How Could Agroecological Markets Support Healthier Diets in Urban and Periurban Areas for Low-Income Women? A Case Study of Dakar, Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Agroecology is a holistic approach that draws on ecological and social justice principles. Although there is evidence that agroecological practices can improve food security and nutrition for rural households, there is less research in urban areas. OBJECTIVES: This exploratory study in Dakar, Senegal, asks: how could agroecological markets support healthier diets in urban and periurban areas for low-income consumers? METHODS: Four market initiatives were studied that were urban/periurban, sold agroecological food products, and had low-income consumers. Three focus groups were hel…

Seroprevalence of foot-and-mouth disease and its association with animal-level and agroecological factors in cattle around Massif Bale Mountain, Ethiopia.

BACK GROUND: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) poses a significant economic threat to livestock producers because of its highly contagious nature. This study aimed to determine FMD seroprevalence and identify associated risk factors in cattle across districts surrounding the Massif Bale Mountain in Ethiopia. From May to June 2024, a cross-sectional study was conducted in which 1073 cattle serum samples were collected and tested for FMD virus nonstructural protein (NSP) antibodies. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to identify factors associated with seroprevalence, including sex, age, b

Characterization of Nutritional and Bioactive Compound in Three Genotypes of Mashua (Tropaeolum tuberosum Ruiz and Pavón) from Different Agroecological Areas in Puno.

Bioactive compounds and nutritional characterization in three genotypes of mashua tubers (Tropaeolum tuberosum Ruiz and Pavón) from different agroecological areas of the Peruvian highlands (3747 at 3888 meters above sea level) were studied. The studied genotypes from different agroecological areas significantly differed for vitamins, amino acids, and bioactive compounds. However, the nutritional characteristics of yellow, purple, and yellow-purple mashua remained unaffected. Its tubers were shown to be important sources of protein and fiber. The nutritional analysis revealed high phosphorus an

Co-Expression Modules and Core Regulatory Factors Linked to Maize Abiotic Stress Resistance Under the Compound Agroecological Stress Index in Southwest China.

Regionally, compound agroecological stress arising from both natural and anthropogenic emergy inputs may influence maize transcriptomic responses; however, evidence across multiple scales remains limited. We developed a reproducible five-step framework integrating a macro-level compound stress index, molecular response modules, cross-scale coupling, spatial continuity, and independent field validation. Nine variables (emergy indicators ELR, Fn, and NEYR; climate; soil; and terrain) were PCA-weighted into a Composite Abiotic Stress Intensity Index (CASI; first three PCs = 83.7%; and prefecture-

Perception of smallholder farmers about climate change and its impacts on crop production across agroecological zones of the Gassera District, Southeastern Ethiopia.

Climate change and variability have threatened rainfed agriculture by affecting the livelihoods of rural communities in Ethiopia. The study … f significance. The findings revealed that the greatest crop yield loss was associated with lowland agroecology. The MLR results revealed that farmer agroecology, age, sex, and chemical use had substantial impacts on crop yield loss. We urge farmers to understand the long-term effects of climate change on their livelihoods.

How agroecological transition can jeopardize compliance with Protected Designation of Origin specifications: A living lab case study in Fourme de Montbrison cheese.

Agroecological transition has recently emerged as a key strategy to help address changing climate and societal demands, but little is known about its effect on animal-derived products, including in Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) dairy products. A case in point is Fourme de Montbrison (FM) PDO cheese, a blue-type cheese from the French Massif Central, where an ongoing farm agroecological transition project (switching cows to a pasture-based diet and switching from Holstein to Montbéliarde breed) led to an increase in the rate of low fat in DM content nonconformities in the cheese. The ai

β-Casein Polymorphism as a Potential Evolutionary Trade-Off: The Rise of A1 Under Intensive Selection and Its Implications for Gastrointestinal Tolerance and Agroecological Resilience.

