Sexual Orientation Disparities in Early Adolescent Sleep: Findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine associations between sexual minority status (e.g., gay or bisexual) and sleep problems in a demographically diverse, national sample of U.S. early adolescents. Methods: We analyzed cross-sectional data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (Year 2, 2018-2020) to estimate associations between sexual orientation and sleep problems or disturbance, adjusting for confounders and testing potential mediators (depressive problems, stress problems, family conflict, and parental monitoring). Results: In a sample of 8563 adolescents 10- to

[Sexual development in childhood and adolescence].

Sex and gender are essential, inalienable characteristics of the human being permeating the biological, psychological, interpersonal, social, transcendental aspects of our existence. Human sexual development takes place in the context of physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development, beginning at conception and continuing throughout life. It is influenced by biological maturation and complex interactions of psychological, interpersonal, cultural factors and (physical) environmental conditions. Using a developmental-psychopathology approach, we summarise our under standing of the life

Development of spondylolytic olisthesis in adolescents.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Although it has been well documented that slippage in patients with spondylolysis is most prevalent during the growth period, the exact time when slippage initiates and halts during the growth period is still unknown. Moreover, the contribution of spinal deformities, such as wedging of the vertebral body to the slippage, remains controversial. PURPOSE: To clarify when slippage in pediatric spondylolysis initiates and halts. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. PATIENT SAMPLE: We radiographically examined 46 athletes under 18 years of age with spondylolysis at the fifth lum

Gender identity development in adolescence.

This article is part of a Special Issue "Puberty and Adolescence".This article aims to provide an outline of what is currently known on trajectories, and contributing factors to gender identity development in adolescence. We give a historical overview of the concept of gender identity, and describe general identity development in adolescence, gender identity development in the general population and in gender variant youth. Possible psychosocial (such as child and parental characteristics) and biological factors (such as the effects of prenatal exposure to gonadal hormones and the role of gene

On the development of nicotine dependence in adolescence.

Little is known about the natural history of drug dependence. This article describes the development and predictors of DSM-IV nicotine dependence in adolescence when tobacco use is initiated. In a two-stage design, a survey was administered to 6th-10th graders in the Chicago Public Schools to select a cohort of adolescents. Household interviews were conducted with adolescents five times and with one parent (predominantly mothers) three times over 2 years. The analytical sample includes 353 youths, who started using tobacco within 12 months preceding Wave 1 or between Waves 1-5. Survival analys

Adolescent eating autonomy survey development and exploratory factor analysis.

The development of autonomy over eating may impact nutrition-related disease risk, such as obesity and diabetes. Little is known about how eating autonomy develops throughout childhood and adolescence perhaps due to the absence of survey tools to measure adolescents eating autonomy behavioral engagement. This study developed and validated a comprehensive survey to evaluate adolescent eating autonomy using an iterative item development with content validity, expert review, and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). A sample of United States adolescents (n = 355; 12-17 years) completed surveys, incl

Prenatal nicotine sex-dependently alters adolescent dopamine system development.

Despite persistent public health initiatives, many women continue to smoke during pregnancy. Since maternal smoking has been linked to persisting sex-dependent neurobehavioral deficits in offspring, some consider nicotine to be a safer alternative to tobacco during pregnancy, and the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems is on the rise. We presently show, however, that sustained exposure to low doses of nicotine during fetal development, approximating plasma levels seen clinically with the nicotine patch, produces substantial changes in developing corticostriatal dopamine systems in adol

Examining the development and sexual behavior of adolescent males.

A careful examination of young men's sexuality by health professionals in pediatrics, primary care, and reproductive health is foundational to adolescent male sexual health and healthy development. Through a review of existing published data, this article provides background and a developmental framework for sexual health services for adolescent boys. The article first defines and provides an overview of adolescent boys' sexual health, and then discusses developmentally focused research on the following topics: (1) early romantic relationships and the evolution of power and influence within th

The influence of substance use on adolescent brain development.

Adolescence is a unique period in neurodevelopment. Alcohol and marijuana use are common. Recent research has indicated that adolescent substance users show abnormalities on measures of brain functioning, which is linked to changes in neurocognition over time. Abnormalities have been seen in brain structure volume, white matter quality, and activation to cognitive tasks, even in youth with as little as 1-2 years of heavy drinking and consumption levels of 20 drinks per month, especially if > 4-5 drinks are consumed on a single occasion. Heavy marijuana users show some subtle anomalies too, but

Adolescent smoking cessation: development of a school nurse intervention.

The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of a range of strategies to engage and to enhance secondary school nurse involvement in teenage smoking prevention and cessation. School nurses were willing to assist students to quit smoking, but they felt unprepared. Information provided by nurses involved in a three-stage review, pilot-testing, and trial design resulted in the development of a resource for nurses. This resource comprised individual student approaches (brief intervention based on motivational interviewing and written activities designed to help students examine their s

Puberty, sexual development and eating disorders in adolescent outpatients.

