[Complement system proteins in the acute phase of myocardial infarction].

Content of C3 and C4 fractions was decreased in blood of patients with acute primary myocardial infarction within the first day of the disease as compared with the level of these fractions observed just after the hospitalization of the patients. These data suggest the activation of the complement system during this first period of the disease. The activation occurred mainly in the usual way as evidenced by single-directed alterations in content of C3 and C4 fractions. The activation of the complement system within the first day of the disease in apparently one of its pathogenetical manifestati

Between the shells: a review of acute-phase proteins in turtles.

Acute-phase proteins (APPs) are used in veterinary science for diagnosing disease, identifying acute and subclinical inflammatory processes, monitoring disease progression, assessing patient response to treatment, and as a general health screening tool. In turtles, the utility of APPs, such as albumin, haptoglobin, fibrinogen, and myeloid-related protein (MRP)-126, as inflammatory markers has been investigated in a small number of studies. Serum or plasma protein electrophoresis, immunoassays, and biochemistry assays are most commonly employed to study such APPs, with mass spectrometry-based p…

Hepatic lipidosis: Liver characteristics and acute phase proteins in affected turkeys.

The hepatic lipidosis (HL) in fattening turkeys is a disease has been known for a long time, but the cause and pathogenesis is still not clarified. A recent study reported unexplained high levels of iron in liver tissue of fattening turkeys suffering from HL. In this study, the iron status, possible infectious or inflammatory influences in form of an acute phase reaction and the analysis of fatty acid pattern in liver tissue of turkeys affected by HL were examined. Three cases of HL on three different fattening turkey farms were investigated during the outbreak of the disease. Clinically affec

Hyporetinolemia and acute phase proteins in children with and without xerophthalmia.

BACKGROUND: The relations among hyporetinolemia, acute phase proteins, and vitamin A status in children are unclear. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to examine the relations between acute phase proteins and plasma retinol concentrations in children with and without clinical vitamin A deficiency (Bitot spots and night blindness). DESIGN: The study was a nonconcurrent analysis of acute phase protein concentrations and other data from a previous clinical trial. Preschool children, 3-6 y of age, with (n = 118) and without (n = 118) xerophthalmia were assigned to receive oral vitamin A (60 mg retino

Interleukin-6 and acute-phase proteins in head and neck cancer.

The acute-phase response is the answer of the organism to a disturbance of its homeostasis and is characterized by dramatic changes in the concentration of some plasma proteins defined as acute-phase proteins. In recent years several data have shown that interleukin-6 (IL-6) is the major inducer of acute-phase protein synthesis in human hepatocytes. Recently, we demonstrated higher IL-6 serum levels in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients than in healthy subjects. In the present study we examined the relationship between levels of IL-6 and of several acute-phase proteins, including C-reactive p…

Acute phase proteins and infectious complications after surgery for esophageal cancer.

Severe septic complications are the major cause of operative mortality in patients with esophageal cancer. We examined the levels of acute phase proteins together with infection-related complications after surgery in a large number of patients with esophageal cancer and compared them with a group of patients with gastric cancer and healthy controls. Elevations in alpha 1-antitrypsin, alpha 1-acidglycoprotein, haptoglobin and ceruloplasmin were evident in patients with esophageal cancer, being more predominant when compared to the findings in patients with gastric cancer. Although the mean leve

[Proteins of the "acute-phase" in prematures and newborns (author's transl)].

Three proteins of the "acute phase" (p.a.p.) were determined in the serum of 113 premature and newborns during the first 10 days of life. In all 13 cases with septicemia or severe infection high levels of c-reactive protein (CRP) and haptoglobin (Hp) were found, in 22 babies with suspected infection elevated CRP- and Hp-concentrations were found 13 and 14 times respectively. In 73 healthy newborns low levels of CRP were detectable 6 times, Hp however, was markedly elevated 25 times. Nutrition or injuries did not influence the production of Hp. The concentration of the third p.a.p. the acid alp

Acute phase proteins as local biomarkers of respiratory infection in calves.

