The anatomy of appendicitis.

Acute appendicitis is a common disorder and, ideally, should be diagnosed prior to the onset of gangrene or perforation. Nonetheless, the goal of early diagnosis remains elusive. In a prospective study, 100 appendectomies were performed for suspected acute appendicitis over 19 months. The location of the appendix was noted by the operating surgeon and was listed as anterior intraperitoneal, retrocecal, pericolic gutter, retroileal, pelvic, or retroperitoneal. The latter four positions were regarded as sites in which the appendix was hidden from the anterior parietal peritoneum. Fifteen patient

The anatomy of the limbus.

The limbus forms the border between the transparent cornea and opaque sclera, contains the pathways of aqueous humour outflow, and is the site of surgical incisions for cataract and glaucoma. Externally the epithelial cell border between conjunctiva and cornea possesses multipotential cells important for differentiation of the respective cell types. By the same token, the internal limbal border zone between corneal endothelium and anterior trabeculum appears to contain specialised cells some of which are activated to migrate and repopulate the trabecular meshwork after trabecular injury. The o

Extrahepatic biliary anatomy at laparoscopic cholecystectomy: is aberrant anatomy important?

BACKGROUND: The prevention of major duct injury at cholecystectomy relies on the accurate dissection of the cystic duct and artery, and avoidance of major adjacent biliary and vascular structures. Innumerable variations in the anatomy of the extrahepatic biliary tree and associated vasculature have been reported from radiographical and anatomical studies, and are cited as a potential cause of bile duct injury at cholecystectomy. METHODS: A photographic study of the dissected anatomy of 186 consecutive cholecystectomies was undertaken and each photo analysed to assess the position of the cysti…

Anatomy of the Trachea.

The trachea serves as a conduit for inspiration and expiration of air; apparatus for phonation; mucociliary escalator for airway clearance and pulmonary defense; and allows for the more distal exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Each of these functions is a result of the embryologic development and resultant structural anatomy of the trachea. The purpose of this article is to provide a review of tracheal embryology and anatomy, including endoscopic anatomy and airway imaging techniques.

Anatomy of the Orbit.

The orbit is a paired, transversely oval, and cone-shaped osseous cavity bounded and formed by the anterior and middle cranial base as well … he nasal cavity. This article provides a detailed illustration and description of the microsurgical anatomy of the orbit, with a focus on the intrinsically complex spatial relationships around the annular tendon and the superior orbital fissure, the transition from cavernous sinus to the orbital apex. Sparse reference will be made to surgical approaches, …

Anatomy of the pleura.

The pleura is a monolayer of mesothelial cells covering the lung and inner surface of the chest cavity, creating the pleural space. The mesothelial cells rest on a matrix of collagen, elastic fibers, blood vessels, and lymphatics, which allow the lung and chest to expand and contract, protected from friction by the pleural fluid and properties of the mesothelial cells. With a rich blood supply and lymphatic system just deep to the mesothelial layer, the pleura is a dynamic layer protecting the lung and pleural cavity from infection while transmitting the forces of respiration without damage to

The anatomy of the scaphoid.

The scaphoid is a critical link in the mechanism of the carpus. Its complex shape allows it to participate in the kinematics of both the proximal and distal row. Because of its offset proximal and distal articular surfaces, it has a natural tendency to palmar-flex with longitudinal loading. Because of this, extension of the scaphoid places progressively increasing tension on the palmar cortex of the curved waist of the scaphoid. Excessive extension or ulnar deviation of the wrist, coupled with excessive loading, mechanically predisposes the scaphoid to fracture. This is especially true if the

[Anatomy of the liver].

Over the past decades, great progress has been made in surgery on the liver. Technical achievements and the strict application of anatomical knowledge to surgical practice have added a new dimension to the field of liver surgery. In some cases, new facts about the anatomy of the liver needed considerable time before being implemented. Surgery of liver metastases, primary tumours of the liver and not least liver transplantation have focussed the interest of visceral surgeons more and more on this organ. Segment-orientated liver anatomy, a knowledge and consideration of vascular structures, and …

Anatomy of the orbit.

The normal orbit arguably contains the most complex anatomy of the human body. The orbit's small size, complex anatomy, and elaborate function make it a diagnostic challenge to evaluate. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) are essential studies for visualization of most normal and abnormal orbital structures. These studies also can help to understand some of the functional anatomical relationships within the orbit. This article attempts to review and illustrate the normal anatomical structures that can be identified on CT and MR images. These structures include the bo…

[Anatomy, micro-anatomy and physiology of the lymphatics of the lungs and chest wall].

The thoracic lymphatic vessels are pulsating channels which drain actively the fluid of lung parenchyma interstitium and pleural cavities. Their unidirectional valves that avoid reflux of contents, direct the current of fluid to the connection of thoracic duct to subclavian vein or to the thoracic duct itself by these pulsations. The ascending parietal and visceral currents have anastomoses between them. The parietal currents (internal thoracic anteriorly, external axillaries in lateral and paravertebral in posterior) drain the lymph of thoracic wall. Pleural cavities and the visceral currents
