the efficacy and safety of subcutaneous administration of ivermectin in a patient infected with human T cell lymphotropic virus type I with S. stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Disseminated strongyloides is a rarely reported phenomenon and occurs in immunosuppressed patients with chronic Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Typically, patients present with pulmonary symptoms but subsequently acquire Gram-negative sepsis. Several cases have been noted in Minnesota, and their presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and clinical outcomes were reviewed.
DESIGN: A retrospective chart review was conducted of complicated strongyloides infections from 1993 to 2002 in Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN. Cases were identified by reviewing hospital microbiology databa

A 40-year-old woman presented with prolonged abdominal complaints, weight loss and iron deficiency anaemia. Coloscopic biopsy revealed a nematode infestation, probably by Strongyloides stercoralis.

The types of gastrointestinal parasites (Eimeria and helminths) encountered by 70 lambs and the seasonal pattern of both Eimeria and strongylate infections in these lambs in the derived Coastal Savanna were followed for three years. Eimeria oocysts and helminth eggs were detected in the faeces of lambs at the same time, indicating the concurrence of both Eimeria and helminth infections. Eimeria oocysts were first seen in the lambs 20 days after birth (DAB) and the level of oocyst output increased by the fourth week. Eimeria species identified in the lambs were E. parva, E. pallida, E. faurei,

As a more detailed continuation of a previous study, faecal samples for worm egg counts were collected per rectum from ten marked adult animals in selected flocks of goats, in each of six villages evenly spread out in the communal farming district of Okakarara in eastern Namibia. The study was conducted on a monthly basis from August 1999 to July 2000. Average faecal worm egg counts (FECs) were highest during the warm-wet season, much lower during the cold-dry months and moderate during the hot-dry season. Least square means of FECs were 2140, 430 and 653 per gram of faeces for the three seaso

A 63-year-old Taiwan aboriginal male was admitted with exertional dyspnea, appetite loss and general fatigue. Echocardiography revealed moderate pericardial effusion and histological examination of the pericardiocentesis sample revealed an eosinophil-dominated bloody exudate. The larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis were detected in the pericardial specimen. After treatment with anti-nematodal agents, the eosinophilia decreased from 26% to 1% and the patient's symptoms improved. This is a rare case of Strongyloides-induced bloody pericardial effusion in a non-immunosuppressed patient.

The protective capacity of the cotton rat, Sigmodon hispidus, against the migratory and intestinal phases of Strongyloides venezuelensis infection was examined. After subcutaneous infection with infective larvae (L(3)), adult worm recovery rates from male and female animals on Day 71 were only 0.10% and 0.06% of initial dose, respectively. To determine whether this enhanced protection was expressed during the migratory phase or the intestinal phase, larval recovery from the lungs of cotton rat was evaluated 3 days after subcutaneous L(3) infection. The larval recovery rate was only 0.5% of ini

Strongyloides stercoralis infection was hardly seen in Spain until a few years ago but has recently been shown to be fairly common in some geographic areas. In the respiratory tract this germ can cause acute bronchospasms that make diagnosis difficult, particularly in patients with underlying bronchial disease. To determine if curing S. stercoralis infection is accompanied by clinical and functional improvement in patients with bronchial obstruction, we studied the evolution of 22 infected patients: 11 with no bronchopulmonary disease and 11 with chronic airway obstruction or asthma. The follo

Inadequate therapeutic response to parenteral corticosteroids in patients with acute bronchial asthma is infrequent. We report four patients whose bronchial asthma symptoms worsened after treatment with parenteral corticosteroids. All had larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis in the stool. The new attack or the exacerbation of asthma appeared to be precipitated by systemic corticosteroid administration. The paradoxic therapeutic response of asthma to glucocorticoides was the major pulmonary manifestation of Strongyloides superinfection; there was no evidence of other organ involvement. Individua