This narrative review summarizes evidence on the bovine β-casein (CSN2) A1/A2 polymorphism as a case study of how intensive dairy selection and global gene flow can reshape allele frequencies in ways that matter for consumers, processing and agroecological resilience. We draw together evidence from (i) population-genetic surveys of CSN2 in contrasting cattle populations, including a descriptive summary of published genotype-frequency studies; (ii) controlled human studies that separate A1-containing from A2-only dairy exposure; and (iii) dairy technology and the authenticity literature relevan

El Niño and La Niña differentially drive transmission dynamics of the small ruminant parasite Haemonchus contortus across agroecological zones in Southern Africa.

The El Niño La Niña Southern Oscillation (ENSO) exerts a significant influence on agroecological environments and plays a crucial role in influencing crop productivity, yet its impact on animal diseases has been largely overlooked, despite the evident impact of climate on disease transmission. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of ENSO on the transmission potential (Q0) of Haemonchus contortus (H. contortus) across agroecological zones (AEZs) in southern Africa across the region's typical rainy season (November-April). Key results indicate that stronger El Niño events can significantly de

Impacts of farming practices on pig gut microbiota and their interactions with soil microbial communities in tropical agroecosystems.

Livestock farming systems are associated with differences microbial communities in both animals and soils, yet the ecological mechanisms linking these compartments remain poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of contrasting farming systems (intensive vs. agroecological) on the gut microbiota of Creole pigs and associated soil microbial communities in farms located in Guadeloupe (French West Indies). Fecal and soil samples were analyzed using 16S and 18S Ribosomal Ribonucleic Acid (rRNA) genes metabarcoding to characterize bacterial, archaeal and fungal diversity. Pig gut micro

The ecoepidemiology of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical skin disease. In Ethiopia, CL is a public health concern; about 29 million people are at risk, with an estimated incidence of up to 50,000 new cases annually. In endemic communities, access to diagnosis, treatment, and prevention is crucial but often limited. Understanding the prevalence and access to care, as well as exploring its relationship to agroecological factors, is crucial to inform control strategies. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work is to estimate the pooled prevalence, access to care service facilities, and spatial d

Soil Biodiversity Supports Agroecosystem Services Under Multiple Global Change Factors.

Cereals are the key staple foods supporting a growing population under global change. Soil biodiversity sustains ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) that underpins food production and soil agroecosystem services. Yet, the capacity of soil biodiversity to support EMF in cereal fields under multiple global change factors (GCFs) remains virtually unknown. Here, we conducted a field mesocosm experiment involving wheat, four levels of soil biodiversity, and up to eight distinct GCFs (warming, drought, salinity, heavy metals, nitrogen addition, microplastics, pesticides, and alkalinization) to invest

Fifteen-year stability of soil organic carbon in Pampas agroecosystems: evidence from georeferenced paired-site resampling using equivalent soil mass.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in the Pampas Region of Argentina declined substantially during the second half of the twentieth century, primarily due to land-use change and low-residue agricultural systems. Recent process-based simulations have suggested that the widespread adoption of no-till practices, increased crop productivity, and more diversified rotations may have halted these losses and shifted regional systems toward a new equilibrium. However, empirical validation at regional scale remains limited. We conducted a georeferenced paired-site resampling of 40 agricultural sites origi

Organic-Microbial Strategies for Iron and Zinc Biofortification in Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.].

Orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) is widely promoted in sub-Saharan Africa, including Senegal, for its contribution to vitamin A deficiency mitigation. However, its potential to improve mineral nutrition remains limited by low iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) concentrations and their restricted bioavailability, which may contribute to persistent micronutrient deficiencies affecting 42% of children under 5 years and 37% of women of reproductive age in Senegal. In this context, organic waste products (OWPs) and microbial inocula (MIs) represent promising agroecological alternatives to conventional ferti

Prevalence and determinants of stunting and anaemia in children aged 6-23 months: A multilevel analysis from rural Ethiopia.

Low- and middle-income countries shoulder the greatest burden of stunting and anaemia in children. This calls for prompt and effective intervention measures, while the contributing factors are not fully understood. This study evaluates determinants spanning from individual-, household- and community levels including agroecology and antinutrients as unique sets of predictors. Primary data were collected from 660 rural households representing the midland (ML), highland, and upper highland (UHL) agroecological zones from northern Ethiopia. The study relates several predictors to stunting and anae…
