Target and nontarget screening of PFAS in drinking water for a large-scale survey of urban and rural communities in Québec, Canada.

Limited monitoring data are available regarding the occurrence of emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water. Here, we validated an analytical procedure for 42 PFAS with individual detection limits of 0.001-0.082 ng/L. We also evaluated how different sample pH conditions, dechlorinating agents, and storage holding times might affect method performance. PFAS were analyzed in tap water samples collected at a large spatial scale in Quebec, Canada, covering 376 municipalities within 17 administrative regions. Target and nontarget screening revealed the presence of 31 and

Sulfonated Polyimide Membranes Constructed by Main-Chain and Molecular-Network Engineering Strategy for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell.

Excessive swelling is one important factor that leads to high fuel permeability and limited operating concentration of methanol for proton exchange membranes. Herein, a collaborative strategy of main-chain and molecular-network engineering is applied to lower swelling ratio and improve methanol resistance for highly sulfonated polyimide. Two m-phenylenediamine monomers (4-(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-vinylphenoxy)benzene-1,3-diamine and 4,6-bis(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-vinylphenoxy)benzene-1,3-diamine) with tetrafluorostyrol groups are designed and synthesized. Two series of cross-linked sulfonated pol

Assessment of perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS)-related compounds degradation potential: Computational and experimental approaches.

Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) and PFHxS-related compounds are listed in Annex A of the Stockholm Convention without specific exemptions. Substances that potentially degrade to PFHxS are considered as their related compounds. Unfortunately, the degradation behavior of PFHxS precursors, an important basis for the corresponding chemical regulation, remains unclear. Herein, based on the hypothesis that bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE) is the determining factor for the degradation of PFHxS precursors, the BDE of PFHxS-related precursors to produceC6F13SO2-groups was calculated. In addition,

Gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and gestational diabetes mellitus after high exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances from drinking water in Ronneby, Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Leakage of fire-fighting foam from an airfield caused contamination of the drinking water supplied to a third of the population in Ronneby, resulting in very high serum levels of predominantly perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS). The results of studies investigating the association between exposure to perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) and pregnancy complications are inconsistent, and studies at high exposures of PFOS and PFHxS are lacking. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between exposure to high levels of PFAS and gestational hype

6:2 Chlorinated Polyfluoroalkyl Ether Sulfonates Exert Stronger Thyroid Homeostasis Disruptive Effects in Newborns than Perfluorooctanesulfonate: Evidence Based on Bayesian Benchmark Dose Values from a Population Study.

Growing toxicologic evidence suggests that emerging perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), like chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonate (Cl-PFESA), may be as toxic or more toxic than perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). However, further investigations are needed in terms of the human health risk assessment. This study examined the effects of emerging and legacy PFAS exposure on newborn thyroid homeostasis and compared the thyroid disruption caused by 6:2 Cl-PFESA and PFOS using a benchmark dose approach. The health effects of mixture and individual exposure were e

Evaluation of the Effect of Perfluorohexane Sulfonate on the Proliferation of Human Liver Cells.

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) is a widely detected replacement for legacy long-chain perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment and human blood samples. Its potential toxicity led to its recent classification as a globally regulated persistent organic pollutant. Although animal studies have shown a positive association between PFHxS levels and hepatic steatosis and hepatocellular hypertrophy, the link with liver toxicity, including end-stage liver cancer, remains inconclusive. In this study, we examined the effects of PFHxS on the proliferation of Hep3B (human hepatocellular carci

Chlorinated Polyfluorinated Ether Sulfonates and Thyroid Hormone Levels in Adults: Isomers of C8 Health Project in China.

Chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonates (Cl-PFESAs) are one kind of replacement chemistry for perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS). Recent studies have shown that Cl-PFESAs could interfere with thyroid function in animal models. However, epidemiological evidence on the link between Cl-PFESAs and thyroid function remains scarce. In this study, we focused on two representative legacy perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including PFOS and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and two PFOS alternatives (6:2 and 8:2 Cl-PFESAs) in the general adult population from a cross-sectional study, the "Isomers of C8

Bioaccumulation and trophic magnification of emerging and legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in a St. Lawrence River food web.

Research on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in freshwater ecosystems has focused primarily on legacy compounds and little is still known on the presence of emerging PFAS. Here, we investigated the occurrence of 60 anionic, zwitterionic, and cationic PFAS in a food web of the St. Lawrence River (Quebec, Canada) near a major metropolitan area. Water, sediments, aquatic vegetation, invertebrates, and 14 fish species were targeted for analysis. Levels of perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) in river water exceeded those of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and

Immunotoxicity mechanisms of perfluorinated compounds PFOA and PFOS.

Perfluorinated and polyfluorinated compounds (PFASs) are a class of synthetic chemical substances that are widely used in human production and life, such as fire-fighting foams, textiles and clothing, surfactants, and surface protective agents. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are the most abundant and common perfluorinated compounds in biota and humans. Currently, PFOA and PFOS have been listed in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, and their production has been halted in many countries. However, because the high-energy carbon-fluor

Confirming sulfluramid (EtFOSA) application as a precursor of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) in Brazilian agricultural soils.

Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) is a manmade chemical with several industrial applications and also a potential byproduct of many other per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) in the environment. Due to the gathered evidence on its environmental persistence, long-range transport, toxicity, and bioaccumulative and biomagnifying properties, PFOS, its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF), were listed for global restriction under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in 2009. Nevertheless, Brazil has granted an acceptable purpose exemption for using PFOSF

Biological reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene to ethylene under methanogenic conditions.

A biological process for remediation of groundwater contaminated with tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE) can only be applied if the transformation products are environmentally acceptable. Studies with enrichment cultures of PCE- and TCE-degrading microorganisms provide evidence that, under methanogenic conditions, mixed cultures are able to completely dechlorinate PCE and TCE to ethylene, a product which is environmentally acceptable. Radiotracer studies with [14C]PCE indicated that [14C]ethylene was the terminal product; significant conversion to 14CO2 or 14CH4 was not obse

Taurine reduction in anaerobic respiration of Bilophila wadsworthia RZATAU.

Organosulfonates are important natural and man-made compounds, but until recently (T. J. Lie, T. Pitta, E. R. Leadbetter, W. Godchaux III, and J. R. Leadbetter. Arch. Microbiol. 166:204-210, 1996), they were not believed to be dissimilated under anoxic conditions. We also chose to test whether alkane- and arenesulfonates could serve as electron sinks in respiratory metabolism. We generated 60 anoxic enrichment cultures in mineral salts medium which included several potential electron donors and a single organic sulfonate as an electron sink, and we used material from anaerobic digestors in com

Sulfur is in the Air: Cyanolichen Marriages and Pollution.

Cyanolichens are symbiotic organisms involving cyanobacteria and fungi (bipartite) or with the addition of an algal partner (tripartite). Cyanolichens are known for their heightened susceptibility to environmental pollution. We focus here on the impacts on cyanolichens due to rising air pollution; we are especially interested in the role of sulfur dioxide on cyanolichen biology. Cyanolichens due to air pollution including sulfur dioxide exposure, show symptomatic changes including degradation of chlorophyll, lipid membrane peroxidation, decrease in ATP production, changes in respiration rate,

Association between perfluoroalkyl substances exposure and the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in the different sexes: a study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2018.

There is evidence that perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have effects on liver toxicity, and the effects may exhibit sex differences. Our study aims to explore the association between exposure to four PFASs (perfluorooctanoic acid, PFOA; perfluorooctane sulfonate, PFOS; perfluorohexane sulfonate, PFHxS; and perfluorononanoate, PFNA) and the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in adults ≥ 20 years old in the US population. The data were based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018. We used Poisson regression to explore the association between the

Improving medium chain carboxylic acid production by controlling microbial competition with 2-bromoethanesulfonate.

Suppressing the growth of unwanted microorganisms that potentially compete with chain elongation (CE) cultures is essential for enhanced medium chain carboxylic acid (MCCA) production. This study examines the effects of 2-bromoethanesulfonate (BES) supplementation in a defined media containing ethanol and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and complex media containing green waste on CE performance. Two types of inoculums were employed: an anaerobic digestate (AD) derived from manure fiber and a mixed chain-elongating (MC) culture dominated with Clostridium sensu stricto 12. Results show that ethanol

Novel Insights into the Distribution and Effects of Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) in the Nervous System of a Frog Tadpole Model by Mass Spectrometry Imaging.

Determining how environmental contaminants localize within tissues is essential for understanding the consequences of sublethal exposures. Therefore, we optimized a mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) workflow to study the distribution and biological effects of contaminants in an environmentally relevant frog tadpole model. We applied the method to the entire tadpole head postexperimental exposure to the legacy contaminant, perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS; 0.1-100 μg/L, 48 h). At 10 μg/L, PFOS unexpectedly localized mainly to the olfactory epithelium. At 100 μg/L, PFOS was distributed throughou

Multiomic Landscape of Primary Hypothyroidism Induced by Subchronic Exposure to Low-Dose Novel PFOS Substitute OBS in Human and Murine Models.

Sodium p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzenesulfonate (OBS) as a novel surrogate for perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) has been extensively utilized in industrial manufacturing and daily life. However, studies on OBS-induced environmental health risks of obstructive biosynthesis (OBS) are currently limited, particularly the risk for thyroid diseases. Following the construction of in vivo (mouse) and in vitro (normal human primary thyrocytes) models of subchronic low-dose OBS exposure, we explored the thyroid-disrupting effects of OBS through multiomics approaches and experimental validations. Hepatotoxic response of perfluorooctane sulfonamide (PFOSA) in early life stage zebrafish (Danio rerio) is greater than perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS).

Perfluorooctane sulfonamide (PFOSA), a typical perfluorooctane sulfonate precursor (PreFOS), has been detected in the aquatic environment globally. However, the effects of PFOSA at levels measured in the environment have not been well characterized in aquatic organisms. In this study, we evaluated the transcriptional, biochemical, histopathological, and morphological effects of PFOSA to characterize the underlying mechanisms of toxicity by using a universal model in aquatic ecotoxicology, zebrafish (Danio rerio). Transcriptional changes in PFOSA-exposed zebrafish predicted hepatic fibrosis and
