[Parasitic calcifications: elements for diagnostic (author's transl)].

Among the radiologic calcifications, those of parasitic etiology are rather commonly found. They are heterotopic dystrophic calcifications, their late apparition in the evolution of the parasitic disease is not subordinate to any metabolic dysfunction. The authors describe the morphologic and the topographic criteria of different parasitic calcifications except the fungic ones and protozoaire. Moreover they state for each parasite some epidemiological, biological and clinical facts which can be helpful for the diagnosis.

[Chemotherapeutic effects of nitro compounds. 1. Nitroanilines].

More than 200 nitro compounds, most of them nitroaniline derivatives substituted with one or more radicals having a basic reaction, were prepared and investigated as to their therapeutic activity against bacteria, fungi, protozoa, helminths, viruses and tumors. Several mono-nitrobenzenes with a radical having a basic reaction showed weak in-vitro activity against gram-positive bacteria and against Crocker's sarcoma 180; they also showed systemic activity against nematodes (Aspiculuris tetraptera) and viruses. The majority of therapeutically active compounds with pronounced in-vivo activity aga

Efficacy of two rounds of albendazole treatment on soil-transmitted helminths in schoolchildren, Yunnan Province, China.

Mass drug administration (MDA) of albendazole to at-risk populations remains the primary strategy for controlling soil-transmitted helminths (STH). Despite its widely use, its efficacy varies among different STH species and remains sub-optimal, particularly in the treatment of T. trichiura. Currently, studies investigating the optimal dose and regimens for albendazole are lacking. A longitudinal cohort study was conducted to assess the efficacy of two single-dose albendazole 400 mg treatments given four weeks apart targeting STH infections compared with just one single-dose albendazole 400 mg

Endemicity and environmental reservoirs of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections in Ghanaian rural communities.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections remain major neglected tropical diseases in low- and middle-income countries despite ongoing preventive chemotherapy programmes. This study assessed the prevalence, associated risk factors, and household environmental contamination related to schistosomiasis and STH infections among children in Banda District, Ghana. METHODOLOGY: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in four endemic communities in the Banda District, Ghana, from February to April 2025. Pre-school and school-aged children (2-15 years) we

Prevalence and risk factors of soil transmitted helminths among vegetable farmers of Akaki river bank, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, 79 million people live in soil transmitted helminths endemic areas. The Ethiopia established a National goal to eradicate STH transmission by 2025. To meet that goal, it is imperative that data is acquired on community helminth infection risk. This study examined the prevalence of STH and risk factors for infection in vegetable farmers working on Akaki River Bank, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between November 7, 2022, and June 2023. A stratified random sampling was used to select farming households. Two hundred and sixteen farm

Impact of helminth infections during pregnancy on maternal and newborn Vitamin D and on birth outcomes.

Poor birth outcomes in low- and middle income countries are associated with maternal vitamin D deficiency and chronic helminth infections. Here, we investigated whether maternal Schistosoma haematobium affects maternal or cord vitamin D status as well as birth outcomes. In a prospective cross-sectional study of pregnant women conducted in Lambaréné, Gabon, we diagnosed maternal parasitic infections in blood, urine and stool. At delivery we measured vitamin D in maternal and cord blood. S. haematobium, soil-transmitted helminths, and microfilariae were found at prevalences of 30.2%, 13.0%, and

Assessing the knowledge, training and capacity of health workers in the diagnosis and management of soil-transmitted helminths and schistosomiasis in eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect millions of people in Africa, with Uganda bearing a significant burden. The World Health Organization (WHO) set a goal to reduce NTDs and improve access to diagnosis and management by 2030. However, NTDs have not been well integrated into primary healthcare in many countries, including Uganda, due to limited knowledge and resources among health workers. The study aimed to assess the readiness and capacity of primary healthcare centres to diagnose and manage soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and schistosomiasis. METHODS: A cross-sectional q

Infections with Soil-Transmitted Helminths in BaAka Pygmies Inhabiting the Rain Forests in the Central African Republic.

Poor sanitation, improper food handling, limited access to safe drinking water sources, and limited access to healthcare services contribute to a high prevalence of infections caused by soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) among the BaAka Pygmies, an indigenous community living in Central Africa. The aim of this study was to determine the rates of STH infections in the BaAka people inhabiting the rain forests of the south-western parts of the Central African Republic (CAR) as well as to examine the validity of biannual deworming with a single dose of albendazole 400 mg in high-risk communities ex
