Microalbuminuria: a sentinel of neurocognitive impairment in HIV-infected individuals?

BACKGROUND: According to population-based studies, microalbuminuria is associated with subsequent cognitive decline over a 4-6-year period, because of cerebral small-vessel disease (CSVD). This prospective cross-sectional study (NCT02852772) was designed to evaluate whether a history of microalbuminuria is associated with subsequent cognitive decline in combined antiretroviral therapy (cART)-treated persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIVs). METHODS: From our computerized medical database, we identified 30 PLHIVs (median age 52 years), immunovirologically controlled on cART, w

Cognitive Reserve and Age Predict Cognitive Recovery after Mild to Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

The persistence of injury-related cognitive impairments can have devastating consequences for everyday function after traumatic brain injury (TBI). This longitudinal study examined the association of long-term cognitive recovery in 109 adults (71% male) experiencing complicated mild-to-severe TBI with age, pre-morbid intelligence (IQ), and injury severity measured by post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) duration. Participants' twice completed measures of pre-morbid IQ (National Adult Reading Test), attention (Digit Symbol Coding Test), memory (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test), and executive function…

NL reading skills mediate the relationship between NL phonological processing skills and a foreign language (FL) reading skills in students with and without dyslexia: a case of a NL (Polish) and FL (English) with different degrees of orthographic consistency.

The aim of our study was to examine the relationship between NL (Native Language: Polish) phonological processing skills (verbal and phonological short-term memory, phoneme segmentation and blending, rapid automatised naming (RAN)) and the accuracy and fluency of NL and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) word and nonword decoding and word recognition skills of Polish students with and without dyslexia. Sixty-three (45%) high school and junior high school students with and 78 (55%) without dyslexia participated. We found that dyslexia, years of studying EFL at school and privately, NL phoneme

Maternal Responsiveness to Gestures in Children With Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: This study compared gesture use in young children with Down syndrome (DS) and typical development (TD) as well as how mothers respond to child gestures based on child age and diagnosis. METHOD: Twenty-two mother-child dyads with DS and 22 mother-child dyads with TD participated. The child participants were between 22 and 63 months and were matched on chronological age. We coded child gesture use and whether mothers recoded child gestures (i.e., provided a verbal translation) during naturalistic interactions. RESULTS: The children with DS used more gestures than peers with TD. After

Age-dependent cognitive dysfunction in untreated hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis.

Central nervous system (CNS) involvement in hereditary transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis has been described in patients whose disease course was modified by liver transplant. However, cognitive dysfunction has yet to be investigated in those patients. Moreover, CNS involvement in untreated patients or asymptomatic mutation carriers remains to be studied. A series of 340 carriers of the TTRVal30Met mutation (180 symptomatic and 160 asymptomatic) underwent a neuropsychological assessment, which included the Dementia Rating Scale-2 (DRS-2), auditory verbal learning test, semantic fluency, phonemic …

Total recognition discriminability in Huntington's and Alzheimer's disease.

Both the original and second editions of the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) provide an index of total recognition discriminability (TRD) but respectively utilize nonparametric and parametric formulas to compute the index. However, the degree to which population differences in TRD may vary across applications of these nonparametric and parametric formulas has not been explored. We evaluated individuals with Huntington's disease (HD), individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD), healthy middle-aged adults, and healthy older adults who were administered the CVLT-II. Yes/no recognition memor…

Linear and non-linear associations of symptom dimensions and cognitive function in first-onset psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Associations between symptom dimensions and cognition have been mainly studied in non-affective psychosis. The present study investigated whether previously reported associations between cognition and four symptom dimensions (reality distortion, negative symptoms, disorganisation and depression) in non-affective psychosis generalise to a wider spectrum of psychoses. It also extended the research focus to mania, a less studied symptom dimension. METHODS: Linear and non-linear (quadratic, curvilinear or inverted-U-shaped) associations between cognition and the above five symptom dim

Substance use is a risk factor for neurocognitive deficits and neuropsychiatric distress in acute and early HIV infection.

The acute and early stages of HIV infection (AEH) are characterized by substantial viral replication, immune activation, and alterations in brain metabolism. However, little is known about the prevalence and predictors of neurocognitive deficits and neuropsychiatric disturbances during this period. The present study examined the impact of demographic, HIV disease, and substance use factors on HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment and self-reported neuropsychiatric distress among 46 antiretroviral-naive adults with median duration of infection of 75 days relative to a sample of 21 HIV serone
