Globin-gene mutations are a rare but important cause of cyanosis. We identified a missense mutation in the fetal Gγ-globin gene (HBG2) in a father and daughter with transient neonatal cyanosis and anemia. This new mutation modifies the ligand-binding pocket of fetal hemoglobin by means of two mechanisms. First, the relatively large side chain of methionine decreases both the affinity of oxygen for binding to the mutant hemoglobin subunit and the rate at which it does so. Second, the mutant methionine is converted to aspartic acid post-translationally, probably through oxidative mechanisms. The

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate feasibility of systematic neonatal screening for sickle cell disease in Chhattisgarh.
METHODS: A pilot study was done from February 2008 through January 2009 in Department of Pediatrics & Neonatology, Pt. J.N.M. Medical College & Dr.B.R.A.M. Hospital, Raipur (Chhattisgarh) on a total of 1,158 neonates. Blood samples from the neonates were taken after 48 h of birth on filter paper for detection of sickle cell anemia using Biorad hemoglobin variant Neonatal sickle cell short programme by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). On follow up, cases were analyzed by H

UNLABELLED: In-utero transfusion is now well under control and improves the survival of foetuses monitored for fetal anemia with a survival rate of more than 80 %. The aim was to evaluate short-term neonatal outcome after fetal severe anemia managed by intrauterine transfusions. We did a retrospective study of all neonates born after management of severe fetal anemia (n = 93) between January 1999 and January 2013 in our regional center. The two main causes of anemia were maternal red blood cell alloimmunization (N = 81, 87 %) and Parvovirus B19 infection (N = 10, 10.8 %). In the alloimmunizati

One of the most commonly inherited anemias in man is Hereditary Spherocytosis (HS) with an incidence of 1 in 2000 for persons of Northern European descent. Mouse models of HS include spontaneous inherited hemolytic anemias and those generated by gene targeting. The Neonatal anemia (Nan) mouse is a novel model of HS generated by N-ethyl-N-nitrosurea mutagenesis and suffers from a severe neonatal anemia. Adult Nan mice have a lifelong hemolytic anemia with decreased red blood cell numbers, hematocrit, and hemoglobin, but elevated zinc protoporphyrin levels. Blood smears taken from Nan mice show

Background/Objectives: Iron stores accrued in utero are critical for fetal and infant neurodevelopment. Low neonatal hemoglobin (Hb) may indicate inadequate iron capture and storage. Prior studies differ on whether and under what conditions maternal anemia predicts neonatal Hb; whether sex differences are present is unknown. Methods: Maternal and neonatal Hb and sociodemographic and health characteristics were abstracted from electronic medical records for biorepository participants at a tertiary academic medical center. Maternal anemia was defined as Hb < 11 g/dL in trimesters T1 and T3 and H

Hereditary hemolytic anemia (HHA) is a group of genetically and phenotypically heterogeneous disorders characterized by premature destruction of red blood cells (RBCs) with clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic to marked hemolytic anemia. There are three main categories of HHA: (a) RBC membrane defects; (b) hemoglobinopathies/thalassemias; and (c) RBC enzyme deficiencies. Hyperbilirubinemia is a frequent consequence of hemolytic anemia and can lead to bilirubin-associated neurotoxicity in neonates and to jaundice, and formation of gall stones in adults. Hyperbilirubinemia can also

Solitary infantile myofibroma with visceral involvement is very rare. We present an unusual case of a solitary myofibroma with abdominal localization in a 1-day-old female neonate who presented with severe anemia and rectal bleeding. A bleeding myofibroma was found, located in the wall of the jejunum, and totally resected. In case of a solitary lesion, treatment is relatively easy and effective, with excellent prognosis after total resection. The multiple form (myofibromatosis) has a poor prognosis with low survival rates. We therefore recommend total body MRI for all patients diagnosed with m

Neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE) affects 1%-2% pregnant females with autoimmunity. An infant presented with steroid refractory hemolytic anemia as a manifestation of NLE. A trial of withholding breastfeeding had a transient response, but infant was eventually put on cyclosporin therapy to control the hemolysis. Now he is thriving well and transfusion free.

