A 15-year-old boy with a medical background of obesity, familial hyperlipidemia and acute recurrent pancreatitis, presented to emergency department reporting a 3-day course of periumbilical abdominal pain and nausea. This study compared 69 adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs) with 30 control college students on scales from the revised MMPI (MMPI-2). It has been suggested that polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) are required for the development of the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We investigated the occurrence of ARDS with acute respiratory failure in 30 children with severe neutropenia (less than 500 PMNs/mm3) who met the clinical diagnostic criteria for ARDS and in whom postmortem histopathology findings were available within 7 days of the onset of ARDS. The family histories of 140 children and adolescents with hyperactive child syndrome were compared with the family histories of 91 psychiatrically ill, age- and sex-matched patients who had a primary diagnosis other than hyperactive child syndrome. BACKGROUND: Visible strabismus has been shown to have adverse psychosocial consequences. It remains controversial if esotropia or exotropia is perceived more negatively. The aim of this study was to determine if esotropia or exotropia and the eye (side) in which strabismus is present are perceived differently. We also asked our adult participants: (1) if they thought visible strabismus should be corrected by surgery, (2) if they thought that strabismus surgery should only be to improve the cosmesis, and (3) if they thought that the surgery should be paid for by health insurance.
