It has been demonstrated that psychological and psychosocial factors are implicated in spontaneous and recurrent spontaneous abortions. According to these results we showed in our review, that certain psychological disorders, such as anxiety and nervousness, psychosomatic and personality disorders, negative attitude towards sexuality and pregnancy, parental conflicts and others may impair pregnancy outcome. Severe psychological and psychiatric problems prior to pregnancy were rarely evidenced, in opposite, depressive reactions after pregnancy loss frequently observed. The results suggest possi

The process of fertilization in humans, is remarkably inefficient. Spontaneous abortion is estimated to be between 15 and 20% of all clinical pregnancies, and the early spontaneous abortion rate is closer to 30-50% of fertilized ova. Not all authors agree on the definition of "recurrent spontaneous abortion" (RSA), so the frequency of repeated pregnancy wastage is difficult to determine; from empirically derived data, it has been estimated to range between 0.4 and 0.8%. Because of the various etiologies of RSA, their association in determining an abortive event, it is difficult to evaluate the

Analyses of spontaneous abortion rates often include special provisions to account for the presumed distorting effects that arise because of the presence of habitual aborters. In this paper, I establish a framework for investigating the effects of the presence in study groups of such women. I then examine the strengths and weaknesses of some of the analysis strategies in current use, both in situations where the study group is homogeneous and where there are high-risk women present. I show that the concept of habitual aborter is not useful and can be misleading, and I suggest that one take a b

345 spontaneous abortions of the period 1975/76 are investigated histologically. 174 of them content chorionic villi (100 per cent). Among these we have found 91 abortive ovas (52.3 per cent), 7 hydatiform moles (4.0 per cent) and 35 histological regular abortions (20.1 per cent). Furthermore, 41 cases are suspicious of abortive ova (23.6 per cent) and, 22 cases show signs of early disturbances of placental maturation (12.7 per cent). In all groups there is inflammation of the maternal side and of the endometrium. Regressive changes of the villi are particularly severe in abortive ovas and in

Most of the time, spontaneous abortion is a random event and represents the natural selection process. Although a recurrent factor may be present and may cause one or more abortions for a given couple, such instances are rare. Well-substantiated causes include parental chromosomal abnormalities (e.g., translocation), antiphospholipid syndrome, PCOD, and maternal age greater than 40 years. Müllerian duplication defects are most likely a cause of pregnancy loss for some women. A growing body of evidence refutes the role of corpus luteum defect as a common cause of recurrent abortion. Other cause
