Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a One Health challenge driven by microbial exchange among humans, animals and the environment. Zoological institutions offer useful settings for environmental AMR surveillance. This single-zoo cross-sectional study examined the occurrence, antimicrobial susceptibility and genomic characteristics of nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica (NTS) and clinically relevant Enterococcus spp. in faecal samples from 101 clinically healthy captive ungulates representing seven conservation-priority species at a major urban zoo in the United Arab Emirates. NTS was detected in 4/

INTRODUCTION: Risk of transmission of carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPO) from duodenoscopes has been widely described and is now considered a well-known threat. Data on infection rates are limited to case series and confined to the setting of infection outbreaks. To date, data on universal screening for multidrug-resistant microorganisms of patients referring to the Endoscopy service are extremely scant.
AIM: to evaluate the overall incidence of CPO colonization after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
METHODS: All consecutive patients undergoing ERCP at our Service

The rising prevalence and rapid spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria have resulted in ineffective treatments, impacting millions of lives globally. In response to these challenges, drug repurposing has garnered attention as a viable alternative to traditional drug discovery and development processes. This study aimed to investigate the synergistic effects of dimetridazole and cefotaxime by evaluating their efficacy against E. coli. A checkerboard assay was performed to examine the synergy of dimetridazole in combination with cefotaxime against drug-resistant E. coli NX400. The results showed

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a public health issue attributed to the misuse of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine. Since AMR surveillance requires a One Health approach, we sampled nine interconnected compartments at a hydrological open-air lab (HOAL) in Austria to obtain six bacterial species included in the WHO priority list of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB). Whole genome sequencing-based typing included core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST). Genetic and phenotypic characterization of AMR was performed for all isolates. Eighty-nine clinically-relevant bacteria w

Bacteriophages are generally specific, and a cocktail of phages is needed to combat different bacterial targets. Their production usually requires pathogenic isolation hosts. We identified a novel strain, Escherichia coli ST155, that could serve as a production host for three different polyvalent phages (ϕPh_SE03, ϕPh_SD01, and ϕPh_EC01), thus superseding the use of individual isolation hosts. Upon propagation in E. coli ST155, the phages demonstrated differential intergeneric infectivity against Salmonella enterica, E. coli OP50, Shigella dysenteriae, E. coli MDR, and Acinetobacter baumannii.

A shared characteristic of many tumors is the lack of response to anticancer drugs. Multiple mechanisms of pharmacoresistance (MPRs) are involved in permitting cancer cells to overcome the effect of these agents. Pharmacoresistance can be primary (intrinsic) or secondary (acquired), i.e., triggered or enhanced in response to the treatment. Moreover, MPRs usually result in the lack of sensitivity to several agents, which accounts for diverse multidrug-resistant (MDR) phenotypes. MPRs are based on the dynamic expression of more than one hundred genes, constituting the so-called resistome. Altern

Background/Objectives: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered alternatives to classical antibiotics due to limited resistance development in bacteria. However, bacteria can develop resistance to AMPs through evolutionary adaptation, including oligosaccharide modifications and multidrug efflux pumps. Further research is needed to elucidate the defense mechanisms employed against AMPs to address the emerging resistance problem. Pexiganan is a cationic peptide with effective broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. The aim of this study is to elucidate the genomic and transcriptomic basis of

Enterobacterial infections being severe, with a high mortality rate, particularly affecting ICU patients, and 80% newborns. These infections have multifactorial multi-drug resistance (MDR) mechanisms, which frequently causes current antibiotic therapies to fail, mortality rate remains high, and creating an urgent need for alternative multi-targeted therapies, such as plant-derived compounds to restore clinical effectiveness. This study aims to discover novel anti enteric compounds in Hydrocotyle javanica Thunb. (H. javanica) belongs to Apiaceae family and understanding their interaction mechan

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) and multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains worldwide has limited the ability of antimicrobial therapy to treat severe bacterial infections. The emergence and rapid global dissemination of carbapenemase-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) strains occluded the therapeutic use of carbapenems, the last resort of β-lactams. In Saudi Arabia, major outbreaks of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae have been reported, with approximately a 90% prevalence rate of CRKP strains. In this study, we aimed to delineate the prevalence and res

Growing resistance to carbapenem antibiotics is a major public health problem as these antibiotics are considered the last line of therapy for infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria. The rapid emergence and dissemination of carbapenem-resistant bacterial strains are mainly due to horizontal gene transfer (HGT) within or between bacterial cells via the mobilome. The aim of this article is to discuss the role of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) that capture and disseminate resistance determinants of carbapenem antibiotics, as a comprehensive review integrating the co

Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is an important nosocomial pathogen responsible for a wide range of human infections. The emergence of multidrug resistance (MDR) causes life-threatening nosocomial infections. Also, the formation of biofilm helps it survive on abiotic surfaces and is transferred through healthcare workers, thereby causing nosocomial infections. Hence, we study the current antibiotic resistance patterns and virulence factors in our clinical and colonizing isolates. A total of 92 isolates (44 colonizing and 48 clinical) of A. baumannii were included in the study. Antibioti
