Bonding wood with uncondensed lignins as adhesives.

Plywood is widely used in construction, such as for flooring and interior walls, as well as in the manufacture of household items such as furniture and cabinets. Such items are made of wood veneers that are bonded together with adhesives such as urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins1,2. Researchers in academia and industry have long aimed to synthesize lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives using biomass-derived lignin, a phenolic polymer that can be used to substitute the petroleum-derived phenol3-6. However, lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives are less attractive to ply…

Tissue adhesives for closure of surgical incisions.

BACKGROUND: Sutures (stitches), staples and adhesive tapes have been used for many years as methods of wound closure, but tissue adhesives have entered clinical practice more recently. Closure of wounds with sutures enables the closure to be meticulous, but the sutures may show tissue reactivity and can require removal. Tissue adhesives offer the advantages of an absence of risk of needlestick injury and no requirement to remove sutures later. Initially, tissue adhesives were used primarily in emergency room settings, but this review looks at the use of tissue adhesives in the operating room/t…

Tissue adhesives for closure of surgical incisions.

BACKGROUND: Sutures, staples and adhesive tapes are the traditional methods of wound closure, whilst tissue adhesives have entered clinical practice more recently. Closure of wounds with sutures enables meticulous closure, but sutures may induce tissue reactivity and they usually require removal. Tissue adhesives offer the advantages there are no sutures to remove later for the patient and no risk of needlestick injury to the surgeon. Tissue adhesives have been used primarily in emergency rooms but this review looks at the use of tissue adhesives in the operating room where surgeons are increa…

Are one-step adhesives easier to use and better performing? Multifactorial assessment of contemporary one-step self-etching adhesives.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to examine whether one-step self-etching adhesives (1-SEAs) really have an advantage over multistep systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine one-step self-etching adhesives (Absolute, Adper Prompt L-Pop, Clearfil S3 Bond, G-Bond, Hybrid Bond, iBond, One-up Bond F Plus, Optibond All-in-one and Xeno III) were included in this study. One two-step self-etching adhesive (Clearfil SE Bond) and one three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (Optibond FL) served as controls. Their microtensile bond strength to bur-cut enamel and dentin was determined using a standardized …

Self-neutralizing tannin-citric acid wood adhesives.

Tannin-based adhesives have historically relied on formaldehyde or hexamine hardeners, but recent research has focused on sustainable alternatives, such as tannin-citric acid adhesives, which avoid harmful chemicals and show prospect to provide a viable eco-friendly solution for wood bonding applications. However, these adhesives typically suffer from low pH, leading to long-term degradation of wood substrates. This study aims to regulate the pH of tannin-citric acid adhesives by introducing morpholine complexes with weak acids (succinic and malic acids), thereby improving the adhesive's mecha…

Functional Macromolecular Adhesives for Bone Fracture Healing.

Compared with traditional internal fixation devices, bone adhesives are expected to exhibit remarkable advantages, such as improved fixation of comminuted fractures and maintained spatial location of fractured scattered bone pieces in treating bone injuries. In this review, different bone adhesives are summarized from the aspects of bone tissue engineering, and the applications of bone adhesives are emphasized. The concepts of "liquid scaffold" and "liquid plate" are proposed to summarize two different research directions of bone adhesives. Furthermore, significant advances of bone adhesives i…

Contact Dermatitis and Medical Adhesives: A Review.

In more recent years, the use of medical adhesives in lieu of sutures or staples has become increasingly common for the closure of post-surgical and traumatic incisions in areas of the skin where tension is low. While medical adhesives possess many advantages and little risk of adverse side effects, there are increasing numbers of accounts in the medical literature of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) caused by specific components contained within the medical adhesives. The goal of this paper is to provide physicians with a differential diagnosis when faced with complications after the use of …

Smart Actuators and Adhesives for Reconfigurable Matter.

Biological systems found in nature provide excellent stimuli-responsive functions. The camouflage adaptation of cephalopods (octopus, cuttle … d composite gels with different responsiveness will be discussed. Finally, the development of smart adhesives with on-demand adhesion strength is critically required to maintain the robust reconfigurable shapes and for the switching on/off of the binding between components or with target objects. Among various connectors and adhesives, thermoresponsive nano …

A review of acrylates: Super glue, nail adhesives, and diabetic pump adhesives increasing sensitization risk in women and children.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a cutaneous type IV hypersensitivity immune reaction mounted against substances in contact with the skin to which the patient has been sensitized. ACD is common, affecting approximately 72 million Americans per year, and is more common in women. One common contact allergen group is acrylates, which are monomers that are polymerized in the making of glues, adhesives, and plastic materials. It is the monomers that are sensitizing, whereas the final polymers are inert. Acrylates were the 2012 Contact Allergen of the Year with the specific acrylate, isobornyl a…

Antimicrobial Gelatin Methacryloyl (GelMA)/Bioactive Glass Dental Adhesives.

Oral diseases, such as periodontitis, remain a major global concern due to their high incidence and significant morbidity. The principal drivers are bacterial overgrowth and associated inflammation. Bioactive glass of the 45S5 Bioglass® composition (BG) is known for its remineralising, osteogenic and antibacterial effects via ion release, but its application has been limited in oral environments. In this study, a photocurable GelMA hydrogel was developed as a carrier matrix for BG (1-15% w/v) to obtain synergy between the adhesive properties of the GelMA and the bioactivity of the glass. Incor

Hemostatic Tough Adhesives seal tissue and control hemorrhage.

Hemorrhage from internal organs remains a critical challenge in both trauma care and surgical procedures, as existing hemostatic adjuncts frequently fail to provide consistent and effective bleeding control, particularly under conditions of active bleeding or impaired coagulation. Here, we develop and evaluate a Hemostatic Tough Adhesive (HTA) in controlled preclinical models of traumatic solid organ injury and compare its performance against leading commercially available hemostatic agents. The HTA consistently outperformed its counterparts, achieving 100% hemostasis in both liver and spleen

Silicone adhesives and skin health in laryngectomy care.

Peristomal skin complications are common in patients following a laryngectomy because of the repeated use of devices requiring medical adhesive. Medical adhesive-related skin injury (MARSI) is increasingly recognised as a preventable source of pain, infection risk and reduced quality of life. Laryngectomy patients are particularly vulnerable owing to age-related skin changes, radiotherapy, malnutrition and prolonged moisture exposure. Historically, MARSI has been accepted as an unwelcome side effect of care in this patient group. This article explores the pathophysiology of MARSI, risk factors

Bio-Based Epoxy Adhesives Reinforced with Recycled Fillers.

This study explores the potential of a bio-based thermosetting adhesive system incorporating recycled fillers to enhance structural bonding … tiffness and adhesion strength, particularly in CMC joints. These findings suggest that DGEVA-based adhesives reinforced with recycled fillers offer a viable and sustainable alternative for structural bonding, contributing to waste valorization and green material development in engineering applications.
