BACKGROUND: The prevalence of culture negative infective endocarditis (IEC) is reported as 2-7% though this figure may be as high as 70% in developing countries.1 This higher rate will, at least in part, be due to reduced diagnostic facilities though some data suggests higher rates even when appropriate cultures were taken. The frequency is significantly elevated in patients who have already been exposed to antibiotics prior to blood cultures.1 , 2 A rare cause of culture negative IEC is the HACEK group of organisms that are normal habitants of the oropharyngeal flora and account for 1-3% of n

Aggregatibacter aphrophilus is an uncommon cause of vertebral infections and its complications are infrequently seen. We believe ours is the first reported case of scrotal abscess as a complication of vertebral osteomyelitis. We have also reviewed nine cases with complications similar to this report. Epidural abscess is the most commonly found complication, having been reported in six patients, followed closely by psoas abscess, which was seen in five patients. All except one patient underwent surgical drainage, with all patients showing complete resolution of infection.

Introduction. Despite the established pathogenicity of Aggregatibacter aphrophilus, few clinical cases have been described in published literature. A. aphrophilus is a rare cause of prosthetic valve endocarditis and diagnosis is challenging based on nonspecific symptoms on presentation. High clinical suspicion for infective endocarditis is warranted in patients with cardiac prosthetic material and positive blood cultures. Poor dentition and dental procedures, along with other risk factors, are associated with A. aphrophilus bacteraemia. We describe a case of A. aphrophilus bacteraemia in which

Aggregatibacter aphrophilus is part of the normal flora in the oropharynx and upper respiratory tract, which causes invasive bacteremia in rare cases. However, the culture and identification of Aggregatibacter aphrophilus are challenging, hence easily misdiagnosed or undetected in clinical practice. In this case, a 73-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital with a fever and right hip pain. Routine blood and C-reactive protein tests showed abnormal inflammatory markers. Positive blood culture revealed the presence of Aggregatibacter aphrophilus through mass spectrometry. The computed

This report describes the case of a previously healthy nine-year-old girl who developed a left temporal lobe brain abscess following spontaneous exfoliation of a healthy deciduous tooth. She presented in convulsive status epilepticus without fever or focal neurological symptoms, and the initial MRI revealed a ring-enhancing lesion with adjacent dural inflammation. Surgical drainage and intravenous antibiotic therapy led to a full recovery with no neurological sequelae after six weeks of treatment. Pus culture revealed Streptococcus intermedius and Aggregatibacter aphrophilus, both of which are

BACKGROUND: Aggregatibacter aphrophilus (A. aphrophilus) is a rare cause of infective endocarditis (IE), but is a recognized cause of culture-negative IE. The risk of developing IE is increased in patients with valvular disease or prosthetic valves. To our knowledge, A. aphrophilus has never previously been reported to cause lumbar facet joint arthritis in combination with IE.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the first case where facet joint arthritis was the presenting symptom for culture-negative A. aphrophilus native valve IE in a patient with no prior cardiac disease. A 58-year-old Japanese

Aggregatibacter aphrophilus and Beta haemolytic Streptococci Lancefield group F are part of the normal oral flora and are known to cause endocarditis, sinusitis, empyema, meningitis and septic arthritis. They are now emerging as a cause of brain abscess particularly in patients with congenital heart diseases. We report a case of a 10-year-old boy with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), who presented with fever, headache and drowsiness. Culture yielded the growth of Aggregatibacter aphrophilus and Beta hemolytic streptococci Lancefield group F. He became clinically stable after treatment with ceftriaxo

Bacterial translocation from normal oral flora, such as Aggregatibacter spp., can rarely lead to endocarditis, bloodstream infections, and abscesses. We present a case of an immunocompetent active duty service member with a hepatic abscess from a presumed routine dental hygiene cleaning with Aggregatibacter kilianii bacteremia. Aggregatibacter kilianii is a relatively novel species, closely related to the well-reported Aggregatibacter aphrophilus but genetically distinct. This appears to be one of the first described cases of a hepatic abscess caused by this species.

We retrospectively examined medical records of 87 patients with bacteraemia caused by members of the HACEK group (Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Aggregatibacter aphrophilus, Aggregatibacter paraphrophilus, Cardiobacterium spp., Eikenella corrodens and Kingella spp.) to determine whether endocarditis was present, as defined by the Duke criteria. The overall positive predictive value (PPV) of HACEK bacteraemia for endocarditis was 60 %. The PPV varied with different HACEK species from 0 % (E. corrodens) to 100 % (A. actinomycetemcomitans).