This study examined puberty and psychosexual state in a clinical sample of adolescents attending for assessment because of eating disorders (ED). A total of 57 adolescents (girls) aged 14-21 years (mean age 16.9 years) having either anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) were studied by semi-structured interviews and structured self-report questionnaires considering the timing of menarche, dating and attitudes to sexuality. The age at menarche did not differ statistically significantly between AN and BN. It was significantly lower in the BN group than in the normal population, but no st

Adolescent Mental Toughness Questionnaire (aMTQ10): development, validation and norms.

INTRODUCTION: Research has established that mental toughness (MT), the capacity to withstand stress and sustain performance under pressure, is affiliated with real-world outcomes such as psychological well-being and academic success. To balance the conceptual importance of MT with the practical constraints of assessing the construct within large test batteries, theorists developed the Mental Toughness Questionnaire 10 (MTQ10), an abridged 10-item version of the 48-item Mental Toughness Questionnaire (MTQ48). Despite using high school students in the development of the MTQ10, investigators fail

Continuous body temperature as a window into adolescent development.

Continuous body temperature is a rich source of information on hormonal status, biological rhythms, and metabolism, all of which undergo stereotyped change across adolescence. Due to the direct actions of these dynamic systems on body temperature regulation, continuous temperature may be uniquely suited to monitoring adolescent development and the impacts of exogenous reproductive hormones or peptides (e.g., hormonal contraception, puberty blockers, gender affirming hormone treatment). This mini-review outlines how traditional methods for monitoring the timing and tempo of puberty may be augme

Dignity of Risk in Adolescent Development: A Neuropsychological Perspective.

Although the notion of "dignity of risk" has primarily been used in reference to adolescents with disabilities, this concept can be applied to all adolescents, as parents and guardians are challenged by how to balance adolescents' need for self-determination with the need for safety and supervision. In the context of maturing cognitive and emotional neural circuits, normative adolescent development involves temporal shifts in social and environmental factors that are inherently associated with both higher risk-taking and opportunities for growth and new learning. The challenge for parents of b

Meaningful associations in the adolescent brain cognitive development study.

The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study is the largest single-cohort prospective longitudinal study of neurodevelopment and children's health in the United States. A cohort of n = 11,880 children aged 9-10 years (and their parents/guardians) were recruited across 22 sites and are being followed with in-person visits on an annual basis for at least 10 years. The study approximates the US population on several key sociodemographic variables, including sex, race, ethnicity, household income, and parental education. Data collected include assessments of health, mental health, subst

Mechanical Development of a Scalable Structure for Adolescent Exoskeletons.

Over the past decade, many medical lower limb exoskeletons have been developed and exploited. The advantage of such a systems is to ensure the mobility of paraplegic patients, as well as their physical rehabilitation. However, existing solutions have not been widely available among the disabled population, particularly adolescents, due to the limitations of their conception caused by the rapid physical growth and morphological variation of this population. In this paper, a new scalable structure of the exoskeleton is proposed as a feasible solution to the problem of morphological changes. As th

Development of a potential screening measure for adolescent depression.

OBJECTIVES: Few adolescent-specific depression screening instruments have been developed in recent years using multi-method approaches (qualitative and quantitative), and some of those available have limitations with an adolescent audience. We describe the development of a potential measure - the Taouk Scale for Adolescent Depression. METHODS: Draft items were informed by findings from focus groups and reviews by adolescents and healthcare professionals, resulting in a provisional 97-item scale. This was administered to a nation-wide sample of 3087 secondary students. Exploratory factor analy

Systematic review of prenatal cocaine exposure and adolescent development.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Previous research found that prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) may increase children's vulnerability to behavior and cognition problems. Maturational changes in brain and social development make adolescence an ideal time to reexamine associations. The objective was to conduct a systematic review of published studies examining associations between PCE and adolescent development (behavior, cognition/school outcomes, physiologic responses, and brain morphology/functioning). METHODS: Articles were obtained from PubMed, PsycInfo, Web of Science, and CINAHL databases through

Adolescent Ego-Development Trajectories and Young Adult Relationship Outcomes.

Adolescent ego-development trajectories were related to close-relationship outcomes in young adulthood. An adolescent sample completed annual measures of ego development from ages 14 through 17. The authors theoretically determined and empirically traced five ego-development trajectories reflecting stability or change. At age 25, the sample completed a close-relationship interview and consented for two peers to rate the participants'ego resiliency and hostility. Participants who followed the profound-arrest trajectory in adolescence reported more mundane sharing of experiences, more impulsive
