Use of insecticides to control screw-worm fly strike by Chrysomya bezziana in cattle.

Some insecticides to control and prevent screw-worm fly strike by Chrysomya bezziana in calves and adult cattle were tested in field trials on cattle in Sabah, East Malaysia. Ivermectin injected subcutaneously in newborn calves at 200 mu/kg provided 10 days protection from screw-worm fly strike, which allowed navels to dry. Ivermectin, 1% dichlofenthion plus gentian violet and 3% lindane plus pine oil smear were all effective in preventing re-strike of treated wounds in adult cattle. A single subcutaneous injection of ivermectin at 200 mu/kg was effective, whereas it was necessary to re-apply

Looking for the right mate-What we really know on the courtship and mating of Lucilia sericata (Meigen)?

Lucilia sericata is well known for causing myiasis in humans, livestock, pets and wildlife. It also vectors microbial pathogens, including paratuberculosis agents. This species can be exploited in maggot therapy to treat necrotic wounds, particularly those infected by multidrug-resistant pathogens. Despite its high medical and veterinary importance, our knowledge about its courtship and mating behavior is still limited. In this study, we quantified the courtship and mating behavior of L. sericata, shedding light on the potential impact of lateralization of selected behavioral traits during sex

An artificial diet for rearing Cochliomyia macellaria (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Larvae of the secondary screwworm, Cochliomyia macellaria (F.), feed on carrion and may sometimes cause animal myiasis. They have been reared in the laboratory on various animal tissues to study their growth and development because of their importance in forensic science. We use secondary screwworms in our laboratory for preliminary experiments as a model for the primary screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), which has been eradicated from the United States. C. macellaria larvae reared on animal tissues produced a putrid odor, an unfavorable condition in the laboratory, and variable pu

Studies on the embryonic development and larval infection potential of the stomach bot flies, Gasterophilus pecorum.

Endangered Przewalski's horses have faced severe infections from Gasterophilus pecorum (Diptera, Gastrophilidae) in Xinjiang's Kalamaili Nature Reserve (KNR). This study examines G. pecorum's development and infection patterns in embryonic and larval stages, crucial for understanding horse botfly disease in desert grasslands. For the incubation of G. pecorum fertilized eggs, we established the six distinct temperature gradients: 16 °C, 20 °C, 24 °C, 28 °C, 30 °C, and 32 °C. Using the least squares method, we calculated the correlation between the developmental threshold temperature of the eggs

A systematic review and an individual patient data meta-analysis of ivermectin use in children weighing less than fifteen kilograms: Is it time to reconsider the current contraindication?

BACKGROUND: Oral ivermectin is a safe broad spectrum anthelminthic used for treating several neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Currently, ivermectin use is contraindicated in children weighing less than 15 kg, restricting access to this drug for the treatment of NTDs. Here we provide an updated systematic review of the literature and we conducted an individual-level patient data (IPD) meta-analysis describing the safety of ivermectin in children weighing less than 15 kg. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A systematic review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Revi

Daily and seasonal variation of muscid flies (Diptera: Muscidae) in Chiang Mai province, northern Thailand.

Flies of the family Muscidae, or muscids, are of medical and veterinary importance worldwide due to their recognition as nuisance pests and myiasis-producing agents. Effective control of muscids requires biological information on population dynamics daily and across seasons. In this study, such patterns were investigated in three different microhabitats (e.g., forest area, palm plantation and longan orchard) in a suburban area of Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand. Adult fly samplings were conducted for 24-h intervals using semiautomatic traps and 1-day old beef offal as bait. Samplings we

Impact of Botfly Parasitism on the Behavior of Mantled Howler Monkeys.

Parasitism, a widespread nutrient acquisition strategy among animals, results from a long evolutionary history where one species derives its metabolic needs from another. Parasites can significantly reduce host fitness, affecting reproduction, growth, and survivability. Vertebrate hosts exhibit defensive strategies against parasites, including "sickness behaviors" such as lethargy and self-grooming to remove ectoparasites. In addition, social animals may engage in "helping sick animals" behaviors, such as social grooming, to aid parasitized group members. Mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palli

The effect of repeated physical disturbance on soft tissue decomposition--are taphonomic studies an accurate reflection of decomposition?

Although the relationship between decomposition and postmortem interval has been well studied, almost no studies examined the potential effects of physical disturbance occurring as a result of data collection procedures. This study compares physically disturbed rabbit carcasses with a series of undisturbed carcasses to assess the presence and magnitude of any effects resulting from repetitive disturbance. Decomposition was scored using visual assessment of soft tissue changes, and numerical data such as weight loss and carcass temperature were recorded. The effects of disturbance over time on

In vitro rearing Oestrus caucasicus third-instar larvae and pupae (Diptera: Oestridae) from naturally-infested Iberian ibex, Capra Pyrenaica (Artiodactyla: Bovidae).

Third-instar Oestrus caucasicus larvae (n = 236) obtained from Iberian ibex, Copra pyrenaica, were reared in a laboratory to obtain adult flies. They were maintained at a temperature of 21.9 +/- 2.7 degrees C and a relative humidity of 38.9 +/- 8.0 %. In all, 78 imagos emerged (33.1 %), with a sex-ratio at emergence not differing significantly from 1:1; 25 larvae did not complete pupariation. A total of 14 adult flies (17.9 % of the adults obtained) showed malformations, mainly in their wings. The pupariation period lasted around 30 hours and the pupal stage lasted on average 29.8 +/- 6.8 days

Ophthalmomyiasis interna posterior and pigmentary retinopathy of Guam.

BACKGROUND: Ophthalmomyiasis is ocular invasion by a fly larva. In the United States, only two cases of bilateral subretinal ophthalmomyiasis have been reported in the literature. Subretinal invasion by the fly larva results in characteristic ophthalmoscopic and angiographic findings. Recently, similar subretinal changes have been associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/Parkinsonism dementia complex (ALS-PDC) in the Chamorro population of Guam. This pigmentary retinopathy of Guam (PROG) is generally bilateral in presentation, whereas ophthalmomyiasis is generally unilateral. While PROG h

[Mast cells and eosinophils of the respiratory mucosa of sheep with Oestrus ovis (Linné, 1761) infection].

Mast cells and eosinophils have been identified by differential stainings and counted in mucous membrane of nasal septum, turbinates and sinus of 77 ewes naturally infected with Oestrus ovis. Results have been compared with those of nine parasite free lambs. Anova tests indicate significant differences between infected and parasite-free sheep for the cell numbers and their distribution among the septum, the turbinates and the sinus and according to their position in mucous membrane, interglandular chorion of sub-mucosa. In infected sheep, the mean number of mast cells is twice the number prese
