A goat herd follow-up and an ecopathological survey on respiratory diseases were undertaken in Chad. Late puberty and high mortality were highlighted by the follow-up. Diseases were frequent and depended on the season. Few risk factors of respiratory diseases were shown by the ecopathological survey. Mortality was connected with 3 parasitic and infectious factors. Decreasing the age at puberty and the mortality rate are priorities. Measures to achieve these aims are well known. They must be set up within a development program, in interaction with research, for a good use by the goat farmer.

Immunological memory generated by infection with S. ratti was studied separately in the migratory and intestinal phases in mice. Protection against reinfection in the migratory phase was 96-98% at 2 weeks but significantly decreased to 60% at 12 weeks after the primary infection. However, protection in the intestinal phase was 96% even 12 weeks after the primary infection. Recall of immunity against the intestinal phase persists for longer than that against the migratory phase in mice.

Strongyloides stercoralis infections frequently present with eosinophilia and abdominal pain. Since the gastrointestinal symptoms are non-specific, only 15 percent of these patients are correctly considered to have an infectious enteritis or intestinal parasite. In fact, the initial diagnosis is peptic ulcer disease in most patients. The clinical course may be indolent, or patients may develop a sudden catastrophic illness, particularly following the administration of corticosteroids.

A clinical trial concerning the efficacy of albendazole has been performed in an area outside the endemic zone. Sixty-eight patients were treated with albendazole in doses varying from 4-30 mg/kg/day for 3-6 days. A high cure rate of 86 per cent was obtained with albendazole 16 mg/kg/day for three days and repeated once after a fortnight. The albendazole was well tolerated and no side effects were imputed to the treatment. Successful treatment was confirmed by seven negative, consecutive coprocultures. The follow up period ranged from 35 to 615 days.

Immunogenicity of adult Strongyloides ratti was studied in rats. Immunization of rats by intraduodenal implantation of adult worms could completely inhibit the egg production and hasten the expulsion of challenged worms which were developed from subcutaneously inoculated L3 or were implanted intraduodenally as adults. Albendazole was given to some men for the first time. 131 patients (43 children) received different dosages, without clinical intolerance. Biological parameters were normal. Each study was made in two parts: - determination of the good dosage, - administration in a double-blind study (except for Strongyloides Stercoralis). Albendazole has a good efficiency against Enterobius Vermicularis, Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides and Necator americanus. Strongyloides Stercoralis seems to be killed by this drug, but complementary studies will be necessary.

The joint manifestations of parasitic diseases are rare. They may be due to the presence of a parasite within one or severed joints, to involvement of a neighbouring joint, or distant involvement due to an immuno-allergic mechanism. The latter category constitutes what one may call parasitic rheumatism. The latter is characterised by arthropathies of inflammatory type with raised sedimentation rate, marked but inconstant hypereosinophilia, and total inefficacy of antirheumatic treatments. It has been claimed that parasitic infestation suppresses the development of asthma. Eight Tanzanian schoolchildren in whom asthma was confirmed by the demonstration of exercise-induced bronchospasm were found in an ascaris-endemic area of rural Tanzania. Faecal parasites were found equally commonly in the children with asthma and the ninety-seven non-asthmatic controls. The prevalence of asthma (3.3%) in the school under study was comparable with that found in developed countries.