BACKGROUND: Cumulating reports suggest that acute phase proteins (APPs) do not only play a role as systemic inflammatory mediators, but are also expressed in different tissues as local reaction to inflammatory stimuli. The present study aimed to evaluate presence and changes in luminal lung concentrations of the APPs haptoglobin (Hp), lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP), C-reactive protein (CRP), and lactoferrin (Lf) in calves with an acute respiratory disease experimentally induced by Chlamydia (C.) psittaci. RESULTS: Intra-bronchial inoculation of the pathogen resulted in a consistent

Circulation levels of acute phase proteins in patients with Takayasu arteritis.

OBJECTIVE: Takayasu arteritis (TA) is an immune-mediated disease with an unknown etiology. Assessment of disease activity in patients with TA is challenging owing to the absence of reliable serologic markers. Because circulation levels of acute-phase proteins fluctuate with the severity and extent of the inflammatory reaction, they may be potential biomarkers for the identification of TA activity. To test this hypothesis, certain acute-phase proteins were examined in TA patients and controls. METHODS: The study included 43 prospectively selected TA patients, with 18 in active phase and 25 in …

[Examination of acute phase proteins concentrations in children with allergic rhinitis].

INTRODUCTION: Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory disorder of upper respiratory tract (about 15 per cent of the population in industrialized countries suffer from this condition), characterized by frequent sneezing and a runny or stuffy nose sometimes accompanied by watery eyes. As the most common allergic condition, allergic rhinitis affects people of all ages. Boys are twice as likely to get allergic rhinitis than girls. The median age of onset of the condition is 10 years old, meaning that equal numbers of children develop the condition before and after age 10. Symptoms usually appear in c

Acute-phase proteins in gingival crevicular fluid during experimentally induced gingivitis.

The dynamics of four acute-phase proteins were investigated in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) during the course of a 21 day experimental gingivitis study. These acute-phase proteins were the protease inhibitors alpha 2-macroglobulin (alpha 2-M) and alpha 1-antitrypsin (alpha 1-AT) and the iron-binding proteins transferrin (TF) and lactoferrin (LF). 6 healthy volunteers ceased all oral hygiene procedures for 3 weeks. GCF was sampled at seven day intervals from two sites per subject by paper strips for 30 s during the experimental gingivitis period and for two additional weeks after the reinsti…

[Acute-phase proteins in women with a copper IUD (author's transl)].

Acute-phase (AP) proteins haptoglobin, alpha1-antitrypsin and C-reactive protein were measured in 50 women before and 10 to 30 weeks after insertion of a copper T-200. No statistically significant increase in AP proteins was found. Since these proteins are synthesized in the liver, the results indicate the lack of a systemic humoral reaction of the organism in women with a copper-containing IUD.

Heritability of neonatal acute phase protein levels.

Levels of neonatal Acute Phase Proteins (APPs) have been associated with autism and schizophrenia. The relative contributions of genetic and environmental factors to variation in APP levels in the neonatal period are not known. Therefore, we used one of the largest twin samples to date to map the proportions of heritable and non-heritable factors to variations in APPs measured shortly after birth. Moreover, we investigated if any association existed between neonatal APP levels and autism, among monozygotic and dizygotic twins discordant for autism. Twins were identified and enrolled from regis

Acute-phase proteins in cats with obstructive feline lower urinary tract disease.

BACKGROUND: Feline obstructive disease of the lower urinary tract (FLUTD) is a common pathologic condition of cats. It can be related to sterile inflammation, which leads to acute impairment of renal function and the accumulation of electrolytes and acid-base imbalance. Acute-phase proteins (APPs) are biomarkers of tissue damage from inflammation that assist in monitoring treatment and prognosis. OBJECTIVE: Monitoring the inflammatory processes of obstructive feline lower urinary tract disease through the determination of plasma fibrinogen concentrations and serum concentrations of the acute-…

Intestinal pathogens, diarrhoea and acute phase proteins in naturally infected dairy calves.

In this study, the association between Eimeria spp. related signs and innate immune response in dairy calves was examined. Calves (n=100) aged 15-60 days were clinically examined and faecal samples, blood samples and deep nasopharyngeal swabs obtained. The samples were analysed for intestinal pathogens, acute phase proteins and WBC count, and respiratory tract pathogens, respectively. Diarrhoea was diagnosed in 32.6% (23.3-43.0%, 95% CI) of calves. An association between the pathogenic Eimeria spp. and diarrhoea was detected by multiple correspondence analysis. Eimeria related signs (diarrhoea
