PURPOSE: To present a case of traumatic dislocation of an Ophtec Artisan phakic intraocular lens (PIOL) and an analysis of the endothelial cell count.
METHODS: The patient presented with blurred vision in his left eye after sustaining a brow laceration. History included uncomplicated bilateral implantation of an Artisan PIOL to correct myopia.
RESULTS: The brow laceration was sutured and topical dexamethasone 0.1% qid was prescribed. One week after presentation, the PIOL was relocated. Postoperatively, endothelial cell count analysis was performed in both eyes.

Pylephlebitis, or septic thrombophlebitis of the portal vein, is an infrequent but life-threatening complication of abdominal septic events. The authors report the occurrence of pylephlebitis and multiple liver abscesses induced by a neglected intra-gastric migration of an adjustable silicone gastric band. We used roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis to follow 33 C-stem femoral components for two years after primary total hip arthroplasty. All components migrated distally and posteriorly within the cement mantle. Open heart surgery is the standard procedure for closure of ostium secundum atrial septal defects. Recently, percutaneous transcatheter procedures emerged as therapeutic alternatives for closure of both atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale. Unfortunately, however, such percutaneous procedures may require surgical intervention for early or late complications. We report a case with emergent surgery for dislocation of the Amplatzer septal occluder into the aortic arch diagnosed 30 days after percutaneous closure of an atrial septal defect.

It has been known for years that patients with shunted hydrocephalus can develop an isolated fourth ventricle with or without signs of cerebellar dysfunction. It has also been reported about other isolated parts of the ventricular system following treatment of communicating hydrocephalus. We observed three children, two with an isolated fourth ventricle and one with an isolated third ventricle. The clinical appearance, the pathogenesis and treatment will be discussed.
