Characterization of an 18,000-molecular-weight outer membrane protein of Haemophilus ducreyi that contains a conserved surface-exposed epitope.

Identification of antigenically conserved surface components of Haemophilus ducreyi may facilitate the development of reagents to diagnose and prevent chancroid. A hybridoma derived from a mouse immunized with nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae produced a monoclonal antibody (MAb), designated 3B9, that bound to 35 of 35 H. ducreyi strains isolated from diverse geographic regions. The MAb 3B9 bound to a non-heat-modifiable H. ducreyi outer membrane protein (OMP) whose apparent molecular weight was 18,000 (the 18K OMP), and the 3B9 epitope did not phase vary at a rate of greater than 10(-3) in H

Comparison of Keratoconus Progression Rate between Adolescents Aged 19-24 Years and Young Adults: Impact on Indication for Crosslinking.

PURPOSE: To investigate the keratoconus characteristics and progression rate in a patient group of adolescents aged 19-24 years and to compare the results with young adults aged 25-30 years. METHODS: A total of 158 keratoconic eyes (82 and 76 eyes in the adolescent and young adult groups) of the Homburg Keratoconus Center, which were examined by Scheimpflug tomography at least two times, were included in this retrospective study. The visual characteristics, corneal tomography, and biomechanical measurements were noted at the initial visit, 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months after the initial

Inflammation Targeting-Triggered Healing Hydrogel for In Situ Reconstruction of Colonic Mucosa.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by intestinal mucosal damage that exacerbates inflammation and promotes disease recurrence. Although hydrogel-based therapies have shown potential for mucosal repair, challenges remain due to inadequate targeting and low hydrogel density, leading to ongoing infiltration of harmful substances and delayed mucosal healing. In this study, an inflammation-targeting-triggered healing hydrogel (ITTH hydrogel) is developed, composed of polyvinyl alcohol-alginate microgels (PALMs) and a cyclodextrin polymer crosslinker (CPC). This hydrogel specifically

Early findings in a randomised controlled trial on crosslinking protocols using isoosmolar and hypoosmolar riboflavin for the treatment of progressive keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To present baseline characteristics and to present the perioperative corneal thickness during corneal crosslinking (CXL) treatment for progressive keratoconus and to describe how the addition of sterile water (SW) efficaciously can maintain the corneal thickness. The treatment efficacy will be evaluated when the 1-year follow-up is complete. METHODS: A randomised clinical study using epithelium-off CXL with continuous UVA irradiation (9 mW/cm2) and two kinds of riboflavin solutions: (i) isoosmolar dextran-based riboflavin (n = 27) and (ii) hypoosmolar dextran-free riboflavin (n = 27)

Comparative Efficacy and Safety of Standard Versus Accelerated Corneal Crosslinking for Keratoconus: 1-Year Outcomes From the Save Sight Keratoconus Registry Study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of standard [Ultraviolet (UV) light power: 3 mW/cm2, duration: 30 minutes] versus accelerated (UV power: 9 mW/cm2, duration: 10 minutes) corneal crosslinking (CXL) for stabilizing keratoconus. METHODS: A total of 684 eyes (555 patients; mean age ± SD, 25.0 ± 7.9 years; women, 30.6%) from 24 international sites with epithelium-off CXL for keratoconus had follow-up data at 1-year and met the inclusion criteria. Evaluation of novel rapid detection kits for dengue virus NS1 antigen in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2017.

BACKGROUND: Dengue virus (DENV) infection is one of the biggest challenges for human health in the world. In addition, a secondary DENV infection sometimes causes dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), which frequently leads to death. For this reason, accurate diagnosis record management is useful for prediction of DHF. Therefore, the demand for DENV rapid diagnosis tests (RDTs) is increasing because these tests are easy and rapid to use. However, commercially available RDTs often show low sensitivity for DENV and cross-reactivity against other flaviviruses, especially Zika virus (ZIKV). METHODS: We

A New Matrix Therapy Agent for Faster Corneal Healing and Less Ocular Discomfort Following Epi-off Accelerated Corneal Cross-linking in Progressive Keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To investigate the hypothesis that a new matrix therapy agent (ReGeneraTing Agent, [RGTA]) would speed up the corneal reepithelialization, improve stromal healing, and reduce ocular symptoms after epi-off corneal cross-linking (CXL). METHODS: Sixty eyes of 60 patients with progressive keratoconus were enrolled in the study. Epi-off accelerated CXL was performed in all patients. Sixty eyes were randomized into two groups according to use of RGTA eye drops prior to contact lens fitting at the end. Identical medical agents were started postoperatively for the two groups. Comparative evaluation of progression rate in keratoconus before and after collagen crosslinking.

PURPOSE: To compare the rate of disease progression in keratoconus before and after corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL). METHODS: 145 eyes were followed without CXL (no-CXL group) for a median duration of 31 months whereas 45 eyes were followed up for 41 months before (pre-CXL) and after (post-CXL) accelerated, epithelium-off crosslinking. Progression was defined based on significant slope found in linear mixed effect models against time. Persistent Epithelial Defects and Corneal Opacity After Collagen Cross-Linking With Substitution of Dextran (T-500) With Dextran Sulfate in Compounded Topical Riboflavin.

PURPOSE: Collagen cross-linking (CXL) is a commonly performed procedure to prevent the progression of keratoconus. Riboflavin is an essential part of the procedure, which facilitates both the cross-linking process and protection of intraocular structures. Dextran can be added to riboflavin to create an isotonic solution. This case report highlights the importance of compounding riboflavin with the correct dextran solution. METHODS: A retrospective case series. RESULTS: Six eyes of 4 male patients with keratoconus aged from 20 to 38 years underwent CXL with substitution of 20% dextran (T-500)
