Laser-Assisted Strategies for Alveolar Bone Preservation After Tooth Extraction: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Post-extraction alveolar bone resorption complicates implant planning and compromises functional and aesthetic outcomes. High-power lasers, including surgically applied Er:YAG and Nd:YAG lasers, as well as Nd:YAG-based photobiomodulation (PBM), have been proposed as adjunctive approaches to decontaminate extraction sockets, modulate inflammation, and stimulate osteogenesis, potentially limiting post-extraction ridge collapse. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis included prospective and retrospective clinical studies evaluating changes in alveolar ridge height, width,

Inactivation of deposited bioaerosols on food contact surfaces with UV-C light emitting diode devices.

The airborne transmission of infectious diseases and bioaerosol-induced cross-contamination pose significant challenges in the food, dairy, and pharma industries. This study evaluated the effectiveness of 279 nm UV-C LED irradiation for decontaminating bioaerosols, specifically containing microorganisms such as Escherichia coli (C3040- Kanamycin resistant), Salmonella Enteritidis (ATCC 4931), and Pseudomonas fragi (ATCC 4973), on food contact surfaces. Borosilicate glass, silicon rubber, and stainless steel (316L) surfaces were selected for experimentation for their usage in the food industry.

The management of an oral pyogenic granuloma around osseointegrated dental implants.

INTRODUCTION: Oral pyogenic granulomas (PGs) presenting in association with dental implants are uncommon occurrences. While tooth-associated PGs are well-documented in the literature, there are only seven case reports with biopsy-confirmed diagnoses of PG related to dental implants. This case report details the treatment of an intraoral PG related to dental implants that had been osseointegrated and asymptomatic for 10 years. CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old female presented with a hyperplastic erythematous mass that encompassed the dental implants in the position of the maxillary central inc

High risk of misinterpreting hair analysis results for children tested for methadone.

The major problem after testing the hair of a child for drugs is the interpretation of the findings. In 2016, the laboratory received several hair specimens with the request to verify if there was any evidence of previous methadone exposure by the donor of the sample. Case 1 was a child admitted to the Emergency Unit for intense sedation and breathing difficulties. Cases 2-4 involved children found dead at home. In all cases, methadone and EDDP, its metabolite, were found in blood. After decontamination, the hair was analysed with LC-MS/MS for methadone and EDDP. The LOQ for both drugs was 10p

Postsymptomatic restoration of SMN rescues the disease phenotype in a mouse model of severe spinal muscular atrophy.

Transfusion of blood and blood products has been associated with transmission of infectious agents. However, it is probable that blood products are currently very safe and that pooled virus-inactivated products from remunerated donors are now safer than untreated single voluntary donor components. Although the transmission events of the past and the present are reasonably well understood, reliance on a linear approach to predict safety in the future is open to criticism. Indeed, it was not possible to predict the extent or consequences of the AIDS epidemic or of hepatitis C transmission. Moreo

Neutron-based sterilization of anthrax contamination.

With the anthrax threat becoming a reality, it is very important to have an effective way to sterilize areas contaminated by anthrax. Anthrax spores are the dormant form of the anthrax bacteria. They can germinate in tissues, producing new bacteria that release lethal toxins. Neutrons can be a powerful tool in our defense against anthrax contamination. Neutrons are elementary particles that have no charge, which allows them to be very penetrating, killing the anthrax spores on the surface and inside the containers. So neutrons have an advantage over other forms of radiation if deep penetration

Microbiology and laboratory diagnosis of upper respiratory tract infections.

In the article that follows, Carroll and Reimer address a number of issues related to the clinical and laboratory diagnosis of upper respiratory tract infections. These syndromes occur with great frequency in both adults and children and have tremendous economic impact, related not only to lost productivity in the workplace but also to the frequent prescription by physicians of antibiotics, even when the etiologic agents of infection almost certainly are not bacteria. Most of these infections are diagnosed clinically, and specimens for microbiological identification are not obtained. Indeed, t

Infection and transfusion therapy in acute leukaemia.

Granulocytopenia is the single most important risk factor for infection in patients with acute leukaemia. There are limitations to the effective prophylaxis of infection in granulocytopenic patients, but practical measures include the management of the patient in a private hospital room, the requirement of all medical personnel and visitors to wash their hands carefully and to wear masks, restricting the patient to a low-bacteria diet devoid of fresh fruit, vegetables and salads, and the administration of oral antimicrobial agents for gastrointestinal decontamination. When fever develops, empi

Development of a functional and disinfectable sewage vent high-efficiency particulate air filter system and its validation using vaporized hydrogen peroxide.

