Depressive symptom trajectories and risk of CVD among rural older adults in China: a CHARLS-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The association between trajectories of depressive symptoms and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in rural older adults remains insufficiently understood. This study aimed to investigate the impact of depressive symptom trajectories on the incidence of CVD among rural older adults in China. METHODS: Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), including 2,482 rural participants aged 60 years and above without baseline CVD. Depressive symptoms were assessed across five survey waves (2011, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2020) using the 10-item Center

Joint Associations of Cumulative C-Reactive Protein-Triglyceride-Glucose Index and Depression with Cardiovascular Outcomes in Middle-Aged and Older Adults: A National Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The C-reactive protein-triglyceride-glucose index (CTI) and depression are each associated with elevated cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, evidence on long-term cumulative CTI exposure and its joint effect with depression remains limited. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included participants from the 2015 baseline of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, with follow-up in 2018 and 2020. Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine associations between a combined cumulative CTI-depression indicator and incident CVD, as well as their interactio

Social participation of patients with epidermolysis bullosa: barriers and facilitators in education, employment, and economic life - a biographic interview study.

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a rare, inherited skin disorder characterized by skin fragility, leading to painful blisters and wounds. While protective measures are essential for managing EB, they can inadvertently restrict physical activity and social participation. Recognizing this dilemma, the current psychosocial care guidelines for EB emphasize the need to support social participation as a key priority. Accordingly, this study explores barriers and facilitators influencing participation in education, employment, and economic life, as conceptualized by the International Classif

The Impact of Biases for Early-Career Women in Medicine: "It's the Little Day-to-Day Microaggressions".

BACKGROUND: Women physicians face multiple systemic and social biases in the clinical setting that erode mental and physical well-being. Gender-based discrimination was reported by 76% of early-career women physicians, decreasing to 57% for mid-career, and 36% for late-career. While these trends suggest that these biases may diminish with career progression, they remain a persistent burden of women physician's careers. This article offers a unique contribution by centering early-career women family physicians, a group underrepresented in qualitative research on workplace bias. This article foc

A Comprehensive Understanding of Global Female Genital Fistula and Stigma: A Systematic Scoping Review and Meta-Analysis.

Female genital fistula, a debilitating birth injury frequently caused by prolonged obstructed labor or surgery in lower resource settings, leads to stigma and poor health, social, and economic outcomes. Fistula-related stigma evidence is lacking, including the nature, dimensions, sources, and influences on health and well-being. This systematic scoping review aimed to (a) examine fistula-related stigma experiences, (b) assess stigma and discrimination consequences, and (c) compare how stigma, its severity, and related stigma coping and resistance differ across contexts. We searched 10 scientif

"Being Treated Like an Infant Who Doesn't Know Anything" Obstetric Violence From Perspectives of Women, Health Care Providers and Key Community Informants in Central Zone Tanzania: A Qualitative Exploratory Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Violence during pregnancy, childbirth and after childbirth is a critical issue globally. There remains a lack of consensus on operational definitions of the components across different cultures globally since the definitions of respect, disrespect and violence can differ among cultures, traditions and places. Obstetric violence presents a significant barrier to seeking facility-based care during pregnancy and childbirth and instead women may opt for home deliveries with unskilled attendants. As a result, some experience complications thus contributing to the high prevalence of mate

Investigating the contributing factors to HIV/AIDS infection from the perspective of HIV-infected patients.

BACKGROUND: People with HIV have always faced stigma and discrimination. Given the numerous papers that have addressed the psychological and social risk factors in spreading HIV, a pressing question is whether individuals' mere careless and behavioural flaws can still account for the spread of HIV. Barriers and opposing politic made a hard position for HIV and sex education in Iran. METHODS: The present study investigated the causes of contracting HIV/AIDS from the perspective of HIV-infected patients. To accomplish this, 150 patients referring to the voluntary counseling and testing Center,

Social stigma and self-perception in adolescents with tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics, which commonly presents with multiple behavioral problems, including co-morbid attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Both tics and co-morbid conditions have been shown to potentially affect patients' health-related quality of life. While TS typically presents in childhood, its manifestations peak in severity during adolescence, a critical period in which affected individuals are exposed to potential stigma from peers. Physical and behavioral
