A hybrid LLM and machine learning framework for early fire detection in subway tunnels.

Fire detection is vital in subway tunnels where confined geometries and ventilation complicate safety monitoring. Existing approaches, including classical machine learning methods, typically detect fire from multivariate correlations but often lack the contextual reasoning required for disambiguation. This limitation becomes critical when HVAC-driven airflow disrupts thermal stratification and dilutes gas concentrations, creating ambiguous patterns that mimic fire signatures. Recent studies suggest that Large Language Models (LLMs) may help address this challenge by translating structured sens…

Penny-Wise and Pound-Foolish in AI-Generated Image Detection.

The rise of AI-generated images has sparked serious concerns about their potential misuse across various domains, prompting the urgent need for robust detection methods. Despite advancements, many current approaches prioritize short-term gains at the expense of long-term effectiveness. This paper critiques the overly specialized approach of fine-tuning pre-trained models for short-term gains on a single AI image dataset, while disregarding the long-term imperative of achieving generalization and knowledge retention. To address this trade-off issue, we propose a novel learning framework (PoundN

Toward Multimodal Conversational AI for Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Despite strong performance of deep learning models in retinal disease detection, most systems produce static predictions without clinical reasoning or interactive explanation. Recent advances in multimodal large language models (MLLMs) integrate diagnostic predictions with clinically meaningful dialogue to support clinical decision-making and patient counseling. In this study, OcularChat, an MLLM, was fine-tuned from Qwen2.5-VL using simulated patient-physician dialogues to diagnose age-related macular degeneration (AMD) through visual question answering on color fundus photographs (CFPs). Explaining Driver Behavior in Sim Racing with Shannon Entropy and LLM Feedback.

In some scenarios, motorsport simulators have been used to enable the controlled acquisition of dense telemetry with high similarity to real-world data, reducing cost when assessing driving performance. However, although popular, performance analyses traditionally treat human control as deterministic and overlook the stochasticity of driving behavior. In fact, existing coaching methods which improve driving performance have to deal with two distinct outcomes: a driver who restructures his race control strategy and a driver who merely repeats it faster. This article presents a Behavior-First fr
