Two split-brained subjects, one (L.B.) with full forebrain commissurotomy and one (R.B.) with callosal agenesis, and a group of twenty neurologically intact subjects were tested in three discrimination tasks: a go-no go task, a two-choice task, and a three-choice task. The discriminations were based on colour in Experiment 1, and on shape in Experiment 2. The stimuli were presented in one or other visual field, and the subjects responded with the fingers of one or other hand, allowing the differences in reaction time between crossed and uncrossed responses (CUD) to be calculated. For the norma

Young, middle-aged, and old beagle dogs were tested on several visual-discrimination tasks: reward- and object-approach learning, object discrimination and reversal, long-term retention of a reversal problem, and a size-discrimination task. Beta-amyloid accumulation in the entorhinal, prefrontal, parietal, and occipital cortices was quantified using immunohistochemical and imaging techniques at the conclusion of cognitive testing. Middle-aged and old dogs were impaired in size-discrimination learning. In each task, a subset of aged dogs was impaired relative to age-matched peers. Beta-amyloid

To examine possible influences of premorbid and comorbid factors on the neuropsychological test performance of recently abstinent (3-5 weeks) drug abusers, we studied 24 alcoholics, 23 cocaine abusers, and 22 healthy controls of comparable age and education. Both alcoholics and cocaine abusers performed significantly more poorly than controls on most measures of learning and memory, problem solving and abstraction and perceptual-motor speed, but the groups did not differ on the measure of sustained attention. Correlational analyses revealed no significant relationships between measures of chil

The central executive component (CE) of Baddeley's working memory model (Baddeley, 1992) was evaluated in 26 asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus-infected individuals (HIV+) and 23 HIV-control subjects using a dual-task working memory paradigm. The HIV+ and HIV- groups showed an equivalent reduction in performance on both the primary task (visual vigilance) and the secondary task (letter span) when they were performed concurrently relative to when either task was performed alone. This result suggested normal CE functioning in these HIV+ subjects. In contrast, the HIV+ subjects had signifi

No differences were seen in performance on either verbosequential or visuospatial neuropsychological tests among three groups of women. There were also no differences among the phases of the menstrual cycle on any of the tests. The design of this study was to sample performance of women on verbosequential and visuospatial neuropsychological tests during phases of the normal menstrual cycle in regularly menstruating women, and at comparable time points among women taking oral contraceptives and among those who had amenorrhea. Serum luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), e

Exclusion performances in matching to sample are demonstrated when subjects select experimentally undefined comparison stimuli in the presence of undefined sample stimuli, apparently by rejecting defined comparison stimuli. Several studies have documented exclusion performances in a small number of individuals with severe mental retardation. These studies also demonstrated the potential of exclusion procedures for establishing prerequisites for emergent naming performances. The present study examined exclusion in a larger cohort of subjects. Initial experiments asked two questions. First, how

Four patients with face agnosia, a condition in which there is a failure to recognize previously known faces or faces that ought to have been learned without difficulty, were studied with an experimental paradigm in which both overt (verbal self-report) and covert (electrodermal skin conductance response) probes of recognition were used. The results showed a striking dissociation between the two indices: (1) all 4 patients generated more frequent and significantly larger-amplitude skin conductance responses to familiar faces, as compared to unfamiliar ones. This outcome contrasts with the find

Using a novel, fMRI-based inter-subject functional correlation (ISFC) approach, which isolates stimulus-locked inter-regional correlation patterns, we compared the cortical topology of the neural circuit for face processing in participants with an impairment in face recognition, congenital prosopagnosia (CP), and matched controls. Whereas the anterior temporal lobe served as the major network hub for face processing in controls, this was not the case for the CPs. Instead, this group evinced hyper-connectivity in posterior regions of the visual cortex, mostly associated with the lateral occipit

Differences in electroencephalographic (EEG) power spectra obtained under similar, but not identical, conditions may be difficult to discern using standard techniques. Statistical analysis may not be useful because of the large number of comparisons necessary. Visual recognition of differences also may be difficult. A new technique, neural network analysis, has been used successfully in other problems of pattern recognition and classification. We examined a number of methods of classifying similar EEG data: standard statistical analysis (analysis of variance), visual recognition, discriminant

A mechanism shared by most neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), is neuroinflammation. It has been shown to have a link between cognitive impairment and retinal function under neuroinflammatory conditions, confirming the essential role of the retina as a window to the brain. Here, we characterize a mouse model of LPS-induced neuroinflammation describing the parallel deterioration of both memory and visual function. Then, we demonstrate, using the Novel Object Recognition test (NOR) and electroretinogram (ERG) recordings, that preventive, chroni

