Longitudinal investigation of the relationship between family history of psychosis and affective disorders and Child Behavior Checklist ratings in clinical high-risk adolescents.

This is the first study to investigate whether positive family history (FH) of psychosis and affective disorders moderates the relationship between child diagnostic status and parent-reported social and behavioral problems on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) in clinical high-risk adolescents. This longitudinal investigation assessed 122 participants (mean age=14.25±1.8years) from three groups (at-risk, other personality disorders, non-psychiatric controls) at baseline and one year follow-up. As predicted, there was a main effect of FH for a number of CBCL scales indicating higher scores for

Pediatric feeding disorders.

Pediatric feeding disorders are common: 25% of children are reported to present with some form of feeding disorder. This number increases to 80% in developmentally delayed children. Consequences of feeding disorders can be severe, including growth failure, susceptibility to chronic illness, and even death. Feeding disorders occur in children who are healthy, who have gastrointestinal disorders, and in those with special needs. Most feeding disorders have underlying organic causes. However, overwhelming evidence indicates that abnormal feeding patterns are not solely due to organic impairment.

The Role of Executive Functions in the Development of Empathy and Its Association with Externalizing Behaviors in Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Other Psychiatric Comorbidities.

Executive functions have been previously shown to correlate with empathic attitudes and prosocial behaviors. People with higher levels of executive functions, as a whole, may better regulate their emotions and reduce perceived distress during the empathetic processes. Our goal was to explore the relationship between empathy and executive functioning in a sample of children and adolescents diagnosed with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder alone or associated with comorbid Disruptive Behavior Disorders and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder. We also aimed to examine the role of empathic dimen

Coffee and energy drink use patterns in college freshmen: associations with adverse health behaviors and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Public health concern over college students mixing caffeine-containing energy drinks (EDs) and alcohol has contributed to an array of ED-focused research studies. One review found consistent associations between ED use and heavy/problem drinking as well as other drug use and risky behaviors (Nutr Rev 72:87-97, 2014). The extent to which similar patterns exist for other sources of caffeine is not known. The present study examined associations between coffee and ED consumption and alcohol, tobacco and other drug use; alcohol use problems; and parental substance abuse and mental healt

An item response theory analysis of the Problem Gambling Severity Index.

Increases in the availability of gambling heighten the need for a short screening measure of problem gambling. The Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) is a brief measure that allows for the assessment of characteristics of gambling behavior and severity and its consequences. The authors evaluate the psychometric properties of the PGSI using item response theory methods in a representative sample of the urban adult population in South Africa (N = 3,000). The PGSI items were evaluated for differential item functioning (DIF) due to language translation. DIF was not detected. The PGSI was found

[Alcohol and women: clinical aspects].

Alcohol-related pathologies lead to most serious expressions, both at clinical and social level. The diffused social acceptance of consumption and abuse behavior and the lack of alcohol education for professionals (physicians, psychologists, social workers etc.) make difficult to put in the right frame this issue. Just a multidimensional approach can make the problem understandable. The history of alcohol consumption during the time gives us an exhaustive picture of the negative consequences of alcohol consumption. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is a problem still underestimated and repr

Psychological expectancy as mediator of vulnerability to alcoholism.

Alcohol expectancy has proven to be a powerful predictor of drinking behavior, including alcoholism, in a wide range of groups. Three recent studies that begin to address expectancy's relation to other alcoholism vulnerability factors are reviewed. Results indicate that: (1) expectancies for reinforcement from alcohol predate teens' first drinking experiences; (2) expectancies predict subsequent drinking onset and problem drinking; (3) high initial expectancies lead to a vicious cycle of progressively more drinking and more positive expectancies during the adolescent years; (4) expectancy medi

AIDS prevention and chemical dependence treatment needs of women and their children.

Female partners of male drug users may not recognize that they are endangered by sexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, even when women acknowledge this problem, there are multiple subsequent impediments to behavior change. Chemically dependent women also have specific additional needs. Most chemical dependence outreach and treatment programs are not yet designed to address the issues of contraception, pregnancy, motherhood, child rearing, and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. Chemically dependent women may not only give birth to drug-affected infants bu

[Pseudotumorous choroid granuloma in miliary tuberculosis].

Recently, tuberculosis re-emerged as a serious public health problem, in industrialized countries, while remaining it remains a major cause of mortality and morbidity in third world countries. Intraocular localization is rare. The most common manifestation of ocular tuberculosis in patients with miliary is Bouchut tubercules. An atypical feature of ocular tuberculosis is discussed: a pseudotumoral choroid granuloma. The behavior of the lesion and its response to antituberculous therapy was documented clinically by fundus photography on fluorescein angiography.

