Conduct disorder and personality disorders in hospitalized adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between DSM-III-R Axis I and II psychiatric diagnoses in hospitalized adolescents with and without conduct disorder. The spectrum of psychopathology associated with conduct disorder, especially personality disorder symptoms and diagnoses, remains largely unexplored. METHOD: Twenty-five inpatients were evaluated using the Diagnostic Interview for Children and Adolescents, Adolescent Version (DICA-R-A); the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children, Epidemiologic Version (K-SADS-E) (panic d

Safety Considerations for Hospitalized Children and Adolescents With Obesity.

Children and adolescents with obesity make up a growing proportion of hospitalized patients. As a result, pediatric hospital providers are increasingly providing care for patients whose weight meaningfully influences safety during admissions. This review provides practical, evidence-informed guidance for the inpatient care of children and adolescents with obesity to prevent harm and optimize healing. Key safety considerations include identifying obesity-related complications and obesity medications that can impact inpatient risk, using tailored laboratory and imaging strategies that account fo

Refeeding Hypophosphatemia in Hospitalized Adolescents With Anorexia Nervosa.

Refeeding hypophosphatemia in hospitalized adolescents with anorexia nervosa is correlated with degree of malnutrition, with a high index of suspicion for severely malnourished patients (<70% median body mass index). Weight history (greater magnitude or rate of weight loss prior to admission) regardless of presentation weight has also been associated with lower serum phosphate. Higher energy meal-based refeeding starting at 2,000 kcal has not been shown to be associated with higher rates of refeeding hypophosphatemia than the traditional standard of care, lower energy refeeding. [The effects of the psychiatric hospital on an adolescent's sexual development.].

Diego, a young adolescent, is hospitalised in a psychiatric unit for anorexia. The diagnosis of anorexia, as well as medical practices, result in resistance from the young man, for whom being "anorexic" seems incompatible with a masculine and heterosexual vision of oneself. His passage through the psychiatric unit is then not without effect on his sexual development.

Symptomatology of adopted and nonadopted adolescents in a psychiatric hospital.

This study compared the symptomatology and diagnoses of adopted and nonadopted adolescents in a psychiatric hospital. Data were gathered from the hospital charts of adolescents who already had been discharged from the hospital. Contrary to expectations, adoptees were no more likely than nonadoptees to have received personality disorder diagnoses, nor were they more likely to be hospitalized as the result of antisocial behavior. However, in comparison with nonadopted adolescents, the adopted adolescents were younger upon admission to the hospital, significantly less often diagnosed psychotic, a

Pain Prevalence and Treatment in Hospitalized Children and Adolescents at a US Tertiary Pediatric Hospital.

Poorly controlled acute pain is associated with worsened patient outcomes. Prior studies suggest that acute pain is a common complaint among hospitalized pediatric patients, but recent studies with substantial numbers of patients from US hospitals are lacking. We retrospectively reviewed inpatients at a single academic children's hospital during twelve 24-hour periods in 2021. Outcomes were assessed for patients on non-intensive care unit (ICU) inpatient floors and in ICUs. The primary outcome was any presence of moderate to severe pain. Of 1355 patients on a non-ICU inpatient floor and 485 pa

Investigating the safety and feasibility of osteopathic manipulative medicine in hospitalized children and adolescent young adults with cancer.

CONTEXT: Children and adolescents young adults (AYAs) undergoing treatment for oncologic diagnoses are frequently hospitalized and experience unwanted therapy-induced side effects that diminish quality of life. Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is a medical intervention that utilizes manual techniques to diagnose and treat body structures. Few studies have investigated the implementation of OMT in the pediatric oncology outpatient setting. To date, no studies have investigated the safety and feasibility of OMT in the pediatric oncology inpatient setting. OBJECTIVES: The objective of th
