Amino acids in retinitis pigmentosa.

A survey of fasting whole blood amino acids in 65 patients with various subtypes of retinitis pigmentosa performed. Eight X-linked recessive patients showed decreased taurine and aspartate. Nineteen autosomal recessive patients, and to lesser extent 10 autosomal dominant patients, showed reduced levels of whole blood threonine and histidine. Branched-chain amino acids and arginine were present in increased amounts in 2 patients with Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome. These findings in LMBB patients are probably related in part to their obesity and emphasise that appropriate controls are requ…

Plasma amino acids in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the amino acid profile in a group of adolescents with anorexia nervosa, and to apply alternative ways of presenting a … Female adolescents (n = 92, age: 15+/-1.8 y) at diagnosis of anorexia nervosa. Reference values for amino acids were obtained from apparently healthy adolescents (by history and analytical data) who underwent presurgical analysis for minor operations. INTERVENTIONS: Plasma amino acid concentrations were measured by ion exchange chromatography. Basic laborato …

Intravenous amino acids, cholestasis and kwashiorkor.

Kwashiorkor dermatosis has not been reported in children on parenteral nutrition (PN). We report a case of kwashiorkor developing in a partially PN dependent patient with cholestasis, when amino acids were removed from the PN solution in an effort to control the cholestasis. Although the kwashiorkor dermatosis improved within 24 hours after the addition of amino acids (1 g/kg) to the PN solution, the cholestasis worsened.

D-amino acids in animal peptides.

D-amino acids have been detected in a variety of peptides synthesized by animal cells. These include opiate and antimicrobial peptides from amphibian skin, neuropeptides from snail ganglia, a hormone from crustaceans, and a constituent of a spider venom. cDNA cloning has shown that at those positions where a D-amino acid is found in the end-product, a normal codon for the corresponding L-amino acid is present. This implies that the D-residues are formed from L-amino acids by a posttranslational reaction. A prototype enzyme catalyzing such a reaction has recently been isolated from the venom of…

Plasma amino acids in rheumatoid arthritis.

Plasma amino acid concentrations have been investigated in 12 female patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), who were hospitalized for two … ted, a smaller increment than that apparent in healthy controls. The increase in sulphur-containing amino acids might be interpreted as a sign of an enhanced glutathione (GSH) catabolism, whereas the differing metabolic behaviour of branched chain amino acids (BCAA) suggests a specific reaction of valine in RA disease, similar to that in other catabolic disea …

Ultraviolet Photodissociation of Proteinogenic Amino Acids.

The ultraviolet photochemistry of the amino acids glycine, leucine, proline, and serine in their neutral forms was investigated using parahydrogen matrix-isolation spectroscopy. Irradiation by 213 nm light destroys the chirality of all three chiral amino acids as a result of the α-carbonyl C-C bond cleavage and hydrocarboxyl (HOCO) radical production. The temporal behavior of the Fourier-transform infrared spectra revealed that HOCO radicals rapidly reach a steady state, which occurs predominantly due to photodissociation of HOCO into CO + OH or CO2 + H. In glycine and leucine, the amine radic…

Plasma amino acids in ecstasy users.

Recreational use of the illegal drug "ecstasy" has increased dramatically in recent years. We have measured 33 different plasma amino acids in ecstasy users and controls. Significant differences were found for phosphoserine, glutamate, citrulline, methionine, tyrosine and histidine. Resembling changes in the plasma amino acids have been described in acute transient polymorphous psychosis. Thus, alterations in plasma - methionine and phosphoserine or other amino acids could be involved in the psychical symptoms produced by MDMA.

Amino acids in neurotransmission and disease.

BACKGROUND: The amino acids, glutamate, GABA and glycine are involved in normal cellular function as well as in neuro-transmission. Glutamate in particular may be linked to neuron development and an oversupply may be the major cause of many acute and chronic neurological diseases. Such diseases include retinopathy of prematurity, glaucoma, hypertension, diabetes and ischemic damage secondary to vessel occlusion. CONCLUSIONS: This paper provides a review of the localization, proposed function and the mechanisms of manufacture and deactivation of the amino acid neurotransmitters. Current mechan…

Amino acids of Diclidophora merlangi (Monogenea).

The level of free amino acids in Diclidophora merlangi is high, comprising over 500 mu moles/g ethanol extracted dry weight. A single amino acid, proline, constitutes some 70% of the total pool. Analysis of parasite protein and host blood and mucus revealed low proline levels, suggesting that the high free pool content was not related to a requirement for protein systhesis or to its abundance in the diet of the worm. Experiments revealed that proline was not involved specifically in osmoregulation, and the reasons for the large amounts present in Diclidophora remain unknown.

Shock synthesis of amino acids II.

The synthesis of amino acids behind shock waves in methane, ethane, ammonia, and water vapor was further investigated. Aldehydes and HCN are formed separately in the non-homogeneous gas during the high temperature period and recombine with ammonia during the thermal quench period, to form chi-amino nitriles. The chi-amino nitriles are either hydrolyzed by excess water vapor during the quench period or emerge as such after the reaction is completed. A combined gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer analysis of the reaction product showed identical amounts of D and L amino acids, thus confirming th…

Transforming natural amino acids into alpha-alkyl-substituted amino acids with the help of the HOF.CH3CN complex.

Alpha-alkyl amino acids can be efficiently prepared in high yields from the respective amino acids themselves. The key step is the oxidation of the amine function to create the corresponding alpha-nitro acid in a fast and very high yield reaction followed by phase-transfer alkylation and finally reduction to the desired alpha-alkyl amino acid. Several such acids containing aromatic rings or additional carboxylic groups and acids with steric hindrance at the alpha-position are suitable substrates. Several alkyl halides were examined as alkylating agents.
