Hearing loss of acquired syphilis: diagnosis confirmed by incudectomy.

Syphilis, both congenital and acquired, may cause sensori-neural hearing loss. Congenital syphilis presents in two forms: early (infantile), and late (tardive). Acquired syphilis, both secondary and tertiary, may cause deafness. The clinical course of the acquired and congenital forms are similar. Sensori-neural hearing loss with low discrimination scores may affect both ears simultaneously or sequentially, and vestibular complaints are common. A clinical diagnosis can be made on the basis of history, the presence of other stigmata of syphilis, and serological tests, including the FTA-ABS. The

Subjective visual vertical and visual dependency in patients with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Spatial orientation is an inherent ability governed by the complex integration of visual, vestibular and proprioceptive inputs. The degree to which an individual relies upon visual cues, as opposed to the vestibular or proprioceptive cues, is termed visual dependence. Although abnormal visual dependence has been documented in other neurological disorders, it is not known whether MS leads to visual dependence, and if so whether this is related to disease progression, clinical disability, or neuro-inflammatory burden in the central nervous system. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate SVV and visu

Balance Disorders in Young and Middle-Aged Adults: NHANES, 2001-2004 and 2021-2023.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of balance disorders in young and middle-aged adults, examine associations with risk factors, and changes over the past 20 years. METHODS: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is a cross-sectional complex random sample of the civilian, non-institutionalized United States population. In 2001-2004 and 2021-2023, NHANES included questions about balance, dizziness, and falls in the past 12 months. The modified Romberg test (MRT) was used to examine vestibular balance function. Logistic regression models were used to assess risk facto

Vestibulo-sympathetic interaction and otolith function in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The association between blood pressure variability (BPV) or heart rate variability (HRV) and the baroreflex is well established. However, the role of the vestibular-autonomic reflex in regulating BP and HR stability has primarily been explored only in experimental studies. We aimed to delineate the association of BPV and HRV with otolith function in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from consecutive patients with POTS recruited between April 2021 and April 2025 at a tertiary referral-based hospital in South Ko

Aberrant dynamic functional network connectivity in vestibular migraine patients without peripheral vestibular lesion.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate changes in dynamic functional network connectivity (FNC) in patients with vestibular migraine (VM) and explore their relationship with clinical manifestations. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data were scanned from 35 VM patients without peripheral vestibular lesion and 40 age-, sex- and education-matched healthy controls (HC). Independent component analysis (ICA), sliding window (SW) and k-means clustering analysis were performed to explore the difference in FNC and temporal characteristics between two groups. Ad

Immediate effects of ischemic compression on neck function in patients with cervicogenic cephalic syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Cervicogenic cephalic syndrome (CCS), a group of diseases, consists of cervicogenic headache and dizziness. These symptoms may cause loss of physical function compared with other headache and dizziness disorders. The purpose of this case-control study was to assess the clinical effects of ischemic compression (IC) in patients with CCS. METHODS: Twenty-seven subjects with chronic neck pain (persisting for >3 months) and 26 healthy volunteers were examined. Subjects with organic lesion of the ear, nose, throat, eye, or central nervous system were excluded. The CCS group received IC o

Steady-state stiffness of utricular hair cells depends on macular location and hair bundle structure.

Spatial and temporal properties of head movement are encoded by vestibular hair cells in the inner ear. One of the most striking features of these receptors is the orderly structural variation in their mechanoreceptive hair bundles, but the functional significance of this diversity is poorly understood. We tested the hypothesis that hair bundle structure is a significant contributor to hair bundle mechanics by comparing structure and steady-state stiffness of 73 hair bundles at varying locations on the utricular macula. Our first major finding is that stiffness of utricular hair bundles varies

Anti-VEGF treatment improves neurological function and augments radiation response in NF2 schwannoma model.

Hearing loss is the main limitation of radiation therapy for vestibular schwannoma (VS), and identifying treatment options that minimize hearing loss are urgently needed. Treatment with bevacizumab is associated with tumor control and hearing improvement in neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) patients; however, its effect is not durable and its mechanism of action on nerve function is unknown. We modeled the effect anti-VEGF therapy on neurological function in the sciatic nerve model and found that it improves neurological function by alleviating tumor edema, which may further improve results by de

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in chronic otitis media before and after surgery.

