Arterial Stiffness in Aging: Does It Have a Place in Clinical Practice?: Recent Advances in Hypertension.

Aortic stiffness increases markedly with age and is associated with excess risk for various adverse clinical outcomes, including heart disease, dementia, and kidney disease. Although evidence for adverse effects of aortic stiffening is overwhelming, integration of direct and indirect measures of aortic stiffness into routine clinical assessment has lagged behind the science. This brief review will examine recent evidence supporting the value of stiffness as an important new risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular disease and will offer suggestions for incorporating stiffness measures i

Understanding deinstitutionalization policies for older adults through sarcopenia and the place of aging in Spain.

To support deinstitutionalization policies in Spain, it's useful to understand sarcopenia determinants. This study analyzed 267 community-dwelling and institutionalized older adults, measured sarcopenia using the European Working Group of Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2) algorithm and looked for the role of place of aging among a set of social, economic, psychological and environmental variables. Findings reveal that the place of aging might have a significant relationship with sarcopenia in Spanish older adults and that a large proportion of older adults with sarcopenia could end up liv

Older women's experiences of companion animal death: impacts on well-being and aging-in-place.

BACKGROUND: Companion animal death is a common source of grief, although the extent and context of that grief is poorly understood, especially in older adulthood. The aim of this multiple-methods study was to develop a greater understanding of the impact of companion animal death on older women living alone in the community, as older women are a distinct at-risk group, and the supports that should be available to help these individuals with their grief. METHODS: Participants were recruited from across Alberta, a Canadian province, through seniors' organizations, pet rescue groups, and social

[Willingness to age in place and anosognosia of risks in Alzheimer's disease].

Alzheimer's disease leads to an alteration of decision-making abilities which may increase risk-taking behaviours, particularly associated anosognosia. Anticipating the progression of the disease raises a number of questions, particularly in relation to aging in place. Our qualitative study aimed to identify the arguments used by older patients with Alzheimer's disease when choosing a place to age. The study included 22 older adults, living at home, and diagnosed as mild dementia. The patients' arguments in favour of ageing in place were based mainly on the preservation of internal security, t…

"There's no place like home, but…": dependent older adults' narratives on the health and well-being limits of ageing in place.

BACKGROUND: In ageing societies, understanding the lived experiences of dependent older adults is essential for designing care policies that support health, dignity, and well-being. While ageing in place is widely promoted, less is known about how dependent older adults themselves define its limits. AIM: This study examines how dependent older adults describe the conditions under which ageing in place supports-or undermines- their dignity and quality of life. METHODS: We conducted 30 in-depth interviews with individuals aged 65 and older in Barcelona, Spain, all officially recognized as havi

[Peer-advice for aging in place: An exploratory study on the perspectives of community-dwelling older adults].

The number of older people ageing in place is growing, and support for this population group is declining. To reduce the pressure on elderly care and to guarantee the quality of care for older people, new solutions for support are needed. Peer-advice for ageing in place could contribute to this. The aim of this study is to explore the perspectives of older people on peer-advice to support ageing in place. Two complementary research methods were used: a questionnaire of 263 older people and five focus groups with 35 older people in total. Descriptive and thematic analyses resulted in three main

"Fiercely independent": Experiences of aging in the right place of older women living alone with physical limitations.

This study explores the experience of aging among older Canadian women with physical limitations who live by themselves. While aging in place has been a policy priority in rapidly greying Canada, a lack of complementary public supports poses challenges for many older adults and their family members. Employing a qualitative methodology, and drawing from the notion of aging in the right place, we collected personal narratives of 12 women (aged 65 to 92) in two geographic areas in Ontario, including residents of regular houses, apartments, condominiums, assisted living and community housing for s…

Optimizing mobility in later life: the role of the urban built environment for older adults aging in place.

Hazards in the urban built environment can create barriers to mobility among older adults aging in place. We investigated the relationship between urban built environment characteristics and 15-month trajectories of mobility disability in a sample of 1,188 older adults living in Detroit, MI, a city that has undergone rapid economic and structural decline. Data come from the Michigan Minimum Data Set for Home Care (2001-2008), an enumerative database of older adults in Michigan who qualify for federal or state-funded home and community-based long-term care through a Medicaid waiver program. Sta…

Who prefers to age in place? Cross-sectional survey of middle-aged people in Japan.

AIM: Preference for aging in place among middle-aged people is an important element in estimating the future needs for community services of disabled older adults. Drawing on Litwak and Longino's typologies of relocation, the present study investigated the characteristics of middle-aged adults who prefer to age in place and those who prefer to move, at two levels of disability: being unable to walk alone and being bedridden. METHODS: In the present cross-sectional study, an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire was sent to 2500 community-dwelling adults aged 40-64 years. RESULTS: If una…

Facilitating aging in place: A qualitative study of practical problems preventing people with dementia from living at home.

Although the majority of people with dementia wish to age in place, they are particularly susceptible to nursing home admission. Nurses can … d decreased self-reliance (e.g. problems regarding self-care, lack of day structure). To facilitate aging in place and/or to delay institutionalization, nurses in community-based dementia care should focus on assessing problems within those three domains and offer potential solutions.