Anemia in neonatal period is rare, with the common causes being Rh and ABO blood group incompatibility, hemorrhagic disease of newborn, congenital hemolytic anemia, hemoglobinopathies, and TORCH (toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes virus) infections. Congenital leukemia and infantile osteopetrosis (OP) are among the rare causes of neonatal anemia. A review of the literature shows approximately 200 reported cases of congenital leukemia. Articles describing the imaging features of congenital leukemia are still rarer. Infantile OP, another rare disorder with a reported incidence of 1

Anemia is a major global health problem, particularly in developing countries such as India, due to the greater prevalence of dietary iron deficiency, hemoglobinopathies, macronutrient deficiencies, and infections such as malaria, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and hookworm infestation. Anemia-induced hypoxia triggers a range of vascular and structural changes in the placenta, potentially leading to complications for both the mother and the fetus. Studies have shown that placentae from anemic mothers often exhibit hypertrophy, characterized by increased placental weight relative to fetal

After admitting a patient to our Neonatal Intensive Care with a severe anemia and an ear malformation, we ruled out any other cause than maternal medication use. Knowing she used mycophenolate mofetil during pregnancy, we looked for related articles. Two articles were found describing ear malformations, but no article was ever written about anemia caused by this medication. Consulting the international registers of drug effects through the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, we found out that the anemia was never seen or reported before.

Fetomaternal transfusion occurs in about 50 percent pregnancies. However, it can cause severe neonatal anemia at birth. A one-day-old baby girl, small for gestational age, was born to a G1P1 woman without perinatal blood loss or obstetric complication. Pallor and mild tachypnea were noted after birth. Laboratory examination revealed severe anemia, (Hb: 4.8 gm/dl, Hct: 14.7%), reticulocytosis and normoblastemia. Direct coombs' test was negative. Brain echo examination was normal. Maternal peripheral blood smear stained with Kleihauer-Betke technique demonstrated presence of fetal cells. Followi

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to correlate antenatal Kleihauer (KT) test results with fetal hemoglobin at birth to find a threshold for predicting severe fetal anemia. The secondary objectives were to assess the impact of KT on obstetric management and to study the correlation between the middle cerebral artery peack systolic velocity and fetal anemia.
RESULTS: One thousand forty-six KT were positive over the 10-year period, but only 147 were included from 88 patients, of which 17 fetuses were anemic. Demographic and obstetric characteristics were similar between anemic and non-anemic

Vaginal delivery of the macrosomic fetus may result in hemorrhage of intra-abdominal organs. Mostly affected organs are the liver and adrenal glands. Hemorrhage of liver is usually occurs as a subcapsular hemorrhage and it is clinically presented an abdominal mass without symptoms of anemia. But intraparenchymal hemorrhage of liver is very rare and there is no sign of abdominal mass. However, in contrast to subcapsular hemorrhage, symptoms of anemia are rapidly developed in newborns. A macrosomic newborn by vaginal delivery at term. Within 6 h after delivery, the patient showed pallor without

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate neonatal outcome of monochorionic twin pregnancies complicated by twin anemia-polycythemia sequence (TAPS).
STUDY DESIGN: A cohort of consecutive monochorionic twins with TAPS with double survivors was included in the study. Each twin pair with TAPS was compared with 2 monochorionic twin pairs who were unaffected by TAPS or twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome and who were matched for gestational age at birth. Neonatal death, severe morbidity, and cerebral injury were studied.
RESULTS: We included 19 twin pairs in the TAPS group and 38 contro

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the implications of maternal anemia in term neonates.
METHODS: In a population-based retrospective cohort study, standard demographic and clinical variables noted during post-birth hospitalization in term neonates were compared across groups stratified by maternal anemia in a racially diverse population.
RESULTS: Of 474 maternal-neonatal dyads, 66.03 % were Hispanic (H), 15.8 % Black (B), 7.3 % non-Hispanic White (NHW), and 10.7 % Asian/Pacific Islanders (AP). 39.6 % of H, 57.3 % of B, 65.7 % of NHW, and 37 % of AP mothers were anemic, with significantly higher pre

Anemia of prematurity is a physiologic and iatrogenic process defined by gestational age and involves a decrease in an infant's red blood cell mass by 2 SD Severity is often inversely proportional to gestational age and the presence of comorbid conditions that alter erythropoietin production, reduce red blood cell life span and iron stores, and necessitate frequent serum blood draws. Blood transfusion is a common treatment for severe anemia, and when nonemergent it requires informed consent from a parent or a court-appointed guardian. Jehovah's Witness (JW) community members typically do not a
