Transmission of infectious diseases from internationally adopted children to their adoptive families.

Internationally adopted children may suffer from different pathologies, including infectious diseases contracted in the country of origin. We evaluated the frequency of infectious diseases that may disseminate from adoptees to adoptive families on their arrival in France. All children who attended the clinic for international adoption in Clermont-Ferrand from January 2009 through to December 2011 were eligible for inclusion in the study. Standardized medical records dedicated to international adoption were retrospectively reviewed for demographic data, clinical diagnosis, and biological and ra…

Psychiatric disorders in the biological and adoptive families of adopted individuals with affective disorders.

To investigate the contribution of genetic and environmental factors in the etiology of mood disorders, a study was initiated to examine the frequency of psychiatric disorders in the biological and adoptive relatives of adult adoptees with mood disorders and in matched normal adoptees. Psychiatric evaluations of the relatives were made on the basis of independent blind diagnoses based on mental hospital and other official records. Analysis of the data showed an eightfold increase in unipolar depression among the biological relatives of the index cases and a 15-fold increase in suicide among th

Pre-placement screening in international adoption.

BACKGROUND: The number of child adoptions from abroad is increasing, but the adverse living conditions of these children prior to the adoption raise questions on their medical and neurodevelopmental status, particularly since there are no guidelines for pre- or post-adoption medical evaluation. OBJECTIVES: To describe the condition of a cohort of young children who were candidates for adoption in East European orphanages and foster homes, and to determine those attributes associated with a family's decision to adopt or refuse a particular child. METHODS: Eighty-two young children, median age…

Adoption studies: historical and methodological critique.

The history of adoption studies and their use in separating heredity from environmental influences is reviewed. The adoptee separation paradigm became possible through changing social practices which formalized adoption procedures. In the earlier past of this century, the technique was used principally to investigate the relative importance of heredity and environment in the determination of IQ. It was not until the sixties that the technique was used to study the role of heredity in psychopathology. Genetic factors in alcoholism, criminality, personality disorders, antisocial personality, som…

Adoption of Dexamethasone for Asthma Exacerbations.

BACKGROUND: Previous work has demonstrated that dexamethasone has similar efficacy to prednisolone/prednisone for the management of asthma e … d breakpoints in September 2013 and December 2015. During the 27-month period between these points, adoption of dexamethasone increased by 0.7% per month, (95% CI 0.6-0.9%). Dexamethasone was associated with a higher adjusted odds of return visit (1.07, 95% CI 1.03-1.11) and a lower adjusted odds of hospitalization within 7 days relative to prednisolone/pr …

MRI Catheterization: Ready for Broad Adoption.

In recent years, interventional cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (iCMR) has evolved from attractive theory to clinical routine at several centers. Real-time cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR fluoroscopy) adds value by combining soft-tissue visualization, concurrent hemodynamic measurement, and freedom from radiation. Clinical iCMR applications are expanding because of advances in catheter devices and imaging. In the near future, iCMR promises novel procedures otherwise unsafe under standalone X-Ray guidance.

Effectiveness of adoption-specific therapy on behavioral problems and attachment in adopted children and parental stress in adoptive families: A randomized controlled trial.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of Adoption-Specific Therapy (ADAPT), in improving outcomes among adoptive families in Iran. Thirty adoptive families were initially recruited, and 25 families who completed both pre- and post-test assessments with children aged 7 to 12 were randomly assigned to either the ADAPT group (n = 12) or a control group (n = 13). The ADAPT intervention included 34 sessions over 20 weeks (14 for the child, 14 for the parents, and 6 joint sessions), focusing on adoption-related issues, attachment, identity development, and the parent-child relationship. Post-test a…

Internalizing disorder in adopted versus non-adopted adults: a NESARC based study.

The objective of the study consisted of comparing lifetime prevalence rates and odds ratios of anxiety, mood, and psychotic disorders in ado … a, bipolar II disorder, panic disorder with agoraphobia, social phobia, and psychotic disorder. One adoption-specific risk factor was associated with lifetime mood disorder (i.e., Asian/Pacific Island). In conclusion, adoptees in a large sample from the general population had higher rates of mood and anxiety disorders compared to non-adoptees.

Parents' evaluation of adoption success: a follow-up study of intercountry and domestic adoptions.

Parents of 165 children adopted from Romania and 52 children adopted from within the United Kingdom rated the success of the adoptions when the children were 11 years old. As was the case at two earlier study waves, satisfaction was found to be extremely high. Both positive and negative assessments were generally stable between ages 6 and 11, although for the children who had more problems there was an increase in negative evaluation, albeit within an overall positive picture. Parents' evaluations were somewhat more negative for this group of children; however, parents reported that having the…

Adoption of Serogroup B Meningococcal Vaccine Recommendations.

UNLABELLED: : media-1vid110.1542/5799875076001PEDS-VA_2018-0344Video Abstract BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In 2015, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended that 16- to 23-year-olds may be vaccinated with the serogroup B meningococcal (MenB) vaccine on the basis of individual clinical decision-making (Category B). We assessed the following among US pediatricians and family physicians (FPs): (1) practices regarding MenB vaccine delivery, (2) factors influencing a decision to recommend the MenB vaccine, and (3) factors associated with discussing the MenB vaccine. Adoption in the age of reproductive technology.

The choice of adoption over genetic parenthood was investigated in 105 women retrospectively by questionnaire. Participants were divided into four groups: female/male subfertility; female subfertility; male subfertility; and female/male fertility. Half the sample (59/105) answered the question about the importance of a genetic link. Women who failed to adopt thought a genetic link was important, as did those who were less likely to disclose alternative reproductive conceptions to their child. First thoughts following diagnosis were more focused and actions more centered on adoption in the fema…

[Adoption and chronic hepatitis B carrier state].

AIM: Because there are few adoptable children in France, parents, for the last 20 years, have turned to international adoption. Alerted by the generally poor health of these children, we paid particular attention to their health problems and especially to infection by hepatitis B virus (HBV). POPULATION AND METHODS: The 60 internationally-adopted children seen from June 1993 to June 1997 were included in this study. All had hemogram and serum iron dosage, and search for intestinal parasites and tuberculosis was performed in each child, as were HBs antigen and HBs antibody screening. When HBs …

Open and closed adoption: a developmental conceptualization.

Given the annual increase in the multiple forms of adoptive practices within contemporary American society, research aimed at assessing the effects on the adoptees, their families, and the community of "open" versus "closed" adoption (communication versus no communication between biologic and adoptive parents) of healthy infants is sorely needed. Before this can be done, researchers and mental health professionals need to make sense of the myriad of findings in the adoption literature. With the goal of stimulating such research, the present article is comprised of: (a) a review of the contempo…
