Trends of snowboarding-related fractures that presented to emergency departments in the United States, 2010 to 2016.

BACKGROUND: Since it was introduced as an Olympic sport in 1998, snowboarding has drawn the participation of individuals of all ages. Despite the growing popularity of this sport, individuals can suffer from a number of musculoskeletal injuries. The specific goals of the study were to: (I) compare the number of injuries and trends of snowboarding injuries; (II) identify the injury occurrences, trends, and incidence of snowboarding-related fractures; and (III) identify the injury occurrences and trends of snowboarding-related fractures by body part. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surv

Patients with ice hockey injuries presenting to US emergency departments, 1990-2006.

CONTEXT: Although the number of US ice hockey participants doubled from 1990 to 2006, no nationally representative studies have examined US ice hockey injuries among participants of all ages during this period. OBJECTIVE: To describe patients with ice hockey injuries presenting to a representative sample of US emergency departments (EDs) from 1990 through 2006. DESIGN: Prospective injury surveillance study. SETTING: The US Consumer Product Safety Commission collects data from 100 nationally representative EDs via the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). PATIENTS OR OTHER

[Variations over time in the accident rate in an automobile manufacturing plant].

This paper describes some characteristics of occupational injuries occurring in a car manufacturing plant during the period 1984-1991. Data regarding all kinds of injuries (not only those which received compensation) were extracted from records compiled by health personnel within the factory according to a sampling scheme that considered the same three months every two years. In addition, all injuries which caused absence from work lasting more than three days were evaluated (without sampling). To compute frequency indexes, the number of hours worked each month/year were obtained. Roughly 650

A case-control study of medium-term exposure to ambient nitrogen dioxide pollution and hospitalization for stroke.

BACKGROUND: There are several plausible mechanisms whereby either short or long term exposure to pollution can increase the risk of stroke. Over the last decade, several studies have reported associations between short-term (day-to-day) increases in ambient air pollution and stroke. The findings from a smaller number of studies that have looked at long-term exposure to air pollution and stroke have been mixed. Most of these epidemiological studies have assigned exposure to air pollution based on place of residence, but these assignments are typically based on relatively coarse spatial resoluti

Injuries in Netball-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Netball is estimated to be played by more than 20 million people worldwide, but there is evidence of high injury incidence. A thorough understanding of the types and rates of netball injuries is essential for effective injury management and prevention strategies to be developed and implemented. This systematic review summarises the published findings with respect to injury types, participant characteristics and any identified risk factors for netball injuries. METHODS: A librarian-assisted computer search of seven scientific databases was conducted for studies reporting on netball

The costs of work-related musculoskeletal disorders in automotive manufacturing.

Inadequate application of ergonomic principles to the design of workplaces and individual jobs has adverse consequences for worker health and safety, especially in terms of strains, sprains, and other musculoskeletal disorders. In addition to the human pain and suffering, other losses are externalized to workers, with adverse financial and psychosocial impacts. There are also costs to employers through workers' compensation claims, scrap, and decreased production quality, medical insurance premiums, labor turnover, and adverse impacts on labor relations, although many of these are not linked b

Epidemiology of Injuries in Professional and Amateur Football Men (Part II).

Background (1): Men's football is a physically demanding contact sport that involves intermittent bouts of sprinting, jogging, walking, jumping and changes of direction. The physical demands of the game vary by level of play (amateur club, sub-elite and open club or international), but injury rates at all levels of the men's football game remain the highest of all sports. Objective: The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review of data from the epidemiological literature regarding the profile, severity and mechanisms of injuries and the frequency of recurrent injuries in professional

Biomechanical aspects of lumbar spine injuries in athletes: a review.

One of the areas of the body which is very often injured by athletes is the lower lack, or the lumbar area of the spine. This problem is of some concern to physical educators, athletic therapists, coaches, athletes, and physicians. The type of injury which occurs in the lumbar spine is dependent on the direction, magnitude, and the point of application of the forces to the spine. This part of the body is susceptible to injury due to the large forces which must be supported, which include the body weight and any external weights, as well as the forces due to very high accelerations of the body

A global evaluation of cheerleading injuries and risk factors: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cheerleading has become growingly popular in recent years due to the nature of athleticism and competitive, which can pose a great risk of injury. The current research aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of cheerleading-related musculoskeletal injuries and its risk factors in amateur or competitive cheerleaders through the presentation as a systematic review and meta-analysis methodology. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A comprehensive search of seven credible databases (the Epistemonikos, Cochrane, Scopus, PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Web of Science) was conducted using two sets of

Understanding Injury Patterns and Predictors in Pickleball Players: A Nationwide Study of 1,758 Participants.

BACKGROUND: Despite pickleball's rapid growth in the United States, research regarding the patterns and predictors of injuries remain sparse. OBJECTIVES: To describe the prevalence and characteristics of injuries, including time-loss (stopping play for at least a day) and non-time-loss injuries, and evaluate the predictors of injuries in pickleball players. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Pickleball players ≥ 18 years of age across the United States, who participated in pickleball at least once a month, were invited to take a pre-validated survey. The primary outcome was self

Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs versus other oral analgesic agents for acute soft tissue injury.

BACKGROUND: Acute soft tissue injuries are common and costly. The best drug treatment for such injuries is not certain, although non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often recommended. There is concern about the use of oral opioids for acute pain leading to dependence. This is an update of a Cochrane Review published in 2015. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits or harms of NSAIDs compared with other oral analgesics for treating acute soft tissue injuries. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the CENTRAL, 2020 Issue 1, MEDLINE (from 1946), and Embase (from 1980) to January 2020; other dat

The "all inside" arthroscopic Broström procedure: a prospective study of 40 consecutive patients.

Lateral ankle sprains are the most common injury in sports. Nonoperative therapy is recommended initially, including functional rehabilitation. Surgery might be an option for those patients in whom nonoperative attempts fail. Various surgical approaches have been described in published studies for treating chronic lateral ankle instability. The procedures are typically grouped into 2 main categories: anatomic and nonanatomic repair of the lateral ligament complex. The open modified Broström-Gould anatomic repair technique is widely accepted as the reference standard for lateral ankle stabiliza
