Pandemic Politics: Developing Vaccines in Canada's Anti-vax Heartland.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Saskatchewan is a story of extremes. Through most of 2020, low case numbers, effective policy, and broad agreement among government officials, health care workers, and the public sustained a consensus that strict measures and vaccination offered the best responses; however, that consensus collapsed. The province shifted from a focal point for Canadian vaccine development to a staging ground for an anti-vaccine movement that took root on social media and then in street protests. Premier Scott Moe moved from a pro-vaccine, pro-consensus stance to a confrontational positi

Resister's logic: the anti-vaccination arguments of Alfred Russel Wallace and their role in the debates over compulsory vaccination in England, 1870-1907.

In the 1880s, Alfred Russel Wallace, the celebrated co-discoverer of natural selection, launched himself into the centre of a politicised and polarised debate over the unpopular compulsory vaccination laws in England. Wallace never wavered in his belief that smallpox vaccination was useless and likely dangerous. Six years before his death, the anti-vaccinationists successfully secured a conscience clause that effectively dismantled the compulsory vaccination laws. Several other important Victorian scientists joined Wallace in the fight to repeal compulsory vaccination arguing that widely held

"I've heard some things that scare me". Responding with empathy to parents' fears of vaccinations.

The Lancet's 1998 publication of "Ileal-lymphoid-nodular hyperplasia, non-specific colitis, and pervasive developmental disorder in children" by Andrew Wakefield, et. al., positing a causal relationship between MMR vaccine and autism in children, set off a media storm and galvanized the anti-vaccine movement. In this paper, centuries-old fears of vaccination and the history of autism as a medical diagnosis are considered, and an affective, family-centered approach to dealing with parental fears by physicians is proposed.

[The meaning of vaccine or when predicting is a duty].

From the perspective of historiography, the article analyzes the construction of scientific medicine's major landmark: the small-pox vaccine. When this vaccine was created and widely distributed, the medical field demonstrated how technology controls life on a planetary scale. The great victory of scientific medicine rests on the fact that today the life of the small-pox virus depends upon laboratory conditions. Born in England during the 1870's, the anti-vaccine movement questioned universal, mandatory small-pox vaccination. The article examines some metaphors and analogies used by physicians

Can "My Body, My Choice" anti-vaxxers be pro-life?

Many "anti-vaxxers" oppose COVID-19 vaccination mandates on the grounds that they wrongfully infringe on bodily autonomy. Their view has been expressed with the slogan "My Body, My Choice," co-opted from the pro-choice abortion rights movement. Yet, many of those same people are pro-life and support abortion restrictions that are effectively a kind of gestation mandate. Both vaccine and gestation mandates impose restrictions on bodily autonomy in order to prevent serious harms. This article evaluates the defensibility of the anti-vax pro-life position. We argue that the case for opposing gesta

Update on autism spectrum disorder: vaccines, genomes, and social skills training.

Despite making significant progress in understanding autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and its genetic underpinnings, controversy remains regarding ASD and its historical, erroneous association with vaccines. This controversy includes the latest anti-vaccine movement that caused a recurrence of the almost vanquished measles and mumps diseases. The history of ASD, complexities of research involving ASD genetics, and benefits of social skills training are explored.

Post-vaccinic opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome: a case report.

The opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome is a pathological condition characterized mainly by involuntary myoclonic movements involving ocular, trunk and limb muscles associated with ataxia and other neurological signs. We describe the case of a 30-year-old woman who developed this syndrome 15days after anti-Rubella vaccination. This case suggests a possible autoimmune post-vaccinic etiopathogenesis of opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome, rarely described in the literature.

Canine Vaccination-A Survey of Owner Attitudes and Adherence to Vaccination Protocols.

Vaccination is one of the most important measures for infectious disease control. Recently, media-generated concern about vaccine-associated adverse effects has produced a rise in both human and animal "anti-vaccination" movements. This study aimed to understand factors involved in dog owner vaccination decisions and explore whether there has been an increase in titer testing. An online survey targeting dog owners received a total of 2585 responses, which showed 79% of respondents had their dogs vaccinated in the last 12 months. A few owners had never vaccinated their dogs, and 13% of owners u

An Epidemic Model with Pro and Anti-vaccine Groups.

Here, an epidemiological model considering pro and anti-vaccination groups is proposed and analyzed. In this model, susceptible individuals can migrate between these two groups due to the influence of false and true news about safety and efficacy of vaccines. From this model, written as a set of three ordinary differential equations, analytical expressions for the disease-free steady state, the endemic steady state, and the basic reproduction number are derived. It is analytically shown that low vaccination rate and no influx to the pro-vaccination group have similar impacts on the long-term a

Gianotti-Crosti syndrome (papular acrodermatitis of childhood) in the era of a viral recrudescence and vaccine opposition.

BACKGROUND: Gianotti-Crosti syndrome is characterized by an acute onset of a papular or papulovesicular eruption with a symmetrical distribution. DATA SOURCES: A PubMed search was conducted using Clinical Queries with the key terms "Gianotti-Crosti syndrome" OR "papular acrodermatitis". The search strategy included meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, clinical trials, observational studies, and reviews. This paper is based on, but not limited to, the search results. RESULTS: The eruption of Gianotti-Crosti syndrome is found predominantly on the cheeks, extensor surfaces of the extrem

On religious and secular exemptions: A case study of childhood vaccination waivers.

This paper analyses exemptions to general law through the prism of vaccine waivers in the United States. All US states legally require the v … les outbreaks. This can be traced back to an increasing public questioning of vaccines by a growing anti-vaccination movement. In reaction to the outbreak and the public outrage it generated, several states proposed-and some already passed-bills to eliminate nonmedical exemptions. I analyze two questions. First, can legal exemptions from mandatory childhood vaccination sch …

[Vaccine hesitancy in Spain (1801), Ruiz de Luzuriaga responses in defense of vaccination].

The rapid diffusion of the jennerian method was founded in simplicity to practice, in its apparent effectiveness in combating smallpox and its epidemiological opportunity, as it appeared at the time of greatest recrudescence of the disease. The initial impulse for it's propagation, which originated a recognized movement to protect population health, was not without controversy. At the same time that defenders of the vaccine were added, opposite opinions appeared that used diverse critics to discredit it. The most common was to reveal their alleged failures using the media of the time, so cases

The pertussis vaccine controversy in Great Britain, 1974-1986.

This historical essay analyzes the role played by Great Britain in the pertussis vaccine controversy of the 1970s and 1980s. Public backlash against this vaccine not only took place earlier in Britain than the United States, but also was so widespread that a series of whooping cough epidemics soon followed. As with the more recent dispute involving measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism, the United Kingdom played a primary role in defining, promoting, and ultimately exporting this controversy. This essay seeks to explain this phenomenon by situating it in Britain's long history of susp

Using text mining and sentiment analysis to analyse YouTube Italian videos concerning vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Recently, social networks have become a popular source of information on health topics. Particularly, in Italy, there is a lively discussion on the web regarding vaccines also because there is low vaccination coverage, vaccines hesitancy, and anti-vaccine movements. For these reasons, in 2017, Institutions have introduced a law to force children to make ten compulsory vaccines for school attendance and proposed a vaccination campaign. On social networks, this law has fostered a fierce discussion between pro-vaccinations and anti-vaccinations people. This paper aims to understand if
