Airway disease: anatomopathologic patterns and functional correlations.

Airways represent a serial and parallel branched system, through which the alveoli are connected with the external air. They participate in the mechanical and immune defense against noxious agents, regional flow regulation to optimize the perfusion/ventilation ratio and provide lung mechanical support. Functional exploration of central airways is based on resistance measurement, flow-volume curve or spirometry, while peripheral airways influence parameters as the upstream resistance, the slope of phase III nitrogen washout and the residual volume. Bronchodynamic tests supply important informat

[Respiratory impairment and metal exposure in a group of 68 industrial welders].

A group of 68 currently employed welders were examined who were exposed to welding fumes either for the whole or for at least half the working day and who used at least two welding processes, which were mainly manual metal arc welding and metal active gas welding, but also metal and tungsten inert gas welding, or oxyacetylene welding. The welders were classified into 3 groups according to the class of materials used, i.e.: 1) only mild and stainless steel; 2) mild and stainless steel and other metals; 3) only other metals. Chronic bronchitis symptoms were observed in 22% of the subjects; signs

The human alveolar macrophage: isolation, cultivation in vitro, and studies of morphologic and functional characteristics.

Human alveolar macrophages were lavaged from surgically resected lungs and from lungs of normal subjects. Macrophages that had been purified by glass adherence were maintained in tissue culture for as long as 54 days. After 3-4 wk in vitro they underwent transformation into multinucleated giant cells. These aged cells had more than 30 times the phagocytic capacity that the same group of cells had had after 1 day in vitro. Phagocytosis of heat-killed Candida albicans was inhibited by iodoacetate, sodium fluoride, potassium cyanide, and low partial pressures of oxygen, suggesting that these cell

Doxycycline in respiratory tract infections. A review of a multi-centre trial.

A total of 256 patients were admitted in Germany into a Pan-European multi centre trial of doxycycline in the treatment of infections of the respiratory tract. The diagnoses showed a preponderance of lower respiratory tract infections compared with other European countries, due largely to the fact that the participating physicians were pulmonary or internal medicine specialists. Doxycycline was given in a dose of 200 mg initially followed by 100 mg daily for 5-10 days (only the occasional patient varied from this regimen). Side-effects were uncommon (2.5-3.5%) and affected only the gastrointes

[State of broncho-pulmonary system in liquidators of Chernobyl power accident consequences].

Liquidators of Chernobyl power accident consiquences were subjected to simultaneous external gamma-beta radiation and inhalation of particles containing radionuclides aerosols, nonradiation toxic chemicals and dust. Typical defects of medical examination of liquidators were seen: sending people with pulmonary diseases to post-accident work, erroneous interpretation of the disease severity with underestimation of previous occupational history and nonradiation factors deteriorating the case.

Doxycycline and minocycline in the treatment of respiratory infections: a double-blind comparative clinical, microbiological and pharmacokinetic study.

A group of 41 patients, all admitted to hospital because of acute purulent exacerbations of chronic respiratory disease, were treated with either doxycycline or minocycline in a double-blind randomized study. Drug dosage was one 100 mg capsule twice daily for seven days. Bacteriological and clinical assessment before and immediately after treatment showed no significant differences between the doxycycline and the minocycline groups, nor did further evaluation after seven days follow-up. Pharmacokinetic studies showed that the Cmax and 0-11 h AUC values in blood were higher for doxycycline, whe

Comparison of Lower Airway Sampling Strategies in Children with Protracted Bacterial Bronchitis (CLASSIC-PBB): a non-randomised, internally controlled, multicentre trial.

BACKGROUND: Protracted bacterial bronchitis (PBB) is a leading cause of paediatric chronic wet cough. Identifying the causative pathogen promotes antibiotic stewardship, but bronchoalveolar lavage taken during flexible bronchoscopy (FB-BAL) is the only validated sampling strategy. We prospectively investigated if cough swab (CS) or induced sputum (IS) was a viable alternative. METHODS: Children with PBB, referred for FB-BAL, provided a cough swab and induced sputum. Discordance in microbiological yield (failure to identify identical pathogens) between cough swab and BAL, and between induced s

Structural characterization and inhibitory activity against silicosis of a bioactive polysaccharide from Farfarae Flos.

BACKGROUND: Silicosis is a progressive fibrotic lung disease marked by chronic inflammation, fibroblast activation, and excessive extracellular matrix deposition. There is evidence that natural polysaccharides have the potential to attenuate the progression of silicosis. Farfarae Flos (FF), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been widely used to treat cough, asthma, and bronchitis. However, the potential effects of polysaccharides from FF on silicosis remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the anti-silicosis effects and underlying mechanisms of the polysaccharide from FF,

Case Report: A rare case of ANCA-positive Q fever endocarditis-associated glomerulonephritis.

BACKGROUND: Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii and is endemic worldwide. Q fever endocarditis is commonly found in adults and is rarely seen in children. Infectious endocarditis can also lead to renal damage. Here, we present a case of Q fever endocarditis-associated glomerulonephritis in a Chinese boy with positive Antiproteinase 3 antibody (PR3)-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA). CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old Chinese boy presented with intermittent fever and hematuria for 2 months. He was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot at birth and underwent multiple c

Sub-Optimal Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Management in India: Findings from a Community-Based Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Despite the second most common cause of disease burden, there are few studies reporting the prevalence, awareness, and treatment rates of COPD in India. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among people aged ≥40 years residing in rural and urban areas of Sonipat district in North India using a multistage random sampling technique. COPD was defined as self-reported physician diagnosed COPD, emphysema, chronic bronchitis or being on treatment for COPD. Additional cases were detected using a validated sequential screening strategy, ie, administ

In-silico discovery of common molecular signatures for which SARS-CoV-2 infections and lung diseases stimulate each other, and drug repurposing.

COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 is a global health issue. It is yet a severe risk factor to the patients, who are also suffering from one or more chronic diseases including different lung diseases. In this study, we explored common molecular signatures for which SARS-CoV-2 infections and different lung diseases stimulate each other, and associated candidate drug molecules. We identified both SARS-CoV-2 infections and different lung diseases (Asthma, Tuberculosis, Cystic Fibrosis, Pneumonia, Emphysema, Bronchitis, IPF, ILD, and COPD) causing top-ranked 11 shared genes (STAT1, TLR4, CXCL10, CCL2,

Age at death in elderly cohorts of four European countries of the Seven Countries Study: the role of comorbidities.

PURPOSE: To study age at death (AD) in elderly men as a function of risk factors and morbid conditions in a 25-year follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Men enrolled in the Seven Countries Study belonging to 8 cohorts in 4 European countries (Finland, The Netherlands, Italy and Serbia) were examined between 1984 and 1989 (aged 65-84 years) with measurement of some cardiovascular risk factors and recording of a few major morbid conditions. AD was measured after 25-year follow-up and used in multiple linear regression (MLR) models as dependent variable; while, risk factors and morbid conditions ha

Safety and Adverse Events after Targeted Lung Denervation for Symptomatic Moderate to Severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (AIRFLOW). A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

Rationale: Targeted lung denervation (TLD) is a bronchoscopic radiofrequency ablation therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which durably disrupts parasympathetic pulmonary nerves to decrease airway resistance and mucus hypersecretion. Objectives: To determine the safety and impact of TLD on respiratory adverse events. Methods: We conducted a multicenter, randomized, sham bronchoscopy-controlled, double-blind trial in patients with symptomatic (modified Medical Research Council dyspnea scale score, ≥2; or COPD Assessment Test score, ≥10) COPD (FEV1, 30-60% predicted).
