We studied retrospectively 212 patients with parotid tumors who were treated in our hospital between October 1981 and March 1998. Warthin's tumor (adenolymphoma) is a monomorphous adenoma of the salivary glands well characterized histologically. Warthin's tumour (adenolymphoma) is a well defined salivary gland tumour which consists of epithelial and lymphoid components. However, the malignant transformation of adenolymphoma is extremely rare. We are reporting a case of squamous cell carcinoma which arose in a Warthin's tumour of the right parotid gland, to highlight its varied cytolomorphological features which can cause diagnostic problems on cytological examination. Clinical data of 252 patients with parotid gland adenomas (PGA) were produced. The authors describe a case of a "separate" type of salivary adenocarcinoma-like tumor. The growth is described as a papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the submaxillary gland, which should be distinguished from degenerate adenolymphoma. This malignant tumor, which remains "enclosed" until late, grows slowly and should be checked regularly over a protracted period of time following surgical excision performed in accordance with cancer therapy specifications.

A parotid tumor having sebaceous differentiation and a particular histologic picture previously undescribed is reported. The tumor showed features of an adenolymphoma but almost completely lacked a lymphoid component. Sebaceous differentiation was seen in the epithelium of many cysts. Additionally, groups of oxyphilic cells were scattered throughout the tumor. The literature concerning sebaceous differentiation in normal and tumor bearing parotid glands, as well as that concerning tumors with some sebaceous component, is briefly discussed.

Cytologic examination was performed on 22 known oral tumors of glandular origin. Cytologically, the cells of benign pleomorphic adenomas and an adenolymphoma could easily be identified as of benign tumor origin, but cytologic determination of malignancy was difficult in 11 of 14 malignant tumors due to lack of malignant features. A precise and comparative study of the morphologic details of the tumor cells with the histologic findings, however, seemed to suggest a possibility of determining the histologic type even in smear preparations.
