Following small-diameter vascular grafting, blood vessels fail to retain excellent antithrombotic function and therefore require application … t carotid artery model, the tubular grafts withstood normal blood pressure, mechanical beating, and pulsatile flow. After 3 weeks, the tubular grafts remained patent and recipient cell infiltration and cell attachment were observed on the luminal surface. These results indicate that HHP-decellularized aortic sheets may be useful as an antithrombogenic material f …

Decellularized organs are now established as promising scaffolds for whole-organ regeneration. For this work to reach therapeutic practice, techniques and apparatus are necessary for doing human-scale clinically applicable organ cultures. We have designed and constructed a bioreactor system capable of accommodating whole human or porcine lungs, and we describe in this study relevant technical details, means of assembly and operation, and validation. The reactor has an artificial diaphragm that mimics the conditions found in the chest cavity in vivo, driving hydraulically regulated negative pre

Few cases of trigeminal neuralgia (TGN) induced by brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) have previously been reported. The present case report described one case of TGN caused by bAVMs in a 32-year-old male patient who suffered from recurrent pain in his right cheek for a period of two years, for whom the seizure frequency and duration of pain increased for 6 months. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed, which demonstrated flow-void signals in the abnormal vessels in the right cerebellopontine angle. Subsequent digital subtraction angiography confirmed the diagnosis of bAVMs, and show

Pulsatile blood flow is studied in a three-dimensional model of human thoracic aorta at different stages of atherosclerotic lesion growth, taking into account the effect of atherosclerotic plaque location and peripheral symmetry. The model is reconstructed from the computed tomography images. The wall shear stress (WSS), time-averaged WSS, and the oscillatory shear index are applied to determine susceptible sites for the onset of early atherosclerosis. Then, two different degrees of stenosis severity, 50 and 80 %, are introduced to vulnerable areas of the healthy aorta geometry. The overriding

It has been reported that pulsations in abnormal vessels are observed on indocyanine green (ICG) angiography in half of patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), although the mechanism of the pulsation is unknown. In this study, we report a case of PCV showing venous pulsations at an arterio-venous (A-V) crossing, and discuss a possible mechanism of polypoidal vessel formation and pulsations in PCV. A 66-year-old female presented with a reddish-orange elevated lesion and serous retinal detachment in the macula of her left eye, and was diagnosed as PCV. She was treated with photody

Orthostatic hypertension-a condition characterized by a hyperactive pressor response to orthostatic stress-is an emerging risk factor for cardiovascular disease and is associated with hypertensive target-organ damage (resulting in silent cerebrovascular disease, left ventricular hypertrophy, carotid atherosclerosis and/or chronic kidney disease) and cardiovascular events (such as coronary artery disease and lacunar stroke). The condition is also considered to be a form of prehypertension as it precedes hypertension in young, normotensive adults. Orthostatic blood pressure changes can be assess

BACKGROUND: Coronary tortuosity (CT) is a common coronary angiographic finding. Whether CT leads to an apparent reduction in coronary pressure distal to the tortuous segment of the coronary artery is still unknown. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of CT on coronary pressure distribution by numerical simulation.
METHODS: 21 idealized models were created to investigate the influence of coronary tortuosity angle (CTA) and coronary tortuosity number (CTN) on coronary pressure distribution. A 2D incompressible Newtonian flow was assumed and the computational simulation was perf

This review summarizes new developments in revascularization and advanced techniques to treat lesions below the knee (BTK). The primary goal of endovascular therapy is the re-establishment of pulsatile, straight-line flow to the foot. This treatment results in relieving ischemic pain, healing of (neuro)ischemic ulcers, preventing limb loss, improving quality of life and potentially prolong survival. Balloon angioplasty is the currently established therapy, bare-metal stents are reserved for failed percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA). Novel devices such as laser, excisional and rotation