INTRODUCTION: Septic arthritis by Aggregatibacter aphrophilus is an uncommon entity, so it's important to diagnose it early, to avoid serious consequences. In adults, the knee is the most affected site.
METHODS: We present a case of a 17-year-old boy, with pain in the left knee since one month ago. It shows an increase in local temperature, erythema and movement inability. A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was performed and empirical treatment was given with cephalothin and clindamycin. A knee arthrotomy was realized, and intramedullary secretion and bone tissue was sent to study.

BACKGROUND: The bacterial genus Aggregatibacter was categorized in 2006 to accommodate the former Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Haemophilus aphrophilus, and H. segnis species. Aggregatibacter kilianii is a normal resident of the human upper respiratory tract but can also cause serious infections. A. kilianii is relatively newly identified and has been isolated from conjunctivitis, wounds, abdominal abscesses, and blood.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old female patient with distal common bile duct cancer was admitted to our hospital with sudden loss of consciousness and general weaknes

INTRODUCTION: Bacteria of genus Aggregatibacter vary with respect to dependence on exogenous nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). The genus is incompletely resolved, as 20% of deposited Aggregatibacter genome sequences do not belong to named species.
METHODS: We performed phenotypic analysis of the four named Aggregatibacter species plus four additional genomospecies, and bioinformatics analysis of 282 genomes; 237 of these genomes represent cultured isolates.
RESULTS: Independence of NAD is ubiquitous in genomospecies related to Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, common in Aggregati

By using NGS-sequencing libraries of DNA from periodontal swabs with primers specific to V6 region of 16S rDNA prevalence of bacterial genera and species in periodontal and colonic microbiota of patients with periodontitis of different severity and healthy donors was analyzed. Hyper-colonization of the colon with Akkermansia muciniphila was found to be the most important maker of negative predisposition to periodontitis (t=133,7 at р=10(-6)). This result is in a good agreement with communications about positive impact of hyper-colonization of the colon with this species on type 2 diabetes, obe

BACKGROUND: Chronic airway disease (CAD) is characterized by chronic airway inflammation and colonization of the lungs by pro-inflammatory pathogens. However, while various other bacterial species are present in the lower airways, it is not fully understood how they influence inflammation. We aimed to identify novel anti-inflammatory species present in lower airway samples of patients with CAD.
METHODS: Paired sputum microbiome and inflammatory marker data of adults with CAD across three separate cohorts (Australian asthma and bronchiectasis, Scottish bronchiectasis) was analyzed using Linear

BACKGROUND: The HACEK group comprises Haemophilus spp., Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Cardiobacterium hominis, Eikenella corrodens, and Kingella kingae, are Gram-negative bacteria that are slow-growing and fastidious. These organisms are common causes of culture-negative endocarditis. However, brain abscesses caused by Haemophilus aphrophilus and E. corrodens have been rarely reported. The case we describe, which was promptly identified and successfully treated, will be meaningful for the diagnosis and treatment of such infectious diseases.

UNLABELLED: Haemophilus and Aggregatibacter are two of the most common bacterial genera in the human oral cavity, encompassing both commensals and pathogens of substantial ecological and medical significance. In this study, we conducted a metapangenomic analysis of oral Haemophilus and Aggregatibacter species to uncover genomic diversity, phylogenetic relationships, and habitat specialization within the human oral cavity. Using three metrics-pangenomic gene content, phylogenomics, and average nucleotide identity (ANI)-we first identified distinct species and sub-species groups among these gene

Growing evidence suggests that oral infections can modify the course of systemic diseases. To date, epidemiological data on microbial oral infections are scarce. Here, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the trend and microbial diversity in oral infection specimens referred for clinical microbiology analysis from 2010 to 2020. The microbes were isolated by culture and were identified via matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry technology (MALDI-TOF MS) throughout the study period. A total of 1,014 referred samples from dental clinics in Stockholm Count

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO), a prevalent bone disease triggered by estrogen deficiency - induced bone mass reduction and deterioration of bone tissue microarchitecture, escalates the risk of fragility fractures. Recent research has highlighted the pivotal role of oral and gut microbiota in PMO development, giving rise to the "oral - gut - bone axis" concept.
METHODS: A total of 21 postmenopausal women, aged 50 - 60, were recruited for the study. Based on bone mineral density (BMD) measurements from dual - energy X - ray absorptiometry (DXA), participants were divided into os