Visual field abnormality is an important diagnostic sign in glaucoma. Therefore, the presence or absence of visual field loss most often strongly influences diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in glaucoma management. Interpretation of visual field results is often difficult, however. Physiological variability of perimetric sensitivity values contributes to these difficulties. It has been our aim to develop improved computer-assisted methods for the recognition of early glaucomatous field loss. Our approach has therefore been to design techniques that are highly sensitive to small but signific

BACKGROUND: This manuscript reflects on the role of visual art as a gentle and meaningful pathway for supporting the cognitive development of children on the autism spectrum. Rather than approaching autism through deficit based assumptions, it foregrounds the potential of visual engagement as a supportive mode of learning.
PURPOSE: The manuscript aims to explore how images, patterns, shapes, and repeated visual interaction may create conditions for focus, memory, recognition, and understanding among autistic children.
APPROACH: Through poetic reflection, the manuscript presents visual therap

Posterior fusiform gyrus (BA 37) is responsible for Hanja (ideogram) alexia in stroke patients. Patients with semantic dementia (SD) have lesions in the basal temporal area. The close proximity in these two lesions and the fact that reading ideograms requires holistic processing as is necessary in recognition of objects, suggests a possibility that ideogram alexia/agraphia may occur in patients with SD. We established and carried out Hanja and Hangul (phonogram) reading/writing tasks on six SD patients and nine Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients as control to see if these two patient groups sho

Multimodal emotion recognition in conversations aims to identify the emotion expressed in each utterance by jointly analyzing textual, acoustic, visual, and contextual information. However, existing methods still face challenges in coordinating intra-modal dependency modeling, cross-modal interaction, and graph-based conversational reasoning. To address these challenges, this paper proposes MTG-ERC, a multimodal conversational emotion recognition framework that integrates transformer-based attention mechanisms with directed relational graph learning. First, textual, acoustic, and visual featur

Although normal-hearing (NH) and cochlear implant (CI) listeners are able to adapt to spectrally shifted speech to some degree, auditory training has been shown to provide more complete and/or accelerated adaptation. However, it is unclear whether listeners use auditory and visual feedback to improve discrimination of speech stimuli, or to learn the identity of speech stimuli. The present study investigated the effects of training with lexical and nonlexical labels on NH listeners' perceptual adaptation to spectrally degraded and spectrally shifted vowels. Continuous sensing of group feeding demand is needed to support feeding decisions on large-scale pig farms. In dense group-housing environments, crowding, occlusion, and variation in posture around the trough can reduce the stability of visual feeding-status recognition. Feeding schedules also commonly rely on fixed periods or historical patterns, limiting their ability to assess whether daily feeding-behavior signals are aligned with group demand. Here, we propose a video-based workflow for sensing group feeding activity and conducting an offline replay evaluation of feeding-schedule allocati

While a large amount of research has studied the facilitation of visual speech on auditory speech recognition, few have investigated the processing of visual speech gestures in motor-oriented tasks that focus on the spatial and motor features of the articulator actions instead of the phonetic features of auditory and visual speech. The current study examined the engagement of spatial and phonetic processing of visual speech in a motor-oriented speech imitation task. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to measure the haemodynamic activities related to spatial processing and a

Individuals with schizophrenia are impaired in processing social signals such as facial expressions of emotion. Perceiving facial expressions is a complex process that depends on a distributed neural network of regions involved in affective, cognitive, and visual processing. We examined repetition priming, a non-conscious form of perceptual learning, to explore the visual-perceptual processes associated with perceiving facial expression in people with schizophrenia. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was also employed to probe the sensitivity of face-responsive regions in the ventral

An extraordinary variety of experimental (e.g., flicker, magnetic fields) and clinical (epilepsy, migraine) conditions give rise to a surprisingly common set of elementary hallucinations, including spots, geometric patterns, and jagged lines, some of which also have color, depth, motion, and texture. Many of these simple hallucinations fall into a small number of perceptual geometries-the Klüver forms-that (via a nonlinear mapping from retina to cortex) correspond to even simpler sets of oriented stripes of cortical activity (and their superpositions). Other simple hallucinations (phosphenes a

AIM: Neuroimaging studies on biological motion have established the view that the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) is involved in detecting intention of others. Those studies have consistently reported other regions such as body-selective extrastriate body area (EBA) and motion-sensitive middle temporal, in close proximity to pSTS. Whether EBA responds only to static body parts or has a more extended role as part of a system for inferring intention of others has remained an elusive issue. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of EBA in processing goal-directed actio
