Female sheep were used to determine the regions of the gastrointestinal tract able to absorb Cu. Copper was absorbed from the abomasum, small intestine and colon, but not from the rumen-reticulum or caecum. In vitro studies indicated that Cu uptake was linearly related to the Cu concentration. The human gastrointestinal system can absorb 30-40% of ingested copper from the typical diets consumed in industrialized countries. Experimental data support the existence of a carrier-mediated transport mechanism with an affinity constant in the micromolar range. The majority of migraine attacks are associated with gastrointestinal symptoms which add considerably to the distress and inconvenience caused by the headache. When salicylate absorption from effervescent aspirin tablets was studied during migraine, the rate of absorption was found to be reduced relative to that found in non-migrainous volunteers and in the same patients when headache-free.