Formulation-based treatment of a complex phobia.

This case study describes the treatment of a 22-year-old woman presenting with a complex balloon phobia. She was first treated by the empirically proven method of in vivo exposure and then by a course of behavior therapy based upon the case formulation. Although the exposure resulted in some decrease in phobic symptoms, the formulation-based treatment produced significantly greater clinical improvement in the phobia and also impacted other problem areas. Three-year follow-up data are provided.

Reporting challenging behaviour in nursing home residents with dementia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Challenging behaviour (CB) occurs frequently in nursing home residents with dementia. Up to now, little attention has been given to how to document CB in nurses' daily progress reports in a standardised way. The aim of the study was to gain deeper insight into the factors influencing nursing staff members in their reporting CB. METHODS: We conducted fourteen semi-structured interviews in Dutch nursing homes with nursing staff members (EQF level 2-6) working in (highly specialised) geriatric units. Participant used a standardised method for reporting in the Electronic Patie

Interprofessional Education in Neurology Intensive Care Unit: Learning Activity for Students Completing Clerkships and Field Experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Teaching learners the benefits and challenges of interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) in acute care is best done in the context of authentic patient care rather than classroom settings. Yet differing clinical schedules of students and faculty as well as structured, controlled environments of intensive care units are not conducive to bringing multiple interprofessional learners to the bedside. METHODS: We developed a 2.5-hour interprofessional education (IPE) activity based around neurology intensive care unit patients that was implemented using team-based learning (TB

Longitudinal patterns of childhood homelessness and early adolescent trajectories of internalising and externalising behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Child homelessness has been associated with elevated mental health problems during early adolescence, a period of onset for psychiatric problems. Prior literature has relied on cross-sectional studies, limiting the understanding of temporality and trajectories of psychopathology. We extend prior literature by examining associations between child homelessness and internalising and externalising symptom trajectories in early adolescence, with consideration of timing and persistence of homelessness. METHODS: Using population-based longitudinal data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of

Problem gambling and family violence: Findings from a population-representative study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Few studies have investigated the association between problem gambling (PG) and violence extending into the family beyond intimate partners. This study aimed to explore the association between PG and family violence (FV) in a population-representative sample. It was hypothesized that: (a) PG would be positively associated with FV, even after adjusting for sociodemographic variables and comorbidities and (b) these relationships would be significantly exacerbated by substance use and psychological distress. A secondary aim was to explore whether gender moderated these relati

iSupport, an online training and support program for caregivers of people with dementia: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial in India.

BACKGROUND: Dementia has a huge physical, psychological, social and economic impact upon caregivers, families and societies at large. There has been a growing impetus to utilize Internet interventions given the potential scalability, and presumed cost-effectiveness and accessibility. In this paper, we describe the design of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) aiming to study the impact of online self-help programs on caregivers of people with dementia in India. The experimental group will receive an interactive training and support program and the comparison group will receive an education-onl

Influence of the organizational environment on challenging behaviour in people with intellectual disabilities: Professionals' views.

BACKGROUND: We examined the influence of the organizational environment on challenging behaviour in people with intellectual disabilities to increase understanding of the quality of support services for people with intellectual disabilities. METHOD: Twenty-one professionals and managers from four specialized Dutch disability service organizations were interviewed. Data were analysed with a grounded theory approach, using Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory as a sensitizing frame. RESULTS: The organizational environment (i.e., vision, values, sufficient resources) is related via the support se

Problem solving, impulse control and planning in patients with early- and late-stage Huntington's disease.

Sub-domains of executive functions, including problems with planning, accuracy, impulsivity, and inhibition, are core features of Huntington's disease. It is known that the decline of cognitive function in Huntington's disease is related to the anatomical progression of pathology in the basal ganglia. However, it remains to be determined whether the severity of executive dysfunction depends on the stage of the disease. To examine the severity of sub-domains of executive dysfunction in early- and late-stage Huntington's disease, we studied performance in the Tower of London task of two groups o

Preschool externalizing behavior predicts gender-specific variation in adolescent neural structure.

Dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus is believed to underlie the development of much psychopathology. However, to date only limited longitudinal data relate early behavior with neural structure later in life. Our objective was to examine the relationship of early life externalizing behavior with adolescent brain structure. We report here the first longitudinal study linking externalizing behavior during preschool to brain structure during adolescence. We examined the relationship of preschool externalizing behavior with amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex vo
