Accuracy of Ottawa ankle rules for midfoot and ankle injuries.

Background The management of ankle sprains is common practice in emergency departments. Traditionally, physicians would order radiographs for all ankle injuries although the overall incidence of fractures are less than 15% .  The Ottawa Ankle Rules (OAR) have been developed to predict the necessity of radiographs in acute ankle injuries. Material and Method This is a prospective study of consecutive patients aged 16 years or older with acute non-penetrating ankle or foot injuries and who had a radiography of ankle or foot or both. Results 499 cases were included in the study. 56.90 % of the pa…

[Injuries to the lateral ankle ligaments].

Acute sprains and ruptures of the lateral ankle ligaments are the most common injuries of the ankle joint. They are often related to sporting activity and predominantly affect individuals under 40 years old. Lateral ligament injuries occur due to supination trauma. The anterior talofibular ligament is most commonly affected often in combination with the calcaneofibular ligament. In contrast, ruptures of all three lateral ankle ligaments (luxatio pedis supinatoria) or complete ruptures of the medial and lateral ligaments (luxatio pedis cum talo) are extremely rare. The clinical diagnostics have

Foot and Ankle Injuries in Runners.

Foot and ankle injuries account for nearly one-third of running injuries. Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciopathy, and ankle sprains are 3 of the most common types of injuries sustained during training. Other common injuries include other tendinopathies of the foot and ankle, bone stress injuries, nerve conditions including neuromas, and joint disease including osteoarthritis. This review provides an evidence-based framework for the evaluation and optimal management of these conditions to ensure safe return to running participation and reduce risk for future injury.

Optimal management of ankle syndesmosis injuries.

Syndesmosis injuries occur when there is a disruption of the distal attachment of the tibia and fibula. These injuries occur commonly (up to 18% of ankle sprains), and the incidence increases in the setting of athletic activity. Recognition of these injuries is key to preventing long-term morbidity. Diagnosis and treatment of these injuries requires a thorough understanding of the normal anatomy and the role it plays in the stability of the ankle. A complete history and physical examination is of paramount importance. Patients usually experience an external rotation mechanism of injury. Key ph

[Posttraumatic complications after pediatric ankle injuries].

Ankle sprains are common injuries in childhood and are generally harmless. However, fractures of the ankle joint are rare, but complications (persistent rotational or axial deformity, alteration of growth of the distal tibia or fibula, or joint deformity) can lead to serious problems during growth. The clinical relevance of growth disturbances at the distal tibia or fibula depends on the age at the time of fracture more than on the fracture type, severity of dislocation, or interponated material in the fracture gap. Both stimulation and inhibition of growth are possible. Inhibition of growth a

Arthroscopically assisted treatment of ankle injuries.

Ankle arthroscopy is a valuable tool in the treatment of certain intra-articular fractures involving the ankle, as it provides the ability to address osteochondral injury and aids in the direct visualization for joint reduction through minimal intervention. It can sometimes be complimented by a more minimally invasive approach to fracture reduction and internal fixation. It should be noted that to perform arthroscopically assisted minimally invasive fracture approaches, the surgeon must have significant experience with traditional open techniques.

[Ligamentous injuries to the ankle joint].

Injuries to the lateral ankle ligaments are the most common sports injuries. Determination of their severity and exclusion of relevant accompanying injuries requires a subtle clinical and a focussed radiological assessment. Treatment is non-operative and functional in the majority of cases. Consequent application of orthoses limiting supination and proprioceptive training are essential to avoid chronic instability. With recurrent ankle sprains one has to distinguish between functional and mechanical instability. The latter can be treated successfully with anatomic reconstruction and ligamentop

Foot and ankle injuries in dance.

Although dancers develop overuse injuries common in other athletes, they are also susceptible to unique injuries. This article reviews common foot and ankle problems seen in dancers and provides some basic diagnosis and treatment strategies.

Foot and ankle injuries in dance.

Acute traumatic injuries are common in ballet dancers. A careful history, thorough examination, and appropriate imaging should allow for the diagnosis of most problems. The clinician must have a high index of suspicion for occult bony injuries, especially if the patient fails to recover as expected. Aggressive treatment of the sprained ankle is essential to maintain foot and ankle mobility and prevent prolonged disability and subsequent overuse injuries. Kinetic chain dysfunctions are common in ballet dancers with overuse injuries and commonly follow ankle sprains. They may represent a seconda

Foot and ankle injuries and disorders.

This chapter analyses the mechanics of walking and running gait and delineates the terminology used to describe foot and ankle injuries. A helpful anatomic review precedes explanations of the mechanisms of sports injuries in this area. The author documents the correct diagnoses and treatments for foot and ankle sprains, fractures, and stress injuries.

Common ankle injuries in the athlete.

The ankle is often a neglected joint by the athlete because of an inadequate understanding of the injury. Sprains and fractures are common injuries in the athlete because of the force of impact on the ankle during activity. Appropriate management of ankle injuries promotes healing and prompt return to sports activities.

Ankle injuries caused by seat belts.

Two cases of tri-malleolar frautures of the ankle caused by feet becoming entangled in loose seat belts are reported. Open reduction and internal fixation of all three malleolar fragments was carried out in each case with a satisfactory end result.

Foot and Ankle Injuries in Baseball.

Foot and ankle injuries in baseball provide unique challenges to the provider. Most foot and ankle injuries (ie, ankle sprains and contusions) can be managed non-operatively using a similar approach as in other athletic populations, but a few unique mechanisms of injury in baseball are important to be aware of. While upper extremity injuries such as ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tears and labral tears are extensively reported on in the literature, there is a need for further baseball-specific research on foot and ankle injuries, especially given the increasing prevalence of these injuries ov…
