Child and provider restraints in ambulances: knowledge, opinions, and behaviors of emergency medical services providers.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 16,000 children are transported by ambulances each day, and there are an estimated 4,500 ambulance crashes each year. Information about emergency medical services (EMS) provider knowledge, opinions, and behaviors regarding occupant restraint is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To measure the knowledge, opinions, and behaviors of EMS personnel regarding child and provider restraint use in ambulances. METHODS: A survey was given to all EMS providers in two large ambulance-service organizations and in a hospital-based pediatric ambulance service in a midsized urban area. RESULTS:…

Ambulance Traffic Crashes in Japan: Characteristics of Casualties and Efforts to Improve Ambulance Safety.

BACKGROUND: An ambulance traffic crash not only leads to injuries among emergency medical service (EMS) professionals but also injures patients or their companions during transportation. We aimed to describe the incidence of ambulance crashes, seating location, seatbelt use for casualties (ie, both fatal and nonfatal injuries), ambulance safety efforts, and to identify factors affecting the number of ambulance crashes in Japan. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide survey of all fire departments in Japan. The survey queried each fire department about the number of ambulance crashes between Janua

Patient experience of severe acute dyspnoea and relief during treatment in ambulances: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Acute dyspnoea is common among ambulance patients, but little is known of the patients' experience of symptom. We aimed to investigate ambulance patients initial perceived intensity of acute dyspnoea, and whether they experienced relief during prehospital treatment. Furthermore, to investigate the validity and feasibility of using a subjective dyspnoea score in the ambulance, and its association with objectively measured vital signs. METHODS: We performed a prospective observational study in the North Denmark Region from 1. July 2017 to 30. March 2019. We studied patients over the

Emergency obstetric referral in rural Sierra Leone: what can motorbike ambulances contribute? A mixed-methods study.

Giving birth remains a dangerous endeavour for many of the world's women. Progress to improve this has been slow in sub-Saharan Africa. The second delay, where transport infrastructure is key in allowing a woman to reach care, has been a relatively neglected field of study. Six eRanger motorbike ambulances, specifically engineered for use on poor roads in resource-poor situations were provided in 2006 as part of an emergency referral system in rural Sierra Leone. The aim of this study was to evaluate the implementation of this referral system in terms of its use, acceptability and accessibilit…

POSAiDA: presence of Staphylococcus aureus/MRSA and Enterococcus/VRE in Danish ambulances. A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Every year approximately one out of ten Danish patients contracts a healthcare associated infection (HAI). Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus are prominent in the group of pathogenic bacteria that underlie HAIs, causing unnecessary inconvenience and prolonging hospitalization. Bacterial colonization often occurs due to indirect patient-to-patient transmission, caused by poor hygiene compliance. This study aims to determine the level of contamination with S. aureus/MRSA and Enterococcus/VRE on presumed clean blood pressure cuffs in the Danish ambulances. METHOD: Blood pressure …

Amputation: energy cost of ambulation.

A mobile instrument system was used to measure energy consumption by indirect calorimetry at rest and during ambulation in 25 unimpaired subjects, 6 unilateral below-knee (BK) amputee patients, 6 unilateral above-knee (AK) amputee patients and 4 bilateral AK amputee patients. To prevent the introduction of gait difficulties among the impaired subjects, each subject was permitted to walk at his own comfortable speed. Since speed thus varied among subjects, ambulation data were expressed in units of energy per foot traveled. Statistical analyses of the mean oxygen costs indicated several signifi

Ambulation of the braced myelomeningocele patient.

Sixty-eight patients born with a myelomeningocele were studied in the second and third decades of their lives. All of them had had some orthopaedic surgery, an orthotic program, and other specialized medical and paramedical services. In the group with sacral-level lesions, half were community ambulators; in the group with lower lumbar lesions, a third; in the group with upper lumbar lesions, a tenth; and in the group with thoracic-level lesions, none. The most important factors that determine the ambulatory status of a child with myelomeningocele, besides the level of the lesion, are the motor

Ambulance traffic accidents in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Ambulance traffic accidents (ATAs) are the leading cause of occupation-related fatalities among emergency medical service (EMS) personnel. We aim to use the Taiwan national surveillance system to analyze the characteristics of ATAs and to assist EMS directors in developing policies governing ambulance operations. METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional and largely descriptive study was conducted using Taiwan national traffic accidents surveillance data from January 1, 2011 to October 31, 2016. RESULTS: Among the 1,627,217 traffic accidents during the study period, 715 A

Maternal ambulation during labor.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe the recent advances in labor epidural analgesia, which may have an impact on maternal ambulation during labor. RECENT FINDINGS: With the advent of new epidural adjuvant drugs and new epidural delivery systems, we are now able to use very low concentration local anesthetic solutions with a reduction in the total doses of local anesthetic administered. This allows a much greater preservation of lower limb motor function in the parturient, with a subsequent positive effect on maternal ambulation. Although it is well documented that maternal satisfaction scores are

Hearing in an ambulance paramedic population.

Ambulance cab noise levels during siren use, hearing levels of 56 ambulance paramedics, and hearing acuity changes of four ambulance paramedics during a 14-year period were examined to determine whether environmental noise levels are sufficient to produce hearing loss, to determine if hearing loss is indeed present in ambulance paramedics, and to determine if ambulance paramedics lose heaing acuity at rates faster than "normal" peers. Ambulance cab noise levels during siren use were intense (mean of 102.5 dBA in a common conditions), well above the Occupational Safety and Health Administration

UltraViolet SANitizing System for Sterilization of Ambulances Fleets and for Real-Time Monitoring of Their Sterilization Level.

BACKGROUND: The contamination of ambulances with pathogenic agents represents a potential threat for the public health, not only for common pathogens but also for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The aim of this project was to exploits the germicidal effect of the UVC radiation at 254 nm to sanitize the patient's compartment of ambulances with an advanced UltraViolet SANitizing System (UV-SAN) and assess its relevance for avoiding the spread of COVID-19 and other drug resistant pathogens. METHODS: The system is equipped with UVC lamps that are activated when the a…
