Summary of best evidence for enhanced recovery after surgery for perioperative management of pediatric cleft lip and palate surgery: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Children with cleft lip and palate face more complex stressful situations in the perioperative period due to their underdeveloped systems and relatively weaker resistance to various injurious stimuli. The concept of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) offers a novel perspective on the perioperative management of pediatric patients with cleft lip and palate. This narrative review aimed to search, evaluate, and summarize the best evidence for ERAS in children with cleft lip and palate, and provide reference for clinical perioperative nursing practice. METHODS: We se

Effects of Shenqi compound on intestinal microbial metabolites in patients with type 2 diabetes: A protocol for systematic review and meta analysis.

IntroductionAccording to the data from the 2017 Chinese Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes [Chin J Diabetes. 2017;20:81-117], in 2013, the incidence of T2DM in China was 10.4%, while nearly 63% of the patients did not receive standard diagnosis. T2DM has become a serious public health problem in China and even in the world. Intestinal flora, as a research hotspot related to T2DM and other diseases in recent years, is a kind of microorganism with a large number in the human intestinal tract, which is considered as one of the important factors affecting the metabolism

Cross-national disparities in end-of-life outcomes and care strategies for Parkinson's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of China and the United States.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson’s disease (PD) represents a growing global health challenge, with prevalence doubling from 2.5 million cases in 1990 to 6.1 million in 2016, and projections suggesting it will exceed 12 million by 2040. This exponential growth has been termed the “Parkinson’s pandemic.” China and the United States, which together account for nearly half of the global PD population, have developed markedly different approaches to end-of-life (EOL) care, shaped by their distinct healthcare systems and cultural contexts. Understanding these differences is crucial for developing effective glo

National and subnational prevalence and burden of glaucoma in China: A systematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness, affects approximately 64.3 million individuals worldwide. In China, demographic ageing is in rapid progress. Yet detailed and up-to-date estimates of the scale of glaucoma are rare. We aimed to quantify and understand the prevalence and burden of glaucoma in China from 1990 to 2015, with projections until 2050. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, Chinese Biomedicine Literature Database (CBM-SinoMed), PubMed, Embase and Medline using comprehensive

Streptococcus pneumoniae: Pathogenesis, virulence factors, antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, and therapeutic strategies.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic bacterium and a leading cause of community-acquired pneumonia, meningitis, bacteremia, and otitis media, responsible for an estimated 1.6 million deaths annually. Despite widespread polysaccharide and conjugate vaccine programs and decades of antibiotic therapy, pneumococcal disease continues to pose major public health challenges. These challenges are increasingly understood to reflect the organism's sophisticated capacity for adaptive recombination, allowing it to exploit every selective pressure applied through v

National, regional, and provincial prevalence of glaucoma in China in 2020: an updated systematic review and modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, with a significant disease burden in China. Accurate prevalence estimates are crucial for guiding public health strategies, but large-scale epidemiological investigations remain challenging due to the need for comprehensive ophthalmic assessments. Through a systematic review and modelling approach, we aimed to estimate the national, regional, and provincial prevalence of glaucoma in China in 2020. METHODS: We performed an updated systematic literature search of the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang,

Chemoprophylaxis trial designs in epidemics: insights from a systematic review of COVID-19 study registrations.

BACKGROUND: Chemoprophylactics against emerging epidemic and pandemic infectious diseases offer potential for prevention but require efficacy and safety analysis before widespread use can be recommended. Chemoprophylaxis with repurposed drugs enables deployment ahead of development of novel vaccines. It may have particular utility as a stopgap ahead of vaccine deployment or when vaccines become less effective on virus variants, in countries where there may be structural inaccessibility to vaccines or in specific risk-groups. Rapid implementation of robust trial designs is a persistent challeng

[Irreversible azo covalent organic framework for adsorption of 2,5-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone from water].

The disinfection of water is a fundamental and indispensable process in modern public health infrastructure. It plays a pivotal role in safeguarding drinking water safety by inactivating pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses, thereby preventing waterborne disease outbreaks. However, a significant and well-documented drawback of chemical disinfection, particularly with chlorine-based agents, is the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). These DBPs are generated through complex reactions between disinfectants and natural organic matter present in source water. Among the va…

Cumulative live birth rates in women with endometriosis undergoing ART treatment.

STUDY QUESTION: How do cumulative live birth rates (CLBRs) in women with endometriosis compare to those with other infertility diagnoses undergoing ART? SUMMARY ANSWER: Women with endometriosis as the sole cause of infertility achieved higher CLBRs compared to those with additional infertility diagnoses (endometriosis-plus) or other non-endometriosis causes of infertility. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Endometriosis affects approximately 10% of women of reproductive age and is a major cause of infertility, with many women resorting to ART treatments in the hope of achieving a pregnancy. However, th

Periodontal therapy for primary or secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease in people with periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: There may be an association between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, the evidence so far has been uncertain about whether periodontal therapy can help prevent CVD in people diagnosed with chronic periodontitis. This is the second update of a review originally published in 2014, and first updated in 2017. Although there is a new multidimensional staging and grading system for periodontitis, we have retained the label 'chronic periodontitis' in this version of the review since available studies are based on the previous classification system. OBJECTIVES: To i

Efficacy of drugs against clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis viverrini, and Opisthorchis felineus are the three most important human liver fluke species in the Opisthorchiidae family, infecting approximately 25 million people worldwide. Drug treatment is needed to control morbidity and is also useful in lowering transmission. Several drugs used in various regimens are available to treat these infections, but their comparative efficacy is uncertain. We aimed to compare the efficacy in terms of cure rate and egg reduction rate of currently registered drugs against human liver fluke infection. METHODS: We cond

Effectiveness of community-based management models in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common fatal disease with high morbidity, disability, and economic burden, and it poses a major challenge to global public health. The limitations of the traditional hospital-based management models and the lack of continuous professional guidance and support for people with COPD after discharge have led to repeated acute exacerbations of the disease and high rates of rehospitalization. Community-based management models have received attention because of their convenience, affordability, and accessibility; however, their effectivene

New spatial records of vascular plants in the Azores Archipelago: the PRIBES project and the Azorean Biodiversity Portal (ABP) initiatives - I. São Jorge Island (Azores).

BACKGROUND: The Azores Archipelago is known for its important natural heritage, yet its ecosystems face a "green tsunami" in the form of numerous exotic and invasive species. This influx has wrought serious biodiversity loss and degradation of ecosystem services, representing one of the greatest threats to conservation across the islands. Originating from accelerated global trade and travel, these invasions impact human activities, public health and economic sectors alike. The PRIBES project intends to contribute to "The Regional Strategy for the Management of Terrestrial and Freshwater Exotic

Zoonotic leishmaniasis in China: Current status and challenges to elimination.

UNLABELLED: Leishmaniasis is expanding worldwide along with sand fly vectors. In China, particular challenges arise from its broad climatic and ecological gradients, the diversity of phlebotomine sand fly species, and numerous potential mammalian and reptilian hosts. Two ecological types of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) are recognized: anthroponotic VL (AVL) caused by Leishmania donovani and zoonotic VL (ZVL) caused by Leishmania infantum, which is subdivided into mountain-type (MT-ZVL) where dogs are the main reservoir, and desert-type (DT-ZVL) with uncertain reservoirs.
