Management of Iron Deficiency Anemia.

Anemia affects one-fourth of the world's population, and iron deficiency is the predominant cause. Anemia is associated with chronic fatigue, impaired cognitive function, and diminished well-being. Patients with iron deficiency anemia of unknown etiology are frequently referred to a gastroenterologist because in the majority of cases the condition has a gastrointestinal origin. Proper management improves quality of life, alleviates the symptoms of iron deficiency, and reduces the need for blood transfusions. Treatment options include oral and intravenous iron therapy; however, the efficacy of

Iron deficiency anemia in children.

Iron deficiency is not just anemia; it can be responsible for a long list of other manifestations. This topic is of great importance, especially in infancy and early childhood, for a variety of reasons. Firstly, iron need is maximum in this period. Secondly, diet in infancy is usually deficient in iron. Thirdly and most importantly, iron deficiency at this age can result in neurodevelopmental and cognitive deficits, which may not be reversible. Hypochromia and microcytosis in a complete blood count (CBC) makes iron deficiency anemia (IDA) most likely diagnosis. Absence of response to iron shou

Iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy.

Anemia is the most frequent derailment of physiology in the world throughout the life of a woman. It is a serious condition in countries that are industrialized and in countries with poor resources. The main purpose of this manuscript is to give the right concern of anemia in pregnancy. The most common causes of anemia are poor nutrition, iron deficiencies, micronutrients deficiencies including folic acid, vitamin A and vitamin B12, diseases like malaria, hookworm infestation and schistosomiasis, HIV infection and genetically inherited hemoglobinopathies such as thalassemia. Depending on the s

[Pagophagia in iron deficiency anemia].

The relationship between pagophagia (ice pica) and iron deficiency anemia was studied. All 81 patients with iron deficiency anemia defined as hemoglobin <12.0 g/dl and ferritin level <12 ng/ml were interviewed about their habits of eating ice or other non-food substances. Pagophagia was defined as compulsive and repeated ingestion of at least one tray of ice or ice eating which was relieved after iron administration. Pagophagia was present in 13 patients (16.0%). All patients who received oral iron were periodically assessed employing a questionnaire on pagophagia and laboratory data. Iron the

Iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy.

Iron deficiency is seen commonly in women during their reproductive years and particularly during pregnancy. The physician who primarily cares for women should be aware of this and initiate iron supplementation when indicated. The association of poor pregnancy outcome is of concern when iron deficiency is present in the first trimester. It is unclear whether this is because of the anemia or other epidemiologic factors. It is also unknown whether correcting iron deficiency before conception improved neo-natal outcome. Until more is known concerning IDA, it is recommended that pregnant women rec

Iron deficiency anemia in children.

Even when simple iron deficiency is strongly suspected, the child with severe anemia deserves a careful and thorough work-up before treatment is begun. Many other possible causes of anemia need to be excluded. No one test specifically identifies iron deficiency, but the combined use of several tests of iron status can establish iron deficiency with certainty. Hemoglobin level, mean corpuscular volume, serum iron, total iron binding capacity, free erythrocyte porphyrin and serum ferritin are the important studies.

Iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Anemia in pregnancy is associated with increased maternal and neonatal morbidity. There is increasing awareness amongst obstetricians about the need to screen for iron deficiency anemia (IDA), as well as growing literature on diagnosis and treatment. This review aims to summarize causes, consequences, treatment, and evaluation of IDA in pregnancy. RECENT FINDINGS: National guidelines provide varying guidance on diagnosis and treatment of IDA in pregnancy. Serum ferritin is a helpful adjunct for the diagnosis of IDA. Oral iron remains an option for treatment; absorption is i

Acquired Refractory Iron Deficiency Anemia.

Anemia is a global health problem affecting one-third of the world population, and half of the cases are due to iron deficiency (ID). Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the leading cause of disability in several countries. Although multiple mechanisms may coexist, ID and IDA causes can be classified as i) insufficient iron intake for the body requirement, ii) reduced absorption, and iii) blood losses. Oral iron represents the mainstay of IDA treatment. IDA is defined as "refractory" when the hematologic response after 4 to 6 weeks of treatment with oral iron (an increase of >=1 g/dL of Hb) is abs

Iron Deficiency Anemia in Pregnancy.

Anemia is defined as a low red blood cell count, a low hematocrit, or a low hemoglobin concentration. In pregnancy, a hemoglobin concentration of less than 11.0 g/dL in the first trimester and less than 10.5 or 11.0 g/dL in the second or third trimester (depending on the guideline used) is considered anemia. Anemia is the most common hematologic abnormality in pregnancy. Maternal anemia is associated with adverse fetal, neonatal and childhood outcomes, but causality is not established. Maternal anemia increases the likelihood of transfusion at delivery. Besides hemodilution, iron deficiency is

[Iron-deficiency anemia. Hematologist's viewpoint].

Enlarged spleen, fever, increased susceptibility to infections, and thrombocytosis, are manifestations of iron deficiency which are relatively specific of pediatric patients. Iron deficiency anemia is part of everyday pediatrics. Patients are referred to the hematologist in the following situations: 1) Therapy is ineffective for one of the following reasons: the hypochromic anemia is not caused by iron deficiency (hemoglobinopathies); iron is less efficiently used because of transferrin deficiency or infectious, inflammatory or cancerous disease; iron therapy is inadequate either because of in

[Iron deficiency anemia and anemia of chronic disorders].

Hypochromic-microcytic anemias are characterized by a hemoglobin deficiency of the erythrocytes. The main reason for the insufficient hemoglobin synthesis is, with exception of thalassemia and a few other rare conditions, primarily a disorder of iron metabolism. Differential diagnostic considerations are focused on iron deficiency anemia, with approximately 80% the most common form of anemia worldwide. Iron deficiency anemia shows a particularly high prevalence in developing countries, but is also in industrialized Western countries the most common cause of anemia. Infants, toddlers, premenopa

Iron metabolism and iron deficiency anemia in women.

Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are highly prevalent among women across their reproductive age. An iron-deficient state has been associated with and causes a number of adverse health consequences, affecting all aspects of the physical and emotional well-being of women. Heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy, and the postpartum period are the major causes of ID and IDA. However, despite the high prevalence and the impact on quality of life, ID and IDA among women in their reproductive age is still underdiagnosed and undertreated. In this chapter we summarized the iron metabol

[Iron deficiency anemia and newly available iron preparations].

The body does not possess an active export system for iron. Therefore, the amount of iron uptake is usually small; iron metabolism in the body should be considered a "semi-closed system." However, iron needed for erythropoiesis can be lacking in the case of continuous bleeding, and thus, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) would occur. IDA is the most common form of anemia; approximately 70% of anemia is IDA. Therefore, upper and lower endoscopies or gynecological procedures should be used to treat bleeding sites; in addition, the small intestine can now be widely observed and treated by double-ballo
