A one-pot synthesis of ketones from carboxylic acids is presented, employing 2-nitrobenzenesulfonyl chloride as an activating reagent in the presence of organomagnesium or organolithium nucleophiles. Additionally, activation of the carboxylic acids with 2-nitrobenzenesulfonyl chloride enabled the formation of symmetrical anhydrides. Subsequent conversion of these anhydrides into the desired ketones also proceeded with good yields.

Carbonyl sulfide (COS), a component of volcanic gas emissions and interstellar gas clouds, is shown to be an efficient condensing agent in the context of phosphate chemistry in aqueous solutions. We report that high-energy aminoacyl-phosphate anhydrides and aminoacyl adenylates are generated in solutions containing amino acids, COS, and the corresponding phosphate molecule. A group of 145 workers exposed to methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MTHPA) was investigated. They were working in a plant which, since 1983, handled an epoxy resin with MTHPA as a hardener. Specific IgE antibodies (RAST) to a conjugate between MTHPA and human serum albumin (HSA) were statistically significantly increased (P = 0.001; 26 subjects = 18% positive) in the exposed group, compared to a non-exposed control group (n = 33).
