BACKGROUND Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a rapidly progressive malignancy that exhibits an extremely poor prognosis, with most cases diagnosed at an advanced stage. To date, few reports have explored the natural history of PDAC, and the period leading up to the detection of PDAC as a tumor with contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) remains unclear. Here, we report 3 PDAC cases diagnosed incidentally by repeating imaging examinations during observation of other organ cancers. CASE REPORT Two patients were undergoing postoperative follow-up for colorectal cancer; owing to the

BACKGROUND: Some patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have asthma-like features. However, there have been few reports on the structural lung abnormalities found in this patient population. Multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) can detect emphysematous low-attenuation areas (LAA) within the lung, airway thickness (wall area percentage, WA%), and the loss of pulmonary vasculature as the percentage of small pulmonary vessels with cross-sectional area (CSA) less than 5 mm2 (%CSA<5). We analyzed differences in structural lung changes over time between patients with COPD an

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent advancements in transcatheter valvular interventions have resulted in a growing demand for advanced cardiac imaging to help guide these procedures.
RECENT FINDINGS: Both echocardiography and multi-detector computed tomography have played essential roles in the maturation of transcatheter aortic valve replacement and are now building on these experiences and helping inform the nascent field of transcatheter mitral interventions. Advanced imaging is essential to aid in the diagnosis and determination of the mechanism of mitral regurgitation. In addition, they are integ

BACKGROUND: Increased epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) volume is associated with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the efficacy of EAT-based left atrial (LA) ablation for persistent AF (PsAF) is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess whether EAT-based LA ablation is effective for PsAF.
METHODS: In 60 PsAF patients (group I), 3-dimensional reconstructed computed tomography images depicting EAT were merged with NavX-based dominant-frequency (DF) and complex fractionated electrogram (CFE) maps obtained during AF. Pulmonary vein antrum isolation (PVAI) was followed by map-gu

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) increases the left atrial (LA) volume and deteriorates LA function. Whether successful radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) of persistent AF can reverse this process has not been yet established.
METHODS: Patients with persistent AF undergoing RFCA were evaluated with pre- and post- (at 6-months of follow-up) procedural multislice computed tomography (MSCT). The LA functions were assessed through LA time-volume curves.
RESULTS: The study population consisted of 44 patients [age 64 (interquartile ranges: 58, 70) years old, 93% male]. Among those, 31 pat

Left ventricular noncompaction is a rare cardiac pathology that results from an arrest in endomyocardial development in early embryogenesis. With great advances in imaging modalities, this pathological entity has been noted not only in the pediatric population but also in adults. Herein we report the case of a 62-year-old woman who successfully underwent aortic valve replacement for aortic regurgitation complicated by left ventricular noncompaction.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to review the utility of ECG-gated MDCT in evaluating postsurgical findings in aortic and mitral valves. Normal and pathologic findings after aortic and mitral valve corrective surgery are shown in correlation with the findings of the traditionally used imaging modalities echocardiography and fluoroscopy to assist in accurate noninvasive anatomic and dynamic evaluation of postsurgical valvular abnormalities.
CONCLUSION: Because of its superior spatial and adequate temporal resolution, ECG-gated MDCT has emerged as a robust diagnostic tool in the evalu

A left ventricular pseudoaneurysm develops when myocardial rupture is contained by the pericardium. Although left ventricular pseudoaneurysm has been a topic of discussion since the pioneering days of open heart surgery, it still remains a technical challenge in reconstructive cardiac surgery. Reoperation following pseudoaneurysm repair is also frequent. We report surgical treatment in two patients with a pseudoaneurysm on the left ventricular posterolateral wall. The pseudoaneurysm and left ventricular cavity communicated at a point just between the anterolateral and posteromedial papillary m

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: An acquired attic cholesteatoma may spontaneously drain externally into the external auditory canal, leaving a cavity in the attic with the shape of the original cholesteatoma but now filled with air, a phenomenon referred to as "nature's atticotomy" or auto-atticotomy. We describe and quantify the CT appearance of the auto-atticotomy cavity as it pertains to the appearance of the scutum and the lateral attic wall.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients with erosion of the scutum and loss of the lower attic wall on MDCT were identified during a 5-year span. Images