Ultrafiltration is effective in the treatment of fluid and sodium overload in congestive heart failure. There is no available device to provide this therapy to ambulatory patients. We built and tested in vivo a wearable belt that can provide continuous ultrafiltration, 168 hours a week. Nine pigs underwent ureteral ligation and subsequently were allowed fluids ad lib, producing fluid overload. Next day, ultrafiltration was performed for 8 hours. The device consists of a hollow-fiber filter, a 9 V battery-operated pulsatile blood pump, a micro pump for heparin infusion, and another micro pump t

To optimize the safety of endovascular treatment and to prevent embolic complications, Théron's technique of carotid stenting under balloon protection was applied successfully to 31 patients with high grade extracranial carotid stenoses. Dilatation of the stenosis and stent deployment are performed under temporary balloon occlusion of the distal internal carotid artery. Blood flow is restored after aspiration as well as flushing of potential emboli from the external carotid territory. Initially a hand-mounted non-steerable protection balloon catheter caused technical difficulties in the passag

An increased rate of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality has been documented in subjects with tachycardia. Hypertensive subjects with tachycardia often also exhibit overweight, higher haematocrit, plasma insulin, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels whereas high density lipoprotein (HDL) is decreased. Sympathetic overactivity seems to be responsible both for the increase in heart rate and blood pressure (BP), and for metabolic abnormalities. Excessive stimulation of beta-adrenergic receptors in the skeletal muscles can cause insulin resistance and chronic beta-adrenergic stimulation which l

BACKGROUND: The current approach to predict preeclampsia combines maternal risk factors and evidence from biophysical markers (mean arterial pressure, Doppler velocimetry of the uterine arteries) and maternal blood proteins (placental growth factor, soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1, pregnancy-associated plasma protein A). Such models require the transformation of biomarker data into multiples of the mean values by using population- and site-specific models. Previous studies have focused on a narrow window in gestation and have not included the maternal blood concentration

OBJECTIVE: It's proposed that oligohydramnios is caused by decreased renal perfusion due to redistribution of fetal blood at fetal growth restriction. Isolated oligohydramnios refers to the presence of oligohydramnios without fetal structural and chromosomal abnormalities, without fetal growth restriction, without intrauterine infection, and in the absence of known maternal disease. It's unknown whether the redistribution or decreased renal perfusion cause isolated oligohydramnios. The aim of the study was to evaluate fetal renal artery Doppler blood velocimetry and cerebro-placental ratio (CP

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the fetal cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) in women presenting with reduced fetal movements (RFM).
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of data collected over an 8-year period at a fetal medicine unit at a tertiary referral center. The cohort comprised 4500 singleton pregnancies presenting with RFM at or after 36 weeks' gestation and 1527 control pregnancies at a similar gestational age without RFM. Fetal biometry and Doppler parameters were recorded and converted into centiles and multiples of the median (MoM). CPR was defined as the ratio between the fetal mi

The aim of this study was to investigate whether brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) is associated with the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) assessed by coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), and to evaluate baPWV as a predictor of obstructive CAD on CCTA. A total of 470 patients who underwent both baPWV and CCTA were included. We evaluated stenosis degree and plaque characteristics on CCTA. To estimate the severity of CAD, we calculated the number of segment with plaque (segment involvement score; SIS), stenosis degree-weighted plaque score (segment stenosis score; S

BACKGROUND: Despite routine ultrasound mapping of upper extremity arteries and veins, early thrombosis and nonmaturation remain frequent complications following vascular access (VA) surgery. Besides vascular diameters, brachial artery stiffness is assumed to play an important role; however, reproducibility of measurements has never been established. The purpose of this study was to determine within-session and between-session variabilities of pulse wave velocity (PWV) assessment by using ultrasonography and blood pressure registration.
METHODS: Beat-to-beat changes in brachial artery diameter

Carotid stenosis is a frequent coexisting condition in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The impact of carotid stenosis on cerebral perfusion is not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of carotid stenosis on cerebral blood flow velocity in patients undergoing CABG. Seventy-three patients undergoing CABG were prospectively recruited and underwent preoperative Duplex carotid ultrasound to evaluate the degree of carotid stenosis. Intraoperatively, transcranial Doppler ultrasound was used to record the mean flow velocity (MFV) with
