Characterization of mandibular third molar impaction patterns and a CBCT-derived radiographic extraction difficulty in a Saudi cohort: A retrospective cross-sectional study.

Mandibular third molar (MTM) impaction is the most frequent type of impacted tooth. Therefore, we aimed to report cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-based MTM impaction patterns in a Saudi cohort and to investigate the relationship between these patterns and a CBCT-derived radiographic extraction difficulty. This retrospective cross-sectional study screened 200 consecutive archived CBCT scans (May-October 2025) from King Khalid University Dental Hospital. Sixty-nine patients who had 1 or more impacted MTMs were analyzed and met the eligibility criteria. Impaction type (bony/partial), angulat

Implant-Supported Rehabilitation Following Endodontic Failure in a Patient Classified as American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Physical Status III With Chronic Post-Stroke Hemiplegia: A Multidisciplinary Dental Case Report.

Patients with chronic neurological disabilities frequently present significant challenges in dental treatment due to functional limitations, impaired oral hygiene, and concerns regarding medical risk. These challenges often result in delayed care or refusal of treatment, particularly when surgical procedures and implant rehabilitation are required. This report describes the multidisciplinary dental management of a 76-year-old male patient classified as American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Physical Status III with a history of ischemic cerebrovascular accident resulting in chronic right-

New predictive regression models for estimating the size of unerupted canines and premolars in the Egyptian population.

BACKGROUND: Mixed dentition space analysis assesses the discrepancy between the available and required space within the dental arches during the mixed dentition stage, thereby facilitating the diagnosis and treatment planning of developing malocclusions. So, this study aimed to develop Egyptian population-specific regression equations for predicting the combined mesiodistal widths of permanent canines and premolars (Σ345) and to compare their predictive accuracy with that of the Tanaka and Johnston method. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 450 denta

Exploring threshold concepts, tacit knowledge, and strategies for competency in restorative dentistry and fixed prosthodontics: a mixed-methods study among undergraduate dental students.

BACKGROUND: Acquiring competency in restorative dentistry (RD) and fixed prosthodontics (FP) is challenging for undergraduate dental students due to the presence of threshold concepts and tacit knowledge. The aim of this study was to identify the threshold concepts (knowledge barriers) and tacit knowledge (skill development barriers) necessary for achieving competencies in RD and FP using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The strategies for attaining these competencies were also proposed. METHODS: The present study adopted a critical-theorist mixed-method study design, using quantitati

Three-dimensional finite element analysis of the effects of different force vectors on tooth movement in miniscrew-assisted en masse retraction.

PURPOSE: This study evaluates the effects of different force directions on tooth movement in miniscrew-assisted en masse retraction using finite element analysis (FEA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A three-dimensional (3D) finite element model was constructed to simulate en masse retraction in sliding mechanics. A retraction force of 200 g was applied from the anterior retraction hook (ARH) to a miniscrew, and force vectors were resolved along the X, Y, and Z axes. Six different configurations were analysed by varying the ARH (5 mm and 8 mm) and miniscrew heights (6 mm, 8 mm, and 12 mm). Displaceme

Radiographic Evaluation of Impacted Third Mandibular Molar According to the Classification of Winter, Pell and Gregory in a Sample of Cameroonian Population.

BACKGROUND: The extraction of impacted third molars (M3) is a common surgical procedure in dentistry and oral surgery. Various complications, including inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) damage, may occur during and after extraction of this tooth. Radiographic examination should provide information about the M3 itself, but also about the surrounding bony structure and the relationship of the roots to the IAN and the adjacent second molar, which is often traumatized during this extraction. The aim of our study was to evaluate the depth and angulation of impacted mandibular third molars (M3) from pan

Enhancing attachment of human gingival fibroblasts to periodontally compromised teeth: A comparative analysis of hyaluronic acid, EDTA, enamel matrix derivatives.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession is a characteristic indicator of periodontitis and one of the factors that contributes to increased tooth clinical crown length. Patients with root exposure frequently undergo periodontal surgical procedures in addition to adjunctive therapy to increase root coverage area and soft tissue stability. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate fibroblast-root surface adhesion and determine whether periodontitis-damaged root surface microstructure can be restored using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and an enamel matrix derivative (EMD), individually or in combin

An intriguing new diapsid reptile with evidence of mandibulo-dental pathology from the early Permian of Oklahoma revealed by neutron tomography.

The initial stages of diapsid evolution, the clade that includes extant reptiles and the majority of extinct reptilian taxa, is surprisingly poorly known. Notwithstanding the hypothesis that varanopids are diapsids rather than synapsids, there are only four araeoscelidians and one neodiapsid present in the late Carboniferous and early Permian. Here we describe the fragmentary remains of a very unusual new amniote from the famous cave deposits near Richards Spur, Oklahoma, that we recognize as a diapsid reptile, readily distinguishable from all other early amniotes by the unique dentition and l

Effect of Porous Microstructures on the Biomechanical Characteristics of a Root Analogue Implant: An Animal Study and a Finite Element Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Full ceramic or metal custom-made root analogue implants (RAIs) are made by replicating the natural tooth geometry. However, it may lead to the stress shielding of the surrounding bone, and an RAI is unable to easily achieve primary stability. Therefore, to improve primary stability and reduce stress shielding, RAI porous structures are proposed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of porous microstructures on the biomechanical characteristics of the custom-made RAI. METHODS: Porous and bulk titanium cylinders and porous RAI and conventional implants for in vivo t

Diagnosis and treatment of extraction sockets in preparation for implant placement: report of three cases.

This article addresses diagnostic parameters that should be assessed in the treatment of extraction sockets with dental implant placement by presenting three case reports that emphasize the relevance of the amount of remaining bone walls. Diagnosis was based on the analysis of clinical and radiographic parameters (e.g.: bone defect morphology, remaining bone volume, presence of infections on the receptor site). Case 1 presents a 5-wall defect in the maxillary right central incisor region with severe root resorption, which was treated with immediate implant placement. Cases 2 and 3 present, res
