Necrotic adenoids in post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders.

PROBLEM: Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD) are a potentially fatal complication after solid organ transplantation. The ma … n obstructive necrotic mass in the naso-pharynx. The anatomic-pathologic analysis revealed necrotic adenoids. CONCLUSIONS: Necrotic tonsillitis is common. Necrosis of the adenoids, although rarer, can also occur and explains the important respiratory distress. Since two thirds of PTLD patients present with clinical symptoms in the ENT area, the otorhinola …

The EBV action in tonsils and adenoids.

The bacteria involved in tonsil disease have been well studied, but we cannot say the same for the viruses. The method to detect virus make … tonsil has rarely been investigated. Our objective was to study the frequency of EBV in tonsils and adenoids and to define the correlation between EBV and adenoid hyperplasia. In this study, we looked for EBV in adenoid and tonsil tissue of 165 patients (2 and 15 years old ) by in situ hybridization (ISH) for EBER 1/2 RNA. Resection of the adenoids was don …

Tonsils and adenoids. When is surgery indicated?

The efficacy of tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy in the management of urgent problems such as cor pulmonale, acute airway obstruction, or functional impairment of nasal respiration, speech, or swallowing is unquestioned. However, relative indications for surgery such as odynophagia, otalgia, or otitis media with effusion are more controversial. The limitations and risks of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy in these patients are explored.

What's New with Tubes, Tonsils, and Adenoids?

Evidence-based recommendations are constantly being updated for various pediatric surgical procedures, including the role for tympanostomy tubes, as well as indications for adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy. With a growing body of research available on some of the most prevalent pediatric conditions, an update on the current concepts surrounding management is warranted.

Frequent detection of Saffold cardiovirus in adenoids.

Saffold virus (SAFV) is classified into the Cardiovirus genus of the Picornaviridae family. Up to now, eleven genotypes have been identified however, their clinical significance remains unclear. Here, we investigated the presence of SAFV in asymptomatic patients admitted for adenoidectomy. A total of 70 adenoid tissue samples were collected from children with clinical symptoms caused by hypertrophy of adenoids but without symptoms of airway infection. Samples were investigated for SAFV by RT-nested PCR and sequence analysis. Eleven of 70 (15.7%) samples were positive for SAFV. Nasopharyngeal s…

Maternal microchimerism in juvenile tonsils and adenoids.

During pregnancy small amounts of cells pass between the mother and the fetus, and this transfer may give rise to a chimeric state that persist for years in both individuals. Both fetal and maternal microchimerism (MMc) have been associated with different autoimmune disorders. Information about MMc in tissues of healthy individuals is sparse but is important when looking for maternal cells within affected tissues of certain diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of maternal cells in tonsils and adenoids of 20 healthy children between the ages of 2 and 15 years. All t…

[Adenoids and sickly children: clinico-morphological parallels].

This paper presents comparative clinical and somatometric characteristics of sickly children. Statistical analysis demonstrated the relationship between immunological characteristics, somatic types, degree of enlargement of the pharyngeal tonsil, and mucociliary transport time. The authors undertook an attempt to address the problem of adenoids with reference to constitutional types of the patients.

The immune response in adenoids and tonsils.

INTRODUCTION: Glaucoma is characterized by optic neuropathy of the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Retinal ganglian cell death may be mediated by apoptosis. TP53 is involved in this process. It can also be found that excitotoxicity contributes to apoptosis by excess stimulation of glutamate receptors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of the TP53 (rs1042522) and GRIN2B (rs3764028) gene polymorphisms with risk of occurrence of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 186 patients and 188 healthy subjects. Genomic DNA was ex

[Adenoids and adenoiditis in the physiology and pathology of childhood].

Histological and immunohistochemical studies of surgically removed adenoid vegetations (a group included 100 children aged 2 to 14 years) have established that adenoids represent pharyngeal tonsils with lymphoid tissue hyperplasia that reflects a cooperative immune response with the participation of various cell populations and subpopulations of cellular and humoral immunities. An immune response is induced outside through the specialized structures of the reticular epithelium that expresses HLA-DR molecules. The pharyngeal tonsil is shown to be not only an inductive organ of mucosal immunity,…

Adenoids of patients with mucopolysaccharidoses demonstrate typical alterations.

OBJECTIVE: Tonsillar hypertrophy caused by the progressive accumulation of partially degraded glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) within the cells is a typical symptom in patients with mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). We studied the tissue of adenoids and tonsils of patients suffering from MPS with special regard to characteristic morphological features serving as possible markers for diagnosis. METHODS: Adenoids of 87 patients and tonsils of 4 patients with MPS (2 patients with MPS I, 7 MPS II, 5 MPS IV and 10 MPS VI and 63 controls) and controls were examined. Examinations were repeated in a blinded mann…

[Hyperplastic adenoids and growth of the facial skeleton].

A case of a 16-year old female patient with large hyperplastic adenoids is presented. The only subjective symptoms were blocked nasal ventilation and subsequent permanent mouth breathing for 10 years. Concomitant sinusitis and middle ear affection were absent. In addition a gothic palate with malocclusion due to prognathism was found. The possible relationship between hyperplastic adenoids, chronic mouth breathing and craniofacial growth is discussed.

Correlation between adenoidal nasopharyngeal ratio and symptoms of enlarged adenoids in children with adenoidal hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid hypertrophy is one of the most common health problems affecting the paediatric population. This study aims to correlate adenoidal nasopharyngeal ratio (ANR) with symptoms of enlarged adenoids in children with enlarged adenoids. MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was a year, cross-sectional, hospital-based study conducted at Lautech Teaching Hospital, Osogbo. ANR was determined by dividing adenoidal depth with nasopharyngeal depth on the plain lateral radiographs. RESULTS: A total of 90 consecutive children consisting of 61 males and 29 females were included in the study with M:F r…

[Adenoids-diagnosis and treatment: the new German S2k guideline].

Hyperplasia of the pharyngeal tonsils is to be considered pathologic when nasopharyngeal symptoms of mechanical obstruction and/or chronic i … ng questionnaire, which is obligatory before every pediatric surgery, is referred to. Recurrence of adenoids is possible despite correct adenoidectomy. Before discharge home, otorhinolaryngologic inspection of the nasopharynx for secondary bleeding should be performed and anesthesiologic clearance obtained.