Airborne disinfection of high-containment facilities is mandatory for safe operations. However, sewage vent air-particularly in large-animal experimental units-can represent a critical gap and is typically not considered in the design of high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter systems. Here, we present an engineering design enabling HEPA filtration of sewage vent air from primary biological containments, including large-animal facilities and necropsy suites. We additionally evaluated vaporized hydrogen peroxide (vH2O2) fumigation as an airborne disinfection approach. Disinfection efficac

Optimal antibiotic use in the intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic resistance has emerged as one of the most important factors influencing the outcomes of patients with life-threatening infections in the ICU. The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant infections globally highlights the importance of this issue for all intensivists. MAIN BODY: Antibiotic utilization in the ICU should be optimized to ensure that timely appropriate treatment is administered in a way that minimizes the subsequent emergence of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic strategies have been developed to assist clinicians in achieving this important balance. Fa

Oxidation-dependent effects of alpha-1 antitrypsin on wound healing and inflammation.

Wound healing requires a delicate balance between cellular and molecular factors, all affected by reactive oxygen species (ROS). While ROS decontaminate, they also might lead to impaired wound healing, as evident in radiation-exposed skin and in venous insufficiency. Human alpha-1 antitrypsin (hAAT) is a circulating antiprotease that is anti-inflammatory and tissue-protective. Accordingly, tissue repair is enhanced in hAAT-rich conditions. hAAT undergoes oxidative modification in high-ROS environments, which alters its functional properties. While its antiprotease function is lost, the consequ

Application of essential oils as natural antimicrobials in lactic acid bacteria contaminating fermentation for the production of organic cachaça.

Sugarcane-based fermentation is an essential process for different sectors of economic importance, such as the food industry with fermented and distilled beverages. However, this process can suffer from high contamination by wild yeasts and bacteria, especially lactic acid bacteria (LAB). This makes it necessary to use decontamination strategies and search for new methods that have a low environmental impact and contribute to the production of organic products. Among the options, oregano and thyme essential oils stand out for their antibacterial compounds. The aim of this study was to use oreg

Prevalence and detection of drug resistant mutations in Mycobacterium tuberculosis among drug naïve patients in Nairobi, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB), an ancient scourge of humanity known for several thousands of years, is still a significant public health challenge in many countries today even though some progress has been made in recent years in controlling the disease. The study's aim was to determine the prevalence of mutations responsible for drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis among patients visiting selected health centers in Nairobi, Kenya. METHODS: The cross-sectional study involved 132 TB positive patients visiting Mbagathi and Chandaria hospitals between September 2015 and August 2016. Spu

Potato virus Y: Contact Transmission, Stability, Inactivation, and Infection Sources.

In glasshouse experiments, two isolates of Potato virus Y 'O' strain (PVYO) were transmitted from infected to healthy potato plants by direct contact when leaves were rubbed against each other, when cut surfaces of infected tubers were rubbed onto leaves, and to a limited extent, when blades contaminated with infective sap were used to cut healthy potato tubers. However, no tuber-to-tuber transmission occurred when blades were used to cut healthy tubers after cutting infected tubers. When leaf sap from potato plants infected with two PVYO isolates was kept at room temperature, it was highly in

The relationship between inadvertent ingestion and dermal exposure pathways: a new integrated conceptual model and a database of dermal and oral transfer efficiencies.

Occupational inadvertent ingestion exposure is ingestion exposure due to contact between the mouth and contaminated hands or objects. Although individuals are typically oblivious to their exposure by this route, it is a potentially significant source of occupational exposure for some substances. Due to the continual flux of saliva through the oral cavity and the non-specificity of biological monitoring to routes of exposure, direct measurement of exposure by the inadvertent ingestion route is challenging; predictive models may be required to assess exposure. The work described in this manuscri

Standardized emergency management system and response to a smallpox emergency.

The smallpox virus is a high-priority, Category-A agent that poses a global, terrorism security risk because it: (1) easily can be disseminated and transmitted from person to person; (2) results in high mortality rates and has the potential for a major public health impact; (3) might cause public panic and social disruption; and (4) requires special action for public health preparedness. In recognition of this risk, the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (LAC-DHS) developed the Smallpox Preparedness, Response, and Recovery Plan for LAC to prepare for the possibility of an outbrea

Statistical Mechanics-Driven Adhesion of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid (2,4-D) and Carbofuran for Water Disinfection.

To address the issue of wastewater decontamination, this meticulous study leverages the concepts of probabilistic physics formalism to depict the adsorptive equilibrium data of two widely used pesticides: 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and carbofuran on phosphoric acid-activated peach stone biochar. Numerically, we proposed three advanced modelsmonoenergetic linking monolayer scenario, bienergetic linking monolayer scenario, and multilayer linking with saturation scenarioto fit the experimental data. The analysis of data-theory accuracy through χred 2 and R adj 2 reveals that the adh