CONCLUSION: The pathology of chronic otitis media (COM) could delay and reduce the energy transfer of sound to the inner ear. The significant improvement of postoperative vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) response rate and p13 latencies in the group of patients with no or negative postoperative ABG gain provided evidence that the sound energy inducing a VEMP might be different from the energy producing the auditory perception. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the VEMP in patients with COM before and after surgery. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-four subjects with unilateral COM were enrolled.

Truncating Variants in RFC1 in Cerebellar Ataxia, Neuropathy, and Vestibular Areflexia Syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease characterized by adult-onset and slowly progressive sensory neuropathy, cerebellar dysfunction, and vestibular impairment. In most cases, the disease is caused by biallelic (AAGGG)n repeat expansions in the second intron of the replication factor complex subunit 1 (RFC1). However, a small number of cases with typical CANVAS do not carry the common biallelic repeat expansion. The objective of this study was to expand the genotypic spectrum of CA

Inner ear insult suppresses the respiratory response to carbon dioxide.

Compensated respiratory acidosis has been observed in a significant number of patients with active vestibular disease. We therefore hypothesized that the inner ear may play an unrecognized integral role in respiratory control. To test this premise, we investigated whether mice with induced inner ear injury demonstrated any alteration in their respiratory response to inhaled carbon dioxide (CO(2)). Experimental mice and control mice were included in two separate experiments. Intra-tympanic gentamycin injections were administered to induce inner ear damage in experimental animals. Hearing loss a

Characteristics of hearing loss in patients with herpes zoster oticus.

Patients with herpes zoster oticus (HZO) may commonly show symptoms associated with 7th and 8th cranial nerve (CN VII and CN VIII) dysfunction. The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of hearing loss in patients with HZO and discuss possible mechanisms.Ninety-five HZO patients who showed at least one of the symptoms of CN VII and CN VIII dysfunction between January 2007 and October 2014 were included in this study. Hearing loss was defined when the mean thresholds of pure tone audiometry (PTA) in speech frequency (0.5 kHz + 1 kHz + 2 kHz/3) or isolated high frequency (4 kHz

A new neurogenic vestibular evoked potential (N6) recorded with the use of air-conducted sound.

INTRODUCTION: Neurogenic vestibular evoked potentials that are recorded from the scalp have so far been recorded in the form of N3 (click air-conducted), N5 (tone air-conducted), and P10 (bone-conducted stimulus) waveforms. The purpose of this study is to find other vestibular waveforms obtained with air-conducted sound. METHODS: The experiments were organized into 4 parts: 1) topographic scalp mapping; 2) determining the consistency in appearance of candidate vestibular waveforms; 3) further characteristics such as their relationship to vestibular evoked myogenic potentials, sensitivity to 5

Postural control in otolith disorders.

It was the aim of the present paper to investigate the influence of otolith disorders on human postural control by different methods. The 33 patients of our study had undergone a minor head injury and suffered subsequently from an utricular or sacculo-utricular disorder as evidenced by vestibular evoked myogenic potential recordings and eccentric rotation recordings of the otolith-ocular responses. Postural control was assessed by performing stance/gait tests (standard balance deficit test, SBDT) and by evaluating trunk sway (using angular velocity sensors). Moreover, classical tests of the po

[Noninvasive evaluation of intracochlear pressure. II. Study findings in patients with Meniere's disease, fluctuating deep tone hearing and peripheral vestibular vertigo].

The tympanic membrane displacement technique (TMD) is aimed at evaluating intracochlear and intracranial pressure changes non-invasively. Therefore, the present paper describes the findings in patients with Ménière's disease where an increase in volume of the endolymphatic spaces is discussed. It should be investigated to which extent a change in the intracochlear pressure corresponds to different stages of the disease. It could be described that the intracochlear pressure does change over a certain period of persisting Ménière's, but that there is no extensive increase in intracochlear pressu

Lateralization, impedance, auditory brain stem response and synthetic sentence audiometry in brain stem disorders.

Applied individually, the conventional audiometric tests are unsatisfactory in the diagnosis of retrocochlear disorders. An accurate identification of a retrocochlear lesion, however, is not always possible using a single test, and only an appropriate test battery provides the basis for correct prediction of a retrocochlear lesion. Because of this observation, lateralization tests, impedance studies, auditory brain stem responses and speech audiometry with synthetic sentences have been applied to patients affected with retrocochlear disorders (acute nucleoreticular vestibular syndrome, multipl
